On this day in 1972 {April 10} Isaac Hayes won an Academy Award for 'Best Original Song' for the "Theme from the movie Shaft"... Six month earlier on October 16th 'the Theme from Shaft' entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; and on November 20th, 1971 it peaked at #1 {for 2 weeks} and spent 13 weeks on the Top 100... Also in 1971 the Bar-Kays released "Son of Shaft"; it entered the Top 100 on December 25th, 1971 and stayed on the chart for 10 weeks, peaking at #53... R.I.P. Mr. Hayes...

Was watching Rockford Files recently and saw the one with Isaac Hayes and Dionne Warwick...great! Then I pulled out my Isaac Hayes Greatest Stax Singles, which I hadn't heard for a loooong time...solid! I dig this soundtrack, but I've always loved the versions of the songs that were in the film much better (like Soulsville, Shaft's Cab Ride, Do Your Thing and some instrumental when Shaft was undercover at the No Name Bar). If these are out there, I'd love to get my hands on them!

God bless Isaac Hayes for leaving us this jam to remember him by. And to think he auditioned for the part of John Shaft, but I would rather think he was humble enough to allow Richard Roundtree be The Man for that role. Hollywood felt sorry for Isaac, tho, so they gave him a Shaft-like role called Truck Turner, which I didn't think was quite him, to be honest, since he seems to at peace with God for such a stereotypically black role, where he shot guns and made out with the ladies. He was a better person through it all, and even took time to laugh at himself by playing the voice of the school chef in South Park. His passing was sad, but the man himself is not forgotten. We the fans are living his legacy, one day at a time. Cuz we love CHEF! Daaaaaamn right!
