To answer the issues brought up in the first 2 minutes: yup it's much more key than blade. It is not a practical weapon. Square Enix, the company behind Final Fantasy, and Disney teamed up to make a game. Square likes swords and guns. Disney wanted kid-friendly. The solutions was "what if our main character swings a giant key, not a sword"? Disney said "uhhh, yeah ok I guess". In-universe explanation: It's a magic weapon for magic foes and the shape doesn't really matter.

They could have still made it something fantasy and key-like and not worse than a stick. Look at the Fyreslayers latchkey grand axe is Warhammer Age of Sigmar. It’s a big key, but it’s choppy, and doesn’t have that awkward ring on the base. Yeah it’s very ‘fantasy’ but Age of Sigmar is a more Monster Hunter-ish world, so it fits the setting.

As a longtime KH fan, yes, I (and most fans) agree that the "Keyblade" is pretty bad when one attempts to use it as a conventional sword. One needs to keep in mind, however, that its intended targets are not exactly beings of the natural realm, and thus, conventional wisdom need not apply. Against humans like Squall/Leon, it's more or less a one-handed club (hence why most users attack with the "back" of the weapon) that will definitely bruise and maybe even break bones (which is more than you can say for the far more realistic nunchuks), but due to it being a magical weapon it'll easily cut through the more ethereal forces of the Heartless and Nobodies. Just something to keep in mind, at any rate. Love your content, and am glad that you've been able to endure YT's repeated attempts to shut you down over the years.
@melkel201012 күн бұрын
Yeah it's always confused me when the game uses it as a physical weapon. @Asterion60812 күн бұрын
Yeah no, all your excuses fall apart by the fact that you can't see a single video of the game where they aren't swinging those things around like crazy. You're right about the magical properties damaging magical enemies. When fighting physical opponents, it's generally against people like Cloud, Leon & Yuffie that you don't want to kill. You just have to beat them, like in a boxing match. Having said that, Cloud & Leon fight you with proper swords so it's a bit inconsistent. I think we're just not supposed to think too much about Kingdom Hearts.
@shinigamimiroku372312 күн бұрын
@marvhollingworth663 When it comes to ally enemies like Cloud and Leon, they're professionally-trained swordsmen, so in my mind, they know how to control their strikes to keep from absolutely maiming Sora. One thing I actually like about KH1 over 2 and later entries is that Sora uses the Keyblade more like one would expect from such a blunt weapon. It feels like it actually has weight and bulk to it, and so you end up using it as much defensively as you would offensively, blocking and countering with heavy strikes or unleashing magical strikes with skills like Ragnarok.

Some of the ones you unlock are closer to a blade "Two Becomes One" comes to mind. But all the canon ones are basically just clubs. This is an aspect where the magic explanation is fairly valid though since most Keyblade users are fighting beings made of pure darkness and the keyblade is essentially their kryptonite. I can understand it acting like a blade against a heartless simply because its magic makes it act more like a lightsaber against its intended target. Also worth mentioning that SOME keyblade users occasionally attack with the toothed side. We see Roxas do this on occasion when he's dual-wielding them. I have no explanation at all why they don't use it that way normally (also, if I'm gonna be really nitpicky, some of the skills Sora learns do involve a false edge strike, but yeah, his default combo never does as Tyranth rightfully points out)

The keyblade, in-universe, is as much a weapon as Sam's rope from the LOTR books. Magic from it makes bad guys hurt, so it doesn't need an edge or anything; just has to touch them. Even in-universe keyblades with longer reach tend to perform better than shorter ones, (Pumpkinhead being able to do a string of critical blows whilst having long reach,) with only some exceptions such as the Fairy Harp. The main issue in-universe is their bulk. Everyone who wields one for the first time sinks/sags their arms under the weight, (Except maybe Riku because he's Riku,) and nothing justifies these things being made so thick. No part of their function as weapons or keys ever suggests being heavy/sturdy improves the design.

