Well the comedic climate was way crazier back then. South Park, Jeff Dunham, iDubbz, etc. It doesn’t make it right, but it was a big reason a lot of content creators felt it was an ok thing to put out into the world. I don’t think Shane’s controversial jokes came from a place of hate, but ignorance. And he’s shown more and more remorse for it as the years go by because he’s been growing as a person. He’s said he believes his cancellation is fair, and has expressed how deeply regretful he is that he not only did what he did-as an individual-but has also influenced his audience to probably do the same. He seems genuinely apologetic, and has stated that if some people don’t want to forgive him he understands

Honestly I don’t think he was ever racist. The culture of comedy at the time was to stretch the boundaries. The absurdity of the obvious exaggeration is what made it funny. I think people that are trying to be hurtful are doing things in a mean spirited and harmful or violent. I don’t think he ever did that. Is it distasteful and unacceptable in the current cultural climate. But honestly look into all 80s through early 2000s comedy. Everyone would be cancelled. I think he learned why it’s hurtful. And so was truly sorry about it. I think people like to see successful people fall because of their own pain.

Definitely an L take. Being someone who is actually old enough to remember the creation of KZbin, I can say there were plenty of us who did not think it was funny back then.
