I grew up in Mobile, in a family that has lived in the south since 1650....moved to Fairhope after I got married. I only heard lingo and accents like this on movies and TV sitcoms. Then I moved to the rural North Georgia mountains. I get it now.

One of my favorite stories of my MIL, who had never left Georgia, was getting sidetracked in NY and were at the border of Canada. They ask this ‘Why are you wanting to cross the border?’ MIL says ‘Honey, we got side tracked at a fork in a road, can we just turn around?’ The Border Guard made fun of her accent with an exaggerated accent, ‘PUH leeze, be muh guest! Hang a left and come back thru, tighter than a hen with her egg!’ MIL didn’t appreciate the parody-FIL was driving while the rest of us MELTED in the backseat. ‘Bless yor heart! Thanks for taking pity on us! We heard Canadian folk were rude and inhospitable, so we’d just as soon leave!’ Father rolled the window up, before a fight broke out! She just kept muttering, ‘Well, I NEVER saw the likes of HIM coming down the pike or around the mountain!’ YEARS later, I was taking our sons across the border, and had stomach flutters on remembering having done this before. Smart alecky college son says from the rumble seat, ‘We’re looking for something to picket!’ Guard laughed and waved us through! I plumb forgot to pack any tin cups to use on the jailhouse bars!
