LOVE shad fishing! Used to go out during lunch in downtown Richmond and wear them out. I must admit I use smaller spoons however. Unfortunately don't live near the tidal rivers anymore. Watched 2 older guys using old doll flies on flyrods and they caught hundreds the last time I got to go! Whatever works, got to go with local knowledge! Good video!

I grew up west of Richmond, west end, always went to GreenTop to get my Shad Darts. Also caught them on the Rappahonick at Fredricksburg. There would be businessmen with ties on out in waders on their lunch hour wearing them out. great memories.

Hickory shad/skipjack are very similar. The closest we have to them is skipjack. You can catch them nearly all the time below chickamauga dam when the water flow is below 45,000. We will have to make a trip down there once the weather straightens out.

We stopped down on the Cape Fear this weekend just to see what was going on with the American Shad run down there and they about broke out into a fist fight right on the boat ramp. Their fun to catch but I’m not fighting over them. lol

Some of the most epic and tiring days of fishing in my life were wading rocky streams in the upper Chesapeake region and catching 200-300 fish per man when the hickory shad run occurs, usually mid April in MD and Delaware. Along with those were a mix of smallmouths, channel cats, carp, white perch and sometimes walleyes would show up in the deeper pools. Stripers, too! Glad you got a taste of the shad gig. We always used light spinning gear and much smaller jigs called shad darts in 1/16 and 1/8 oz. Silver from the sea! Blessings!

We have HUGE numbers of the American Shad variety here in the Northwest that were transplanted back in the 1800's, a guy can fill a boat with a 100, not many know how to cook them here so they are used for sturgeon and crab bait or more often than not released, in a good year the Columbia River will have a run of 5 million. They are so fun.

In the spring, in NJ, on the Delaware River, there is a shad run that I fished hard In the mid-80s. The one fish that I caught after three years of trying was a 5 1/2 lb Roe which is what they call the female shad. I fought that fish for 20 minutes while wading in knee-deep water filled with spawning toads as the sun was setting. It was a surreal experience.

Yep good eating if you know how to cook them which many do not, bony.
