YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN Movie Reaction:
Respected medical lecturer Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) learns that he has inherited his infamous grandfather's estate in Transylvania. Arriving at the castle, Dr. Frankenstein soon begins to recreate his grandfather's experiments with the help of servants Igor (Marty Feldman), Inga (Teri Garr) and the fearsome Frau Blücher (Cloris Leachman). After he creates his own monster (Peter Boyle), new complications ensue with the arrival of the doctor's fiancée, Elizabeth (Madeline Kahn).
Young Frankenstein is a 1974 American comedy horror film directed by Mel Brooks and starring Gene Wilder as the title character, a descendant of the infamous Dr. Victor Frankenstein, and Peter Boyle as the monster. The supporting cast includes Teri Garr, Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars, Richard Haydn, and Gene Hackman. The screenplay was written by Wilder and Brooks.
The film is a parody of the classic horror film genre, in particular the various film adaptations of Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus produced by Universal Pictures in the 1930s. Much of the lab equipment used as props was created by Kenneth Strickfaden for the 1931 film Frankenstein. To help evoke the atmosphere of the earlier films, Brooks shot the picture entirely in black and white, a rarity in the 1970s, and employed 1930s' style opening credits and scene transitions such as iris outs, wipes, and fades to black. The film also features a period score by Brooks' longtime composer John Morris.
A critical favorite and box-office smash, Young Frankenstein ranks No. 28 on Total Film magazine's readers' "List of the 50 Greatest Comedy Films of All Time", No. 56 on Bravo's list of the "100 Funniest Movies", and No. 13 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 funniest American movies. In 2003, it was deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" by the United States National Film Preservation Board, and selected for preservation in the Library of Congress National Film Registry. It was later adapted by Brooks and Thomas Meehan as a stage musical.
On its 40th anniversary, Brooks considered it by far his finest (although not his funniest) film as a writer-director.

Gene Wilder said the only fight he ever had with Mel Brooks was over the "Putting On The Ritz" scene. Mel wanted to cut it for being "too silly" but Gene insisted it would work. Gene fought for it so hard that Mel finally said "If you want it that bad then I'll trust you." and it turned out to be one of the classic cinema moments of all time. Well done, Gene!

From what I understand Mel wasn't against it totally but brought it up with Gene just to see if he would fight for it, since he proved he believed it it stayed in. It was only a fight on the part of Gene, and Mel knew exactly what he was doing.

Him and gene fought until it "almost turned into a fist fight", which Mel stated himself, but then gene said "okay, let's record it and see how it goes. If you don't like it, we won't put it into the movie." They did and Mel brooks said "I've never been so wrong in my life."

21:26 the whole scene at this dinner table was improvised. They had to reshoot Gene Wilder touching the food because the crew kept cracking up. If he really said this, then either he was pulling her leg (as was his habit) or he was misinformed. The closest word for glue in German dialect is "Kleber". Frau means Mrs. and Blücher is a very common name, essentially equivalent to Jones. According to supplementary information on the DVD the horse's terror at her name is meant to show that she is a terrible and frightening person and, according to Gene Wilder, "Lord only knows what she does to them when no one is around." On the other hand, they react to the name, not her presence, weakening this idea. One idea has been proposed that the name reminds them of an incident in the career of Prussian Field Marshal Gebhardt von Blücher, where his horse died under him in the war of 1815, or maybe it's just a silly gag with no meaning at all.

One thing that I missed the first few times I watched this movie: Remember the policeman with the wooden arm? Look closely at his face whenever he's in closeup. He's wearing a monocle. But where is he wearing it? Over his eye patch. A corrective lens isn't going to do much when there's no eye to correct... Also, you may want to check out Spaceballs. It's another Mel Brooks movie and an absolute classic. Rick Morranis plays the lead villain and the whole movie is a send up to famous sci-fi movies (mostly Star Wars)

Love it. I remember watching this movie as a kid, and even missing a bunch of the jokes (being a kid) I loved it, and have ever since. As a suggestion for something else to watch, here's one that probably hasn't been suggested yet- "Arsenic and Old Lace". It's an old one- from the 1940s- with Cary Grant and Peter Lorre, and is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Might be a fun change of pace.

