As a big fan of Shanes its sad to see him in a wheelchair like that, the guy is only 60, but he just doesn't want to give up the drink. Our president Michael D Higgins gave him an award at his birthday celebrations in Dublin in December; he's 77 and Shane is only 60. He's one of my biggest heroes and things were looking up for him a while ago when he got his teeth done. I wish he'd just look after himself a bit better, Ozzy is doing it, the Rolling Stones are doing it.
@commonsense54016 жыл бұрын
IrishBard he has been at it since the mid80s, never stops. Love him to death, haven’t seen him since 89. Weird to say but he turned me off excess. I watched him go from being a fit young bloke to a total wreck within 7 or 8 years while other mates died in the circle. A fuckin waste.
@irishelk36 жыл бұрын
Yeah exactly, you go that far then that's where it gets you, at least pace yourself and you can always enjoy it then. If you see him in the 80s he's full of energy and creativity, composing some of the greatest songs ever written and he's singing great and the band are really happening and the sound that they made and it blows me away that they weren't that popular and still aren't widely appreciated today. His songs are the soundtrack to my life: Lullaby of London, Dark Streets of London, their cover of the Limerick Rake, Rocky road to Dublin, If i should fall from grace with god, A pistol for Paddy Garcia, Rainy night in Soho, Summer in Siam. He's a giant, and yet so down to earth, so kind and genuine. He'll always be one of my biggest hero's

I thought Ewan McColl was Irish - however... "James Henry Miller (25 January 1915 - 22 October 1989), better known by his stage name Ewan MacColl, was a British folk singer, songwriter, communist, labour activist, actor, poet, playwright and record producer born in Lancashire to Scottish parents.

It's the folky style and ofc the pogues covering it helped, it was also indeed written about Salford but by euan mcall who I believe is of irish immigrant descent
@seamussc5 жыл бұрын
The Dubliners recorded a version that made the song famous many years before the Pogues did, and many Irish acts covered the song because of that cover. I like the Pogues version more, but I believe the general association with the Irish despite it being a Scottish song about an English town comes from the Dubliners' influence, ultimately.
