No one should be called the GOAT... different era mark different challenges. Pele's time and present are quite different. It is almost impossible to invent an idea out of nothing without any stimulus... almost every invention is due to a stimulus conducive at a particular time and place to evolve...and so is Messi. Had Messi was born in a country where football is not popular, he will not be the player he is today. As a child, he must be exposed to such football for him to pickup and evolved. As an example let me ask one thing.... Aeroplane was invented by Wright brothers but the aeroplane they built by today's standards ...after understanding the aerodynamics..if someone build a supersonic fighter aircraft...is he greater than the Wright brothers? Greatness should be measured in terms of the era how Pele was as compared to other players in his era because every other players were exposed to almost the same situation and environmental stimuli which shape a player.....

Pele is the greatest. The only reason he didn't win 4 World Cups was due to the foul play committed against him in the 66 World Cup. He was the most complete footballer that ever lived. A finisher as good as Romario. I can't think of anyone better than him in the air. All the moves and skills you see from the modern footballers, he was doing in the 50's. Do yourself a favor and find some matches and watch him play, look at how skillful his teammates are and look at the level of competition he had during his time. I do believe he will jump Pele if he wins the World Cup, but if he does, he still won’t be number one in my eyes. But that’s for another day. These are the two main reasons people jump on Pele train: 1: Pele won 3 World Cups. You can’t doubt the mans hardware. He was the youngest player to play in the finals at the age of 17. Amazing feat. If you don’t know who the last one is, do some research. I’ll wait. Concerning those World Cups, how many teams were in the tournament at the time? How many games did a team actually play? Also, does anyone know how many Copa America’s did he win? I’ll wait. 2: Pele scored over 1000 goals!! How many of them were unofficial friendlies and tour games against extremely subpar competition? Yes he scored at the National team level. However, he only played for two clubs throughout his career, Santos and the Cosmos. One would ask why he never left to play overseas. I think the main point where Shaka’s reasoning falls apart is that in Pele’s time the World Cup was the pinnacle of world football. Today, I think the Champion’s League is the pinnacle because the best players are able to play in it regardless of country of origin. So it’s somewhat irrational to try and negate Messi’s accomplishment. It is definitely a valid to factor in international play, but it’s not like Messi isn’t performing. He’s gotten unlucky in multiple finals. I mean even making three back to back finals says something because Argentina rely heavily on his play. Pele was an amazing player of his time don't get me wrong. He might of won 3 world cups but it was in a different era of football. Back then Brazil had a team which out ranked all the other countries in the world and ruled football. Back then not everyone was PROFESSIONAL so it would be a lot easier for people to score goals and there were less games in the world cup so it was easier to get to the final. Also Shaka half of Pele's goals were NOT official. Now getting to Leo Messi he can do it all score headers, firebricks, penalties, left foot , right foot and assist. "Better" is subjective, and if you want to settle it, you should come up with an agreed upon set of criteria by which to compare the two. If it's simply, the variety of what you've won, then sure, Pele won the world cup and Messi hasn't. But theoretically, if Argentina won the world cup, while Messi laid in the middle of the pitch and took a nap every single game, by Hislop's definition, then he's better than Pele based on the sole fact that he won a World Cup. The champions league is much easier, than the world cup. World Cup is one leg, you either sink or swim, you have to score in the final and in the knockout round. Shakas Hislops argument carries weight because Argentina Like Brazil are one of the 5 to 10 Nations that can and are expected to win Major competitions. Messi dose not play for Iceland or Greece, where qualification is treated like a major tournament victory, Argentina go to every major tournament with buoyed by a track record and the subsequent belief that they are one of the nations with a realistic chance of winning. Diego Maradona had to drag Argentina to 2 world cup finals (both against Germany) because the Argentina team and players he played with were not as good as the ones Messi played with (the 1986 world cup winning Argentina team was probably the worst team Argentina has taken to a world cup). And least we forget, Maradona won the Italian League title twice when he was with Napoli. They hand never won it before his arrival and they have not won it since. I think this conversation should still be about whether Maradona is better than Pele because as Shaka quite rightly says, Messi has not done enough where it matters most.