A couple of fun notes about this movie. First, it is not really a full Mel Brooks movie...Gene Wilder actually wrote it, mostly. Mel needed Gene to play the Waco Kid in Blazing Saddles, so Gene said he would do that for Mel if Mel would direct Young Frankenstein for Gene Wilder. Also, the equipment in Gene Wilder's Frankenstein lab is actually the same props that were used on the classic 1931 Boris Karloff Frankenstein movie. ✌

Came here to mention that about the lab and the props. Really adds to the authenticity and underlines how the movie isn’t making fun of the original, it really is celebrating it, which is what the best parodies and satires do (like modern satires like Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, for instance).

You asked if the police inspector was a cyborg. No. The actor portraying him was Kenneth Mars. In noticed that the character in the original film "Frankenstein" was a stiff military man. The term used for this type of person is 'marionette'. So he played the character as if were a puppet with wooden limbs with gears at the joints. Very glad you enjoyed this film.

The character DID have a wooden arm. Weren't you paying attention at the end? "...to the lumber mill!" He had lost his arm to the previous monster, that is what made him an expert.

I enjoyed your reaction and am glad you appreciated the film's humor even though you probably haven't seen the movies that it is spoofing. Wilder based his original story and the look of the film on the old Universal Studios "Frankenstein" series of the 30s and 40s, especially the first three--"Frankenstein", "Bride of Frankenstein", and "Son of Frankenstein", with several of the comedy scenes directly based on serious ones (Igor stealing the wrong brain, the creation scene, the Monster befriending a blind hermit, the constable with the wooden arm, etc.). Having a love for these original classics makes this affectionate spoof even more satisfying. A bit of trivia: the actor whose accent you liked at 28:46 is Norbert Schiller, who was in the 1958 film "Frankenstein 1970" with Boris Karloff in which his brain ends up in the skull of the Monster.

I think I read somewhere that Gene Wilder actually wrote the first draft of the script, then gave it to Mel Brooks to edit and write the final draft so as to give it an actual chance to be made in to a film. Hence why this film has some of Gene's best acting

The thing about Mel Brooks movies is you have to watch them a few times, there are always little things in them people miss the first time. ie When Gene wilder was going up stairs the first time the candles weren't even light You should check out some of Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor movies too

My favorite of all the Mel Brooks films. Saw it my freshman year of college (spring 1975) and laughed so hard throughout. It's also fun to see his stable of actors he often cast in his films. Gene WIlder, Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Harvey Korman. His character actors were often reused in the films. The guy he was experimenting on at the beginning (the one he kneed in the groin) was the one who played the minister in Blazing Saddles. The late great Marty Feldman was so perfect in this role. He was a funny man.

The horses in 'Young Frankenstein' react violently to mention of Frau Blücher's name because it means 'glue' in German. Horses that are put down are often said to have been "sent to the glue factory".

Exept it doesn´t. In German "Klebstoff" or "Kleber" means Glue. Blücher might be the Brand Name of a Company that produced Glue.

I grew up on Mel Brooks and Monty Python and Young Frankenstein is my absolute favorite comedy, not to mention one of my top 20 favorite films overall. Mel does sort of have a cameo in this one, he provided the voice work for the wolf howling ("there wolf! there castle!") and the cat that got nailed by the stray dart.

This is my favorite movie. In my opinion, Peter Boyle owned this role. Not being able to talk but showing emotions with just his movements and facial expressions. They all killed it but Peter Boyle was my favorite. Every so often me and my sister sing "Put it on the Ritz" in our Monster voice.

I first saw (or rather heard) this movie before I was born! My mom had a long labor (eventually a C-section was needed) but when she was in the hospital trying to evict me from her womb, one of the movies that was playing on the hospital room TV was Young Frankenstien. She loved it, it cheered her up, but laughing hurt for her at the time so she'd try to hold all the laughs in =) It's been a family favorite ever since I can remember. Tremors and Tremors 2 (Which is the better one) are also family favorites, you should totally do those!!! Also, I'm glad I found your channel. Been loving it. You have the exact same sense of humor as I do!
