A trick I use when planting a brand new pot is to use a wet coffee filter to lay over the drainage hole. It keeps the soil from flowing out of the pot when watering in the new plants. Water is able to drain but not the soil. Over time the filter will rot and by then the soil is stable.

Love the pot forming trick! Thank you Jenny and viewers for sharing that. It's perfect timing for shade loving plants. I have a basket I need to plant for the shade and needed some ideas. Oh, and I like the little pot feet too. They don't take away from the beauty of the pot or plants! Thanks Jenny ❤️.

I'm so impressed with this new way to add my plant to the larger pot. This method is similar to my method of welling out the middle of the soil in the pot, then pressing the soil towards the side's, before I put the plant in. But sometimes when I added the plant to the well in the middle, the soil falls away from the side's to the bottom, under the plant I'm planting. Having the soil moist really help's the side's not collapse in towards the middle, when you take the empty old pot out. I love this trick of putting in the pot, filling in the side's with moist soil, & firming the soil to the side's of the new pot, between the two pot's. It form's the well first, in the middle, & firm's the side's, before taking the old pot out, to plant the plant. Pre

I use the pot forming trick with in-ground planting also. First i dig or auger an approximate hole, then set the empty pot in, then dig to loosen around the empty pot.(the soil doesnt fall back into the hole then). Then stick the plant in. So slick!

The pot trick works in baking too! Mix your dry ingredients together and then use your appropriate measuring spoon to make a well in the dry to ‘measure’ your sticky ingredients like honey or molasses. Nothing gets wasted, including time, on the measuring spoon 😊

I have a huge planter, about 3 feet deep that I plant in beside my pool each year, and I keep the bottom two feet of old soil each year and just add a foot of new soil to save money, because I figured the things I am planting won’t root deeper than the first foot of soil. I have never had any issues. I didn’t know you weren’t supposed to do that. 😬 I have so many containers and raised beds that I save money on soil wherever I can. It gets really expensive. I may need to see if I can buy it in bulk, like I do my mulch. I could easily use a truck bed or two of soil each year.

Jenny, I would be interested to know if you have any problems with caladiums touching your house and leaving streaks. These streaks will not wash off, but through the winter will eventually disappear. I cannot find what the substance is but it is caladiums since there wasn’t anything else in the pot.
