The fact that he could play with a unique sound, sorry, so many sounds without pedals etc shows him to be a uniquely talented player.

I subscribed tonight after seeing your reaction to Nightwish and "High Hopes". I saw Rory live four times here in the UK in the 1970s. He was SO good, and would play encore after encore until the venue pulled the plug on him. Looking forward to browsing more of your previous reactions.

Thank you Alan! Rory was unique and never really liked to be stuck in a pigeonhole-and that's why he never released a single. He was very much aware that once an artist had a hit, the public and the music world expected you to keep creating something along the same lines. He wanted to avoid being stuck into a category. Blues were his love and his passion, but his music crossed lines into rock, blues, country blues and other genres. He followed where the music led. For a very different side, try taking a listen to one of his acoustic pieces like "Out on the Western Plain", a Lead Belly tune that Rory made distinctly his own.

Another great Rory reaction, Alan! Bottom line is Rory's rock 'n roll was raw and pure, just like his blues. Would love to see what you think of his version of Bo Carter's "All Around Man" from the Old Grey Whistle Test, it's full of musical surprises and really showcases his interpretation of the blues and highlights the depth of his diverse talent. Thanks and keep on...

Hi Nora , “ all around man “ noted and I’m happy and looking forward to it .. the more I listen and watch Rory , and the rest of the guys who I believe absolutely underpin the freedom of his playing , the more I recognise his influence 😎

Verry interesting sound indeed , and a character . I looked him up as the sound was so familiar . and what i learned its a real real interesting character .Irish playing an old 2nd hand stratocaster he bought in cork. sadly passed away after becoming ill before a concert in rotterdam due to pneumonia . And i can see how he would have inspired a few (dutch) bands as same kind of sound. and with another artist that has a similar way of singing. ( the band Normaal and the other artist Herman Brood mostly know for the hit Saturday night .)

Thanks for another great Rory reaction. He really was a force of nature, Brian May described him as 'elemental'! I get the impression that Rory was pretty hurt and upset by the way things went with Taste, and while can't say for certain, I think when Taste broke up the manager or record company may have retained the rights to the songs (the manager certainly did with the name 'Taste' even though the band, and name predated the manager's involvement). I wouldn't be at all surprised if Rory's reaction was to put the whole thing behind him, including the songs, along the lines of 'fine, keep them, good luck trying to play them. The lyrics to 'Crest of a Wave' seem to bear that out '...But I wonder how will they feel, with a deck of cards you're not around to deal'! I don't think you've reacted to that one yet, maybe a possibility for the future? The live Beat Club video was taken down, but the studio version on the album Deuce is outstanding.

@@alan-reacts65 PS re the swearing - I'm pretty sure Rory didn't use the word 'wanker', he just didn't speak that way. In fact the other band members have commented on the fact that he rarely swore, which they seemed to find amusing, 'you'd get the occasional 'bloody' or 'hell' out of him, but that was about it'! They also said that he'd tell them off for swearing if there were women present. Some music journos tended to 'spice up' his comments in their reports, why, I can't say - maybe they thought it sounded more 'cool' or something. He said himself something along the lines of 'I read some of these articles and I can't believe the things supposedly coming out of my mouth. The gist of the comment is correct though, he wasn't keen on musicians basically reducing music to technical demonstrations.

I think , from what I’ve learned , he was a very quiet man away from the stage , I feel as if he would speak when he had something to say , not just to be heard ! And The press well if they couldn’t get him to fit the rockstar narrative ! Then they just created it themselves .. he’s a joy to behold , I’m sad I never got to see a live performance 👍

Exactly! Have you had a chance to listen to some of his interviews? He got asked some pretty daft questions at times, but his answers were balanced, thoughtful and interesting, especially some of the longer radio interviews that were more of a natural conversation.

The lack of pedals was just his style. He was a master at manipulating his sound control through the controls on the guitar not relying on gadgetry. Who was still doing that after the first pedals came out? No one else that i know of. Once a new pedal came out everyone had to have one every time. Not Rory. He didnt need them. To him mastery of his pickups, knobs and switches were just part of his playing I cant remember exactly but eventuality he did use one pedal but it might have been just for switching not effects. Not sure now. I know he used one of the early treble boosters and played through a 40 watt amp prior to leading into the larger system. He burned up a lot of those 40 watters through the years.