To be fair, and to acknowledge what Tyranth said in his video, the Keyblade in-universe is a magic-based weapon. So it's not meant to be an axe, it's not even really meant to be a blade (in the same way a Lightsaber isn't really a saber), it cuts through the dark energy of the enemies, so it's physical form isn't meant to be effective. It also has a dual function - as it's not just a "sword", but also, well, a Key. It's actually used as such in the game (in a magical sort of way, to "unlock" the "Hearts" of different worlds that have been corrupted, to restore them). So being designed with the key shape is deliberate for that purpose. That's also why it has the guard it does - to resemble the "loop" handle piece that many older keys used to have. Though, admittedly, that's probably the most egregious part about the Keyblade, since the concerns you pointed out about the "knuckle bones" persist, no matter what the in-universe explanations are.
@CromTuise12 күн бұрын
My theoretical solution is to separate they keyblade into the key and blade; the key’s teeth and second knuckle guard being located on a sturdy scabbard, which can be used as a key, which leaves you a more conventional sword.

yes, the teeth aren't used MOST of the time, but there's an ability called "Zantetsuken" in which Sora enters a reverse grip stance and slashes the enemy with the teeth, maybe there are a few other times when they're used, but it's very much the exception. it's kinda funny how using the teeth is the thing people who never played the games consistently think about, through no fault of their own, of course, but it's still interesting that said, the Kingdom Key (the basis for this one) is the absolute epitome of "fantasy weapon that cuts with magic" (there're even some Keyblades that are flat), however, specially in some later points in the series, there are some versions that are actually edged all around and might as well be just bulky swords

It’s the magic that makes it useful. Without that yeah it be a horrible design. Apparently it's supposed to be effective against certain enemies that maybe regular weapons aren't effective
@RoulicisThe12 күн бұрын
Yeah, it's a "magical" weapon. Which means the actual shape of the thing doesn't matter. There is, in the KH universe, a huge a**hole of a blacksmith that could've shaped his magic weapon any way he wanted and chose the most horribly uncomfortable design his sick mind could conjure xD
@Daltonisntabot12 күн бұрын
@@RoulicisThe No, it's more like the X-Blade was the original counterpart to Kingdom Hearts and every 'Key' after that is a cheap knock-off to imitate its power. Also why the Kingdom Key is the 'true design'. The closest to Kingdom Hearts design and the 'Realm of Lights Keyblade'. Each key after that is just Sora's heart making connections and keychains.

To be fair. In universe, it’s a construct made of magic light of the heart or something like that. I don’t think stuff like weight are really factors. Plus said magic makes it act sharp when needed, especially against dark monsters.

so to point out something, the key teeth are considered the back end of the blade. the blunt section is considered the front and what the MC uses to hit the enemy with lol
@OneGamer2EnvyThemAll12 күн бұрын
Would like to point out that the only instance where Sora uses the teeth of the Keyblade consistently is when he's performing Zantetsuken, an iaijutsu-like blindingly fast slash that's meant to be an insta-kill to lesser enemies and otherwise dealing BIG damage to anything that survives.
@matthewperales991212 күн бұрын
Fun fact, the original idea was to have the Sora use a chainsaw as his weapon. Disney thought this was too violent and came up with the idea of having keyblades instead. So they went from rending enemies apart with a chainsaw to bludgeoning them to death with a metal stick.

I wonder how it would perform if it were fixed in a way, creating a straighter, more sensible axhead in the vague style and the guard were designed to be more functional while keeping the aesthetics.

Well, it is a key first and foremost. Though I do wonder if blades shaped like IRL keys would actually work.
@RoninCatholic12 күн бұрын
With a proper hilt that lets you keep alignment instead of a completely round shaft, axes with key-shaped blades might sometimes be roughly functional.
@LightShigeta5 күн бұрын
A key is meant to insert and then turn. It would work as a stab and torque weapon. Maybe it could be used for tearing a hole in mail if the axe head part had some spikes that jutted in the same direction as a spike on the shaft. Then you can insert both spikes through the mail and twist to break it. Meanwhile the wearer of the mail will probably have killed you.

