a shame they gave up on their custom engine. even looking at DF's coverage of Shadow Warrior 2 right now, it still looks fresh, different and exciting.
@forasago2 жыл бұрын
my theory is, maybe they want to branch out into other genres after this. their engine was built just for a shooter, similar to Valve's engines or id tech. maybe they think getting the whole team into Unreal Engine will make them more flexible as a studio. if they stuck with their in-house engine they would be limited to shooters or face developing tools for months before starting on any non-shooter project. they also picked an inter-generational phase to make this change. I wonder if they already have a publisher deal lined up to develop something big in Unreal Engine 5.
@Valshiirs2 жыл бұрын
Naah man. Engine is just a tool for the developer. Its up to the dev to choose the right tool for the job in order to achieve their vision. Otherwise you have publishers like EA who cause their developers a ton of headaches by forcing them to use Frostbyte, just so they can later use it as marketing ploy.

@cunnyman2 жыл бұрын
@@Valshiirs While that may be true, a customized engine if done right generally means better optimizations, performance, better art direction, lighting, physics and so on. Everything is built with the developer’s vision in mind. For example, say Souls titles from From Software, sure the optimization is ass there but everything else was made with a clear vision in mind. Them switching to Unreal, for example, would mess with their visual presentation, game design, balance, physics and more. 7/10 games that moved to Unreal Engine from their own customized engine usually lose their charm from the generic same-y lighting and a generally more simplified gameplay. Devs can mitigate these of course but it will be starting everything from scratch and the result will be at least slightly different.

It's too bad because there is a semi simple solution for this in a type of profile guided optimization, when you basically run the game a bunch of times and see what shader permutations are used, then that list of shaders are precomputed when you start the game. Having that as a feature in the engine would be great i think since it's such a common issue
@Vash632 жыл бұрын
Steam does exactly this automatically by crowdsourcing Vulkan pipelines from other players and then precompiling the shaders prior to the game run for all DX9-12 and Vulkan games on Linux. That code relies on a Vulkan overlay but it could easily be used by any dev on Windows also, they uploaded it open source on GitHub (Fossilize). It fully resolves the stutter talked about in this video as long as you aren't the first person to get to a point in the game.
@Vash632 жыл бұрын
@Dave Davies What part doesn't? Steam has a vulkan layer that saves pipelines to disk while the games run. This cache is distributed with the game by Steam and any new pipelines are added to your local copy by that Vulkan layer, then uploaded to Valve after the game exits for distribution to other users. In the background prior to game launch Steam runs Fossilize against this cache which runs them all once which builds up your driver specific cache on your local system, preventing stutter. This works for all Vulkan titles in Linux on Steam, which includes all DX9-12 titles as those run through Vulkan due to Proton.

It's remarkable that developers still use fmv with games when they take up a lot of space, tend to look worse and are less flexible than in game engine, in this day and age with how good visuals look in game, there's no reason to use fmv any more. I also wonder why they didn't use many of the enhancements of the PC version on the new gen consoles, a lot of the work is already done on the PC version, surely it can't be that difficult for them to add many of these bells and whistles on the new consoles. In any case, it looks like the game needs a bit of work on all platforms with performance and stutter and for now, it's probably best to avoid this game on any platform until they patch up the game. On that note, I wonder how well it works on the Steam Deck because I think Valve compile the shaders ahead of time.

I can't blame him. Usually this is a thing with DX12/Vulkan games because developers don't generate shader cache during loadings (or first boot of the game), they instead expect our PCs to take the massive CPU Spike hit to generate that shader cache (which gets destroyed with a new driver update or a game update). Aside from Forza, Warzone and maybe a game or 2, no games pre-generate shader cache before, forcing the system to generate them on-fly causing this annoying stuttering. But hey, that is with DX12 and Vulkan games which is mandatory to happen. But Shadow Warrior 3 runs under DX11, so it is even more stupid that this is happening, especially in Unreal Engine games, which is a well aware issue since Unreal Engine 3, a more than a decade have passed, and we still activelly see this issue happening all the time. It's outrageous, honestly! Even some Stadia games pre-calculate the vulkan shaders before the game starting just to not stutter, but on PC nooooooo.... I'm pissed!

Sad this is still such a issue, look at the state Calisto Protocol was in at launch on PC in terms of the stuttering. The last patch def helped a ton, now the game seems to compile shaders (some I guess) at launch since the menu lags for a few seconds since the patch but the stuttering is pretty much gone for me. With only 1.2m subs (post multiple youtube adpocalypse revenue declines), 240k/yr in patreon, low Alexa traffic ranking on their website, and the proliferation of adblockers and several employees and various business overhead and a parent company that almost certainly wants to maximize profits , they probably privately partner with companies to get additional funding sources, which is probably why you see such a skew of Sony and Nvidia oriented videos. They are probably privately receive additional funding sources from Sony and Nvidia which (eg in the case of Nvidia) is why even in lackluster RT implementations they rarely admit that RT impact on some games is sometimes very very difficult to notice an not worth the often large performance hit unless you put two screenshots side by side.

@martinantelo70862 жыл бұрын
I can't really recommend it. It has very good ideas, gory kills are basically like Bayonetta's executions, they give you special weapons and there's a certain layer of strategy deciding which weapons you get and which enemies you insta-kill... But there's no level design and it just ends when you start getting power-ups for your weapons. It's kinda like a single Doom Eternal DLC in length. And also it's very visually unappealing. Only the second area (the dam) looks good. The first and the final area are really bland. It clearly has a very low budget, lower than the previous two games, but given that maybe they should have tried something else, like going full boomer with the graphics.

@crestofhonor23492 жыл бұрын
Unreal 4 only looks the same because developers don’t customize and add in their own effects. There are plenty of more unique looking UE4 games but so many just use the base lighting effects. Street fighter 5 is a good example of some engine customization of UE4

Hi guys from DF, can you made again this Shadow Warrior 3 comparison ?? The New Gen Consoles receave its own version of this game.
@MiltonGeorges2 жыл бұрын
Me thinks this studio didn’t want to pay its engineers to maintain the in-house engine, and instead, scaled back with a smaller team that couldn’t learn Unreal Engine 4 well enough to optimize performance before release. As you said, Alex, the charm of the games is still there, but marred by tech issues. That’s a shame, I love the Shadow Warrior franchise but think I’ll be skipping this one.

So they went with toned down and tame, exactly what I didn't want to hear. I know a lot of people didn't like the rpg elements of SW2 but it really wasn't that bad and gave the game some longevity. Now it sounds incredibly simple and I'm betting people want that deeper progression back...
@chrisrichfield89062 жыл бұрын
I enjoyed the rpg elements, but the procedural level design kind of ruined it for me. Not just because of the seams between biomes ruining immersion, but also the lack of rewards for exploring. Also the story was much better in the first game (imo).

They had 6 years to make the game, I wouldn't blame it on the publisher. They have to cut their losses at some point and ship the game. Seems like the budget wasn't handled well and the huge variety of consoles made things difficult for them.

I've noticed the PS5 is framerate centric focusing on mastering 60fps which is doing a solid job at 4K too. So the real focus would be on details come PS6 unless they decide to make games in 8K/30fps then we'd have to wait again, kind of a vicious technological cycle.
