Love your analysis. I'm rather obsessed with Rory's energy, the dicotomy. He's really a quiet person off stage. Thank you!

Yes it was a great time. Rory always played in the city hall in Cork around Christmas. I'm also lucky that when I visit my parents grave. He's right behind them

Saw him several times in the 70s. He played until the venue pulled the plug. One of the greatest players I ever saw live.

God I still love Rory after all these years. Gerry McAvoy, the bassist, was with him so long it was hard to imagine them not on stage together.

I seen Rory Gallagher at a festival in Lisdoonvarna, Ireland in 1983. I was old to be there, but too young to appreciate it at the time. x

A great reaction, Alan. This is performance has many reactions to it and yours is by far the most insightful. Can't add much to what's already been said in the comments about this performance, but keep on this Rory journey, it has many roads and all lead to something exceptional.

This number is the first time I heard Rory. It was a recording on French radio. Throughout the song I was thinking «Who is playing? » WTF is this »? A few weeks later it was on TV and that was it! Sometime later he played the Palais des Sport in Paris and there was now way I was going to miss that. Absolutely mind blowing. The greatest guitarist and showman that I ever saw. I miss him to bits.

Thank you Alan! This is such a fun performance. Funny you should mention the punk rock reference. There is a Rory song that actually does refer to that genre of music called "Brute Force and Ignorance" and I believe it stems from his viewing of a Sex Pistols performance, in which the music skills displayed were terrible, but the primal energy was something he identified with. Its a great song as well, so you should check that one too. And you are right, Rory didn't use a lot of pedals and his main effect was a treble booster to give the sound more punch. I believe he was using a Marshall 50W and his Vox AC-30 amp at this time.

Thanks for another great Rory reaction. This is the closing number of this show, and by this point Rory has worked the crowd, the band, and himself, up to fever pitch! The energy is off the scale, and it's a great, fun performance though maybe not the best vocally (I prefer the Belfast '84 performance in that respect). He still came out and did two encores after this. He said that he wrote this song while at home in Ireland, in bed and feverish with a bad bout of flu, and "It may have affected me a bit, with the lyrics". Interestingly, he said he composed it on an acoustic 12 string, I'd love to have heard that! The 'Jekyll & Hyde' reference may relate to how quiet and introverted he was offstage, while onstage he was anything but. I remember reading an interview where he said something like 'If I behaved offstage the way I behave onstage, nobody would want to talk to me. Sometimes I don't recognise myself up there... and sometimes I don't recognise myself when I come off!'.

@@alan-reacts65 Of course he might just have been watching the old Jekyll & Hyde movie on TV, if I remember right, the 'Hyde' segments had a lot of flickering light and disjointed scenes which could have inspired him. As for my knowledge, such as it is, the RoryOn website has collated hundreds of articles/interviews from over the years, it's fascinating. I spent a lot of time reading my way through them a few years ago, and listening to radio/TV interviews with Rory himself, always a pleasure to listen to.