So, here's a thought: in the games rhe keyblades are magical, they just act like swords. So what if the pole part had edges too on the front and back? That way it'd act closer to the game and it'd make the cutting area longer. You could use it backwards.
@xdragon2k12 күн бұрын
But can we make it better? How about removing the back knuckle bow (or removing both). Essentially, making it a Keyaxe. It will make it easier on the hand/arm AND you can properly test the effectiveness of that blade geometry.
@Phlostonparadise297112 күн бұрын
Make the body/"blade" a 12 gauge shotgun? Probably just enough room to make it a single shot, but that would make it an effective weapon.
@KamenRiderGumo12 күн бұрын
@@Phlostonparadise2971 Problem with that is the barrel would have to be hollow, and melee impacts would definitely dent and warp it so as to make it dangerous to fire. It's my main gripe with combination melee/projectile weapons. To fire a projectile safely and with any accuracy at all you must have a rigid structure that does not change as the tolerances are very tight. But repeatedly whacking your weapon into something will chip, bend, and deform it. Not something you want with a gun barrel.

The keyblade is somewhere between an axe, a bat, a sword (katana specifically), and a wand, depending on who uses it. Some characters even hold it reverse grip. If you remove the offending side of the guard it's usable, though still anime. Maybe the acrobatic cuts sora does by flipping his whole body around while holding the key steady are the most practical.

Some of the ones you unlock are closer to a blade "Two Becomes One" comes to mind (although even though that may be one of the coolest Keyblades its essentially a Mall Ninja Weapon) But all the canon ones are basically just clubs. This is an aspect where the magic explanation is fairly valid in the world context though since most Keyblade users are fighting beings made of pure darkness and the keyblade is essentially their kryptonite. We can understand it acting like a blade against a heartless simply because its magic makes it act more like a lightsaber against its intended target.

Kingdom Hearts is an awesome game. Incredible story. The most ridiculous weapon ever. Thanks!
@paeul49829 күн бұрын
I think one of the theories why they hit with the back of the weapon is because there is an invisible energy edge along the back that can uses the weilders power of light/darkness to cut through basically anything. Since in the ending sequence of KH2 Sora the protagonist cuts through like 3 buildings in a row and then a bunch more with little to no effort.
@nathanweissberg201011 күн бұрын
it's strange even in game, because the idea of the keyblade is that it works as a sword on heartless, nobodies, unversed and dream eaters, and it's the only kind of weapons that can finish these creatures off, but every other weapon in the games (other than the wooden sword and strugle sword) are able to dispell the enemies. There are keyblades that have a more blade-like design, and fun-fact, even though some cutscenes Sora and other keyblade users to cut things with the keyblade, the sound effect of it hitting a target is more of a bludgeoning sound than a cutting

Gotta be honest, this one in particular has been one of the most unnecessary analyses ever. The keyblade is a weapon that uses strength via magic, it is tied to that since it's tied to be a key to the hearts and to liberate those from the darkness... so, without its magic, it is obvious that it is not an ideal weapon in that case...

I remember going a few years playing between games and it took me a while to realize/accept that he does NOT strike with the the end you expect to strike with. When I finally remembered how it's used, I just assumed they designed it that way because it's still a Disney product and hitting with the blunt side is more kid friendly than the actual deadly-looking end. I just just in case they did make actual keyblades and didn't want children harming themselves. Just my theory on it.
@UnswimmingFishYT11 күн бұрын
I've never played it, but having seen pictures and such I've always hated that weapon. They gave it poor balance, too much handle weight, a small space alog which meaningful damage might be done, a bad cutting part that more tears than cuts, a handle that's just plain self-limiting in both swinging comfort and accuracy, and then had it used like a baton more than anything else when it's design most resembles an axe. They also then called this item "blade," trying to depict it as a sword-like object when it has no comparison to one. It's very insulting to the intelligence of everyone looking at it to imply people would accept that as being in any way like a sword.
@CelticShaman.12 күн бұрын
In a previous video I was curious about the hand guard on the keyblade and I think you guys answered that pretty definitively. 😅The keyblade unfortunately relies on its setting more than lightsabers do. In the Kingdom hearts games it cuts because magic. No seriously. Which is why people you tend to use the side without teeth. Now because it's a square enix RPG, there's tons of different keyblades throughout the series and and some look a lot more blade-like than the standard Kingdom key.

Terraria also has this thing in a form of a sword, and whenever I see this thing - it always brings up same question about its knucklebone guard, and like its honestly (and intuitionaly) feels more reliable to just grab the guard itself than trying to hold onto its actual grip, lmao
