In short, rather than delete 'co-governance' from the statute books, the new 'fast-track' consenting scheme proposes giving local iwi the same rights of representation on the most powerful committee as local councils. It shuts the public out, while giving new legal rights to iwi (and only iwi) to have their say.

the real problem with the waitangi tribunal now laid bare, it was free for moari iwi to engage in, so they could just stonewall with full control, until governments gave them a ridiculous and untenable settlement. now we have to honour those settlements, unfair and made under duress. The Treaty of Waitangi's horrible legacy in our law continues, no wonder it has spent more time as a historical document with no legal bearing than as part of our law in this country. Dumped from the law after less than 30 years after it was signed.

Consultation is not the same as veto. Sean did follow through with this question. Provided there in no recourse to a judicial review then should be no problem with consultation. ie We hear what you say but after consulting with other interested groups and people this is what we are going to do. It appears that Sean just thinks one piece of legislation can overide other contract/settmenets. I'm no lawyer but I'd think Shane is wise to tread carefully here, or at least the Crown lawyers.

It is not because of Māori, it is because the Pākeha settlers that came here, agreed to the terms of the treaty that allowed them to live here, then found it hard to honour those terms after they became the majority in this country.
