Shadow Priest: The Hardest Caster Class in TBC Classic

As a former 99-100 parsing shadow priest main for more than 10 years, I agree that we spriests have a hard rotation but seal twisting Ret paladins are by far the HARDEST class.

@@KubanaHAFANANA Seal Twisting alone may not be that hard. But combine it with crusader strike and its cooldown + other abilities that u could use that create a gcd and its an absolute mess. The 400ms window is very frustrating and if you do it wrong, u lose so much dsp that it would have been better that u never did seal twisting but focus on seal of blood and crusader strike alone ^^

Sp main here, it's a fun caster class that actually has a rotation but I wouldn't call it hard. I think hunter has a higher skill ceiling. Priest can up their dps but it's kinda straight forward, manage dots, mind blast and swd on CD, pop trinket and redot etc, but it's mostly a matter of decision making while performing your rotation!

Regarding 10.30, It doesn't quite work like that! You want to pop Spell Damage before Shadow Feind like you say, HOWEVER you want to use Bloodlust AFTER it's been summoned as the Shadow Fiend does not inherit your Haste Ratings, instead if you have it out when bloodlust is popped it will gain the Bloodlust buff as bloodlust is applied to pets as well.

pretty much. its a basic prio list that you change every 2-3 minutes when your trinkets come up. you aren't holding anything for a proc.

Thanks for the vid mate - I swapped servers and mains (used to wl) with tbc and am a more casual player so that given the short time between pre-patch and tbc I felt kind of pressured to boost my 35 spriest with Blizz service to at least get a little experience on 60 before Outland opens up. I'm starting to get a lot better, but I fully agree that it's way more complicated compared to caster classes such as wl. Your vid gave me some good insights to where I can probably get some quick wins DPS wise. I think one aspect that makes this class harder to the common dps classes is that you are most times the only one in the raid or maybe even the guild which makes it a lot harder to get good advice on how to improve. It scales each hit off of how much spelldmg you have, so if you pop a +dmg trinket, summon the pet and then Bloodlust is popped, you'll get a ton of mana.

I've mained shadow priest since the beginning of MoP, til I quit at the end of legion. I mained rogue for classic vanilla, and had a shadow priest as my alt. I had so much fun playing rogue throughout vanilla, but I forever regretted not maining shadow priest. So of course, I am now maining shadow priest in tbc. And honestly, we are a complicated class. We have so much more than just damage. We have to manage mana very very hard, more than most, if not all other classes. We have to make sure our debuffs are always going. We have to make sure vampiric touch is always going. Don't even get me started on pvp. But I love it. I love shadow priest. I will forever main shadow priest. It's what belongs on my heart. I play the class with pride, and I play the class well.

Scenario 1: What do I do if I can get one tick of mind flay off and then my mind blast comes off cd? Do I go for second tick of mind flay and cast MB, go for full duration mind flay and cast MB after, do I interrupt after first tick to cast MB as early as possible? Scenario 2: What do I do if I can get one tick of mind flay off and then my mind Shadow Word: Death off cd? Do I go for second tick of mind flay and cast SWD, go for full duration mind flay and cast SWD after, do I interrupt after first tick to cast SWD as early as possible? Scenario 3: MB just came off CD but SWD is 3 seconds out. Do I go for a full mind flay so that I afterwards can chain MB+SWD in one global? Do I go for MB into 1 tick of Mind Flay into SWD as it comes off CD?

Neither dot deals damage until 3s after application, so the order doesn't matter for mana return. But VT has a cast time, so it's possible to pre-cast to get more uptime in the first target. When solo, VT->SWP also allows you to put VE on the target and not miss any damage tics.

Regarding the usage of trinkets; Trinkets don’t trigger the GCD (global cooldown), so you can use both if you have 2 with a single button with a macro: /use [trinket 1] /use [trinket 2] If you are lazy like me, you can add a spell in the macro, so your trinkets will be used automatically if available when casting a spell: /use [trinket 1] /use [trinket 2] /cast [spell]

Pretty sure it's a retail thing not a tbc thing that sf scales with haste/sp. In tbc i think it deals flat 3k damage.

I think it’s just the mana returned is higher based on sp. dmg is the same. And the sf will be affected by haste if heroism is used while it’s already summoned. Not before.

Pretty sure feral dps has been and will probably always be the most complicated dps spec in wow. Every iteration of it has always been harder than what every other class has to do in every expansion. Even in current versions of wow where they got rid of dot snapshoting, kitties still have it and if you mess it up your dps goes to shit.

High skill cap, is needed with every class if you want to optimize dps, mana/energy/rage etc. I always laugh, when people say "this class is harder, then that class". I have played every single class in Vanilla, lvl'd multiple characters of every class back then (did lvl'ing service for people on my server back then) and the only class I sort off mastered back then was the Rogue because that was my main. How ever, I never completely mastered the Rogue either because I just didn't like the dagger mutilate playstyle, which is a lot harder then the other Rogue builds and can even out dps the other builds if done right. But the skill cap for that, is just too high for most people to reach I guess and so nobody bothers to do it. In my experience, every class has it's own skill caps and some builds require a higher cap then others. Anyone thinking, they can be the best with a one button macro is stupid because of how situational every fight can be and only if you constantly adapt to the situation you can get the maximum out of it. Everyone should just focus on their own class & build and mastering any class requires a lot of skill. So don't even bother thinking, yours is harder then another.

Speaking as a hunter, nahh. I can CRUSH people with a single button. Sure if you want to squeeze every drop out of your character it takes work. But Hunters and Locks are braindead. Locks dont even need a macro, they just actually press one button for most of a fight.

@@redhammer92 A good Hunter will show you, what actual skill can do when you actually know how to play your class and not just spam one button/macro. In case you didn't know already, there's no working one button macro for Hunters and can actually make your DPS worse. Your attack speed, will define your rotation and if your attack speed gets buffed when you crit. You have to switch your rotation again. Of course you can one button, out dps, people who don't know how to play their class or even know what to do. Try doing the same thing in PvP and see how well that will go for you.

Shadow priest isnt the hardest class in TBC, their rotation is easy and the only issue they have is high threat and self harm, everyone dot clips and in a top tier climate Feral Kitty, Enhance Shaman and Ret paladin have the most complex and difficult rotations that have a HUGE dps decrease in the event of a mistake and not just a dps decrease to themselves but a massive debuff to raid wide damage
