First song I thought of after I heard MacGowan died. Underneath that drunken slurring was some seriously beautiful poetry. RIP Shane!

Love this one... Shane tried several times during his time in the Pogues to get this one on an album, but it never fully materialised (Rough takes exist). It wasn't until he experienced the artistic freedom he achieved by leaving the Pogues and starting his own band "The Popes" that he got around to working with the song and melody again and shaped it into this great song of sorrow and longing for his homeland, the green shores of Éire. "Mother Mo Chroí" started life as "NW3" (which is the postcode for the area of London where Shane spent his youth.) It's worth checking out the version called "NW3", the melody is the same but the lyrics are completely different. Hope this offers some insight to new Shane fans. All the best, Davey...

TheDude I agree 100% my friend. Have you heard the 5-CD boxset called "Just Look Them Straight In The Eye And Say Pogue Mahone!"? There's an excellent version of NW3 on it.. I'm a huge Pogues fan, Shane is my favourite lyricist of all time, and I must say that the boxset was well worth every penny I spent on it. All five CDs are packed to the gills with amazing demos, live versions and alternate studio takes, spanning the Pogues entire career. Well worth tracking down! All the best, lots of respect from Davey in Longford Town, Éire.

I wish we had a solid cut of The Pogues' NW3. I prefer the bridge in that version, but I think this tune is better in every other regard.
