I think my comment may have been automatically deleted because it was assumed I was promoting ideas I was actually against. Basically, Shane has a history of getting his conspiracy theories from dangerous sources that promote dangerous ideas except he’d use more dog whistles within his own content. Dangerous for anyone who looked further into the topics he promoted. There’s a particular example that comes to mind but I don’t think I’ll be allowed to describe it in the KZbin comment section. He also made multiple “conspiracy theory” videos apparently trying to out Dan and Phil, which he’d conclude by accusing them of qu*erbaiting (they’ve both since come out). So there’s that..

The conspiracy theories were what really put me off Shane, the way he constantly took things at face value and treated the wildest things as truth while having such a loyal impressionable audience was so concerning, especially when he was talking about real life deaths. But at the same time, when did he ever present any “Theory” (important word btw) as a fact? Theory’s aren’t facts. You don’t need to believe it, if you aren’t stupid. Stupid people deserve to think stupid things are real. It’s part of natural selection.

Some of the old folks, like me, may remember that the X-Files had a spin-off comedy series (I am completely serious, this was a real thing) following the adventures of Langly, Frohike, and Byers from the original series. In March 2001 they aired an episode that depicted very similar happenings to "the Event" and I am always pissed when no one references it in their "predictive programming" compilations (because it was a great series that deserved more attention, not because I believe in pp).

Not even going into how legitimately dangerous people putting real faith in conspiracy theories has become recently (as you rightly pointed out) --many of these conspiracy are just _boring._ The Nazis stealing the Ark of the Covenant or the Holy Grail, the Spear of Destiny being used to bring about the Apocalypse, the Necronomicon summoning Cthulhu, those are at least *fun* ideas that make for enjoyable stories. But these ones about kids cartoons and recycled pizza and Bigfoot? They're lame, pointless, and uninteresting. "Ooooo, some hairy guy in the woods, ooooo maybe they had a _naughty joke_ in one frame of a cartoon, oooooo pizza slices look funny!" And as for the 9/11 "truther" theories and reptilians ruling the world, well it's basically a precursor to all the violent QAnoners we're now dealing with and a lot of times is just a mask for other racial/ethnic/national/religious hatred.

@honeybie1703 жыл бұрын
Oh my God, this reminds me of "psychics" that act like they're spirit mediums who can talk to your late loved ones by saying the most generic, vague things that could apply to anyone or anything. If your evidence is vague enough, of course you're going to see a connection. That doesn't mean a vague connection between two things makes them related. Buildings collapsing and exploding is just a generic trope used in action movies/shows to display the high stakes and danger of the plot. Also, isn't another part of this "predictive conditioning" or whatever saying they're putting these things in media to make us become okay with them? Because I think a vast majority of people can differentiate between fiction and reality. Just because we see a building exploding on a fictional tv show or in a movie doesn't mean we'd be fine with it happening in real life. I think most people would still be terrified of anything, especially a building, suddenly exploding or collapsing. There's no sound psychological basis for this "predictive conditioning." You put it perfectly, it's just some fear-mongering bullshit.

Also I remember years ago watching Shane talk about the headless woman trope in one of his videos. Which how so many ads and movie posters have the body of a woman, generally a sexy one and they don't show her head/face and sometimes the lady is not even relevant. Honestly, I'm wondering what shane thinks about the Nostradamus """prediction""" (Nostradamus' predictions are vague as hell and not really accurate) that's associated with 9/11, cause if he believes the whole predictive programming stuff its gonna be hard to explain why the US government put that into pop culture in the 1500's. Especially since the US didn't even exist back then.

Thanks for covering this. In my opinion the fact that he platformed, and didn't ENTIRELY delegitimize so many spooooky conspiracy theories, is no less harmful than his casual racism, sexism, sexualization of minors... all that disgusting shit that KZbin let him get away with in the early days before his softboy rebranding. For the reasons you stated in this one. The fact that the "reformed" Shane Dawson was giving visibility to blatant misinformation, even if he wasn't wholeheartedly agreeing with it, shouldn't be understated in his other reasons why he doesn't deserve to have a platform. More discussions on his awful conspiracy videos would be appreciated, because I feel like it doesn't get the volume of criticism it really deserves. The only reason to bring up these ideas at all is to debunk them, not to tell them as if they're a scary bedtime story and talk about how they gave you chills.

Me and a friend were so excited about new "episodes" and thought we were actually expanding our horizon and thinking "beyond" what popular media tells us. I'm so fucking glad I didn't fall down some weird rabbit hole that would've led me to belive Qanon shit or similar stuff. Especially the 9/11 theories he showed are so. fucking. dangerous. His audience is around 12-18 years old, most of them not knowing shit about history, science or the dangers of conspiratorial thinking. Hearing about "ground breaking" ideas and theories like that could very easily lead you down a dark path after doing some more "research".
