I made a fondant cake for my daughters birthday. Its from a box mix and u added extra ingredients to make it dense for fondant. the only thing that happened was it started bulginging on the sides. As far as fondant...i make the mmf and add half a block of wiltons to that. mmf doesnt have the elasticity as good as the regular fondant, but adding mmf helps to taste good...and it was!
@christinajenkins90698 жыл бұрын
i think i added too much icing on the sides. what do u think?
@Shakarbakery8 жыл бұрын
+Christina jenkins there could be many reasons it bulged. too much icing may definitely be the culprit! dry damming your cake tiers before filling. it could have also bulged because you had air in the cake. make sure you're pressing down on each layer of cake. I have a video tutorial on how to level and fill cakes. also, if you do have air in the cake you can insert a straw through the top of the cake and removing it to give an escape hole to the cake! you can cover the top with a topper

Corn starch is an ingredient in powdered sugar (otherwise the fine sugar dust will lump together from natural moisture). So using corn starch or powdered sugar is 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. The powdered sugar will of course add more sweetness.
@littlebeauty200210 жыл бұрын
I like powder sugar then cornstarch is because cornstarch of the fondant would taste sour and bitter

Thank you for sharing, i have a question, how long can i pe do this, i mean would it be fine if i make it 2 days before serving and kept it in fridge?wouldnt the fondant dry?
@Shakarbakery10 жыл бұрын
The fondant won't dry 2 days before, but it also depends on the brand of fondant you use! The fondant will harden in the fridge, but will eventually soften as it comes back to room temperature. depending on your brand of fondant and your refrigerator, your fondant might sweat as it warms up to room temperature. to prevent this, you can place your cake in a box and cover the box with sarran wrap

Hi! Thank you! I didn't reply because for some odd reason youtube doesn't always have a reply button to some of the comments! You can use acetate plastic to get the smooth edge. hi, can i have the ganache recipe that you use when covering a cake with fondant? i find that using buttercream for cakes does not go well here in my country since it's very hot and i don't have a nice ref to chill it... thanks
@Shakarbakery10 жыл бұрын
Hi! I do a 1:1 ratio of chocolate to cream for dark chocolate. so for every pound, use 8 oz. if you're doing white chocolate you will need to do a 3:1 chocolate to cream ratio since white chocolate melts more. Make sure your chocolate is at least 72% cocoa, since the fat content affects the ganache. you then heat your cream to almost boil and pour over your chocolate. let it sit, then stir it in slowly until it is all incorporated. let it sit overnight before use :) hope that helps! if it doesn't you can google many recipes!

You dont need to buy another one if you have another tool or item that works! Honestly after a few years I used my hands for most of my smoothing and only used the smoother as a final touch up. Btw I saw some fondant smothers at the 99 cent store. If you have one where you live go check it out!

hi im making an acoustic guitar cake for my grandpas birthday party and im not sure where to get the fondant and whether or not to put buttercream on the cake as a crumb coat before putting the fondant on what would you recommend?
@Shakarbakery8 жыл бұрын
hi! most craft stores like Michaels or Joanns or even Walmart carry fondant. if you have time you can even order it online through amazon. you can always try to make marshmallow fondant yourself, too! as for crumb coat, you can do buttercream but I'm a supporter of chocolate ganache. make sure you do a thick layer and not just a Crumb coat...doesn't matter which you end up using. I have a video in my youtube on how to make chocolate ganache. good luck!
@carlosrivera45148 жыл бұрын
What is the best thickness for finding when being rolled out ?

@Shakarbakery10 жыл бұрын
Hi! No you don't have to use buttercream. If you don't like the taste of buttercream, maybe it's the recipe you are using? There are so many variations of it! The one I dislike immensely is the recipe that's mostly shortening. I do not use shortening in my buttercreams... it's 100% butter. I actually use chocolate ganache under my fondant instead of buttercream for stability issues :) hope this helps!

Leigh-Ann Franetzki Hi! so sorry for the delay! youtube wasn't allowing me to reply to some of the comments! the buttercream should be COLD before placing the fondant. once it is covered you can place it back in the fridge. depending on your ingredients in the buttercream you may leave it at room temp.I hope your cake turned out ok!!!

How do you keep the fondant from drying out and cracking?
@Shakarbakery10 жыл бұрын
in general, if you're not using the fondant then keep it covered with saran wrap and place in an airtight container. if you mean on the cake itself, then it depends on your fondant! some brands work better than others. I make my own fondant and it's marshmallow based so it doesn't behave the same as store bought fondant. let me know if you have more questions!

@katrinagarcia80228 жыл бұрын
+Shakar Bakery awesome. thanks. but how would I get the fondant to stick if the buttercream is all firm?
@Shakarbakery8 жыл бұрын
+Katrina Garcia it usually has a wet layer develop, and the fondant will be attracted to the natural humidity. I actually use chocolate ganache instead of buttercream and I use a brush to brush on a damp layer of water, or I apply shortening to help the fondant glue. you can use either method for Buttercream too (water will be a better choice). make it DAMP not wet

Does the cake have to be chilled??
@Shakarbakery10 жыл бұрын
it doesn't have to be chilled for this part. I would actually recommend covering the cake not chilled, and then placing in the fridge. the reason for this is that when you chill a cake, it actually shrinks and then starts expanding as it warms up. so if you cover a chilled cake and then it comes to room temp at a party, it can cause potential disasters to your fondant.
