If you don't glorify anyone, then there's no such shadow do deal with, but if you are emotionally triggered by certain people, then there's probably a shadow involved.

Not to knock your method because I'm sure it works great for those who actually practice it, but I think the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous are the greatest shadow work system ever developed. It's a shame that people get the wrong idea that the 12 steps are only useful for Alcoholics. Alas, even among alcoholics there are many claims that it doesn't work. Of course, that sentiment usually comes from people who don't even work the steps but instead just attend meetings, as if that were the program. In any case, what you've outlined is very similar to the methodology of Step 10. However, step 10 presupposes that one has completed steps 4 through 7. Indeed, step 10 is a daily recap of steps 4-7. The intent is to deepen and broaden the spiritual experiences that (hopefully) have resulted from a unsparing survey of our own traits. But the rubber really meets the road in step 5, where we confess these undesirable attributes to someone else and the God of our understanding. The ancients (many of whom were concerned with with what I call the alchemy of self-transformation) used this method of confession to galvanize the process of internal change and self-reintegration. As many later psychologists, most notably CG Jung, would later theorize, echoing what had already been well known to the ancient mind, most of the problems of the human condition are realy problems with the scope and quality of consciousness. Men and women have at their disposal a vast array of techniques for manipulating their own level of consciousness. Many find an easy way of doing so in a chemical (a word etymologically related to the word alchemy). Some chemicals increase consciousness while others diminish it. The true addict is the one who cannot concieve of any other effective way of changing his degree of consciousness than by the simple and easy method of consuming a chemical. It works great at first, but after that strategy fails repeatedly--and hopefully before he or she dies in the quest for altered consciousness--the person might eventually find their way to AA or NA, where the program of action outlined in the steps offer a more natural and effective and lasting means of producing the change in consciousness that had been the addicts deepest desire all along. The first 3 steps are really just information steps that are said to get us right with God. The next four steps, said to get us right with ourselves, commence with an assiduous and unsparing self-survey, and a parallel willingness to openly verbalize to another what we find. Why the need write down and to verbalize or to openly confess our faults or sins? Because first written then oral expression is literally a higher level of consciousness than mere personal recognition. It has the practical effect of making conscious that which had been tyranizing us unconsciously. Ontologically, a literal reintegration of the personality ensues as the person begins a wholesale withdrawal of a host of previously ossified projections. Experientially, the person feels the equivalent of taking his or her favorite drink or drug. I could go on for hours talking about this but I have things to do right now. Just keep in mind that the remaining steps--i.e. restitution, reconciliation, carrying this method of change--are designed to produce in concrete fashion progressively higher degrees of consciousness. The goal is to achieve a state in which we can hold this unflattering portrait of ourselves fully in our consciousness and make it available to public scrutiny. The person who achieves that goal--and I've witnessed many--finds him or herself blissfully at ease during life's inevitable vicissitudes. That is, he or she obtains the Philosopher's Stone, that source of inner strength which allows its possessor to be unaffected by the tumults of changes in the external world. In short, he or she learns to transmute the base metals of the lower self into the gold of higher consciousness. "A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways." James 1:8 When asked how to live a virtuous life, Thales had a simple answer: by not doing ourselves that which we blame in others.

Thanks for sharing, Bruce. Do you think there might be value in exploring a way of combining the AA approach with the ASE Shadow Integration method?
@cheery-hex5 жыл бұрын
really? I always considered it rather ineffective, since it slams into you a sense of powerlessness over your own behavior and highlights self-shame, self-labels, and lack of self control

@@cheery-hex Yeah, AA 12 step is outdated and full of christian bullshit. There are clearer, cleaner, more holistic systems now.

Hi Jevon, im thinking about what I need to clear up so I don't attract narcissists or people that are actually quite opposite of me,. in your opinion what are the common qualities in people that attract emotionless, calculated, mean people?
@JevonDangeli6 жыл бұрын
Hi Pearl. Shadows are the unconscious aspects of our personality that we typically see in others when that aspect in us is triggered. We can recognize our shadows by identifying situations where we have judged others, without seeing the quality being judged in ourselves. Therefore, if someone attracts emotionless, calculated, mean people; then they should look for that shadow aspect in themselves and integrate it. That's exactly what the process in this video is about.
@RenaWith6 жыл бұрын
Thanks!! I don't see them (characteristics) in others but atract them. People that are covert narks. I think they are wonderful untill the mask comes off and they turn dangerous which is when I leave. I am what they call an empath. Not sure if you can point me to some of your videos or if you have any articles that you maybe have done on the subject. I red somewhere that shadow work can help empaths and codependent. Thanks again!

Hi Pearl. What he said above is partly true in the sense that there is something we need to find in us that is related to narcissism. I would add to it that there's a sense of self love that needs to be embraced. In my experience with this, there are always signs from the beginning, that we either don't notice or we ignore, in the attempt to be polite or helpful or easy going. This happens from over time disconnecting from our intuition and inner knowing. Lack of self trust. Perhaps, if we let ourselves see right up front that someone is treating us in a way we don't like or want to encourage, we might say something and seem "mean". That might be the fear, anyway. Fear of how we'll be seen by others. Or by ourselves. Whereas NOT speaking up encourages more distrust in our sense of self and inner knowing, is an act of self betrayal, and is a subconscious message to ourselves that we're not worth our own love and decisions. In this sense, shadow work does help. You might notice these people will still be around you, but you won't get sucked into the discourse, and as a result you'll be of no value to them. Hope that helps.

Very interesting video. I am starting on shadow work this year. I despise anger. The ppl that trigger me the most are angry, loud and uncooperative. I disown that part of me. It is in me however...when those ppl are yelling...I want to yell and defend myself...but it makes me so uncomfortable I just like being chill (joker archetype). Learning how to express anger will be a huge undertaking and assuring myself that it is ok to be upset when my boundaries are crossed is completely normal. I can't wait to integrate my shadow. I won't use answer to degrade ppl lol those ppl will forever bother me and I will continually away from them lol 😊
@JevonDangeli4 жыл бұрын
Chris, it is ok to be upset when your boundaries are crossed, but imagine what it will be like to no longer be triggered in those instances, and to be able to respond to those people in a mindful and resourceful manner. That's what this work is about.
