I'm 47 now, and I remember watching this as a kid in the late 80s. I was an African kid living in a middle-class neighbourhood, with no other black people around, except for my family. I was made fun of by kids around me for being African. Which made me ashamed of being African. This series made me proud of being African.
@StormLaker17 сағат бұрын
In our neighborhood we could have played Zulus vs Britsh army guys- we LOVED this movie as small town white kids....mostly because it showed boobs, but we also liked it because Shaka was bad-a$$ and was stticking it to the colonizers, lol. We would run around the playground singing the theme, terrorizing the girls in our class, turning pieces of cardboard into shields and using sticks as speers, haha.

I remember seeing this when it first aired on TV. To say this Series didn't absolutely gob-smack me would be a *HUGE* understatement! I'll never forget how the intensity of Shaka's gaze, and his deep, gravely voice (In many ways, it reminds me of Morgan Freeman!), kept me mesmerized/fascinated! You just could NOT ignore the man/his Character! I have the complete DVD set, and watch it yearly. Learning more about African history and the Zulu culture is equally fascinating!

Ahead of it's time writing, directing, stellar acting and producing. The true story vs Hollywood movie were very loosely based in accuracy though. I know it was because of the time (70's) and the need to portray UK more in control of their position, being unafraid and "genuine" British civility to the mass consumer audiences & queen mum. Truth be told, every single day the British were absolutely terrified the slightest disrespect or misunderstanding perceived by Shaka or his generals, that Shaka would just have them rounded up like sheep and slaughtered. Yes, the British had the broomsticks (guns) but not nearly enough ammo & personell as Shaka and the Zulu Nation had spears and daggers. They said Shaka had a great sense of humor, but did not suffer fools who tested his patience. He treated the British the exact same way. Why? Because Shaka knew that keeping anyone Non-Zulu not knowing where they stood with him commanded fear, respect and no nonsense when it comes to business.
