In today’s video I’m watching Mel Brook’s 1974 horror-comedy „Young Frankenstein” starring Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Teri Garr, Cloris Leachamn and many others.
Have fun!

People always miss the Pardon Me Boy joke. The vintage song Chattanooga Choo Choo contains the following lyrics that Mel Brooks spoofs during the Transylvania train stop sequence: Pardon me, boy Is that the Chattanooga choo choo? Track twenty-nine Boy, you can gimme a shine

Igor was played by Marty Feldman, an English writer and comedian who has always been loved in the U.K. His peculiar protruding eyes were the result of a thyroid condition, several accidents and reconstructive surgery.

I was 13 years old and I saw Blazing Saddles. My brother and I laughed and laughed. Less than one year later we went to see Young Frankenstien. I only laughed once or twice at the Gene Hackman blind man part. Years later I watched it again on video and laughed and laughed. Years later my son and I watched it over and over, it became a favorite of both of us together. I now think it is Mel's finest film, and I guess I had to grow into it.

What I’ve learned over time is how much Gene Wilder had to do with the idea and the screenplay. He had to pitch it to Mel! It’s one of Mel’s most “subtle” with the jokes, and I love it!

Great reaction Shandor. Some of this film is also based on "Bride of Frankenstein" 1935 and "Son of Frankenstein" 1939.

Also a very little bit of Ghost Of Frankenstein (1942) & House Of Frankenstein (1944) thrown in there as well...

Gene Wilder's dry comedic delivery is hilarious. Everyone in this movie did a great job with their "over the top" character. Very funny.

The black and white absolutely enhanced the atmosphere. I simply can’t imagine this movie being in color. Would’ve completely changed the character of the film. Enjoyed the commentary! Thanks for sharing, Shandor!

People have forgotten the detail and depth that you can get with black and white. If you look back at the old stuff that was loosely called comic books the black and white ones had a lot more detail especially in the background. I particularly remember the larger ones like Conan and The Rook that were kind of a cross between comic books and graphic novels.

The best parodies are made with love. And this movie respects the classics yet makes it hilarious.

Its not just a parody but an homage to the old films. And yes they used many of the old sets and props

Your reactions to this mirror mine. I have always enjoyed the visuals, the acting, the music, and the serious undercurrent of the story. The humor is the Brooks-Wilder payoff. The intensity delivered by Wilder during the storm experiment and then when he owns up to his true name are two of the high points of his performance. Awesome all around and a great reaction. Too bad you couldn't pack more in.

Unlike other Young Frankenstein reaction videos, you comment heavily on the visual aspects of this film which, as you said, are top-notch. Great work!

1. Mr. Hilltop/Liam Dunn is the same guy that plays the preacher in Blazing Saddles 2. I first saw this at a drive-in (that's still here BTW) and there was a lunar eclipse over the screen that made it even cooler than it already was.😎 3. The studio wanted this in color but Brooks and Wilder insisted black and white because they wanted the old school tone. 4. This movie is Wilder's baby, and he agreed to do Blazing Saddles only if Brooks would direct and help write this movie. 5. It was almost impossible to get through the "You take the blonde and I'll take the one in the turban" scene. Everyone kept cracking up. You can see Wider trying not to laugh. 6. Igor's hump changing sides was Feldman's running gag on the cast and it was kept in the movie. 7. Marty Feldman's walleyed orbs were the result of both a hyperactive thyroid and a botched operation after a car accident before his 30th birthday, in 1963. 8. FUN FACT: Igor's "Walk this way" was Steven Tyler's inspiration for hit song of the same name. 9. Wilder😇 also insisted that Brooks NOT be seen on film. However, the screeching cat and the wolf are Mel. 10. Light reflecting off of the monster's missing teeth is not a goof. It's on purpose. 11. Monical over an eye-patch.🤣 12. "Puttin' on the Ritz" will never be the same again.

Great reaction to this comedy tribute classic Shandor. 😁 You should also check Mel Brooks - High Anxiety (1977), it's a comedic tribute to the films of Alfred Hitchcock (which Hitch saw & loved. He even sent Mel an expensive bottle of wine with a funny note that said "film was very good except you should have used more shower curtain rings for the psycho sequence" 🌉🍾 And also check out Mel Brooks - Dracula: Dead & Loving It (1995) starring Leslie Nielsen as Dracula & Brooks as Van Helsing (and it is a tribute to the many films of Dracula...much like Young Frankenstein was). 🧛‍♂️🦇

To get all the references, you need to have seen Frankenstein (the child at the lake), The Bride of Frankenstein (the blind hermit, the bride with the funky hair), Son of Frankenstein (the Inspector with the artificial arm, the dart game, assistant Ygor) and Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman (the brain transfer).

Brooks has levels: he produced the very good, very serious "Elephant Man", with Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt; and for darker Brooks try the rather polarizing "Twelve Chairs" (I love it, but many don't). Also on the darker side of comedy is his adaptation of Ernst Lubitsch movie "To Be or Not To Be", centering around the Nazi occupation of Poland. Both versions are very, very, very good.

Igor, Marty Feldman, had an over-active thyroid gland, which is why his eyes were so big. He was a great comic talent and is sorely missed after his premature death.

May I suggest "My Favorite Year" inspired by Mel Brook's early career as a writer for the first weekly comedy variety show on television "Sid Ceasar's Your Show of Shows" Mel may have written it I don't remember. It is loosely based on the week that a famous alcoholic actor Eroll Flynn was the guest on that show. It is hilarious and has one of Peter O'toole's finest Oscar nominated performances

Ah. Blasphemy to insult the hotness of the late, great Madeline Kahn (who was Lily in "Blazing Saddles). She was actually offered the role of Inga, but felt that she could invest Elizabeth with some real fun, so chose the smaller part. The script is based on a "Frankenstein" sequel "The Son of Frankenstein", made in 1939 and starring Basil Rathbone in the Wilder role (with Karloff, of course, as the Creature). Inspector Kemp is based on a character in that movie. Here he is played by Kenneth Mars, who specialized in eccentric characters with pronounced accents and brilliant comic timing. He has a great supporting role in the original 1966 "The Producers" (which I prefer, as it has a sharp, spare, forward-driving script, and features very young Wilder and the wonderful Zero Mostel).
