The commentators are obsessed with Earl's antics, complaining that it's basically uncalled for, that it doesn't help him, etc. Reality check: Earl is one of the greatest pool players ever and he's always been like that. It's part of his personality. He can't switch it off. If he tried to suppress his emotions, he would probably lose. He needs to let off steam.

He is also one of the best to *ever* play the game, and only a fool would see his accomplishments and say otherwise. There have been plenty of bombastic blowhards in all realms of competitive sports. Doesn't mean they're not good; just means if they're on fire and you have a glass of water you're more apt to drink the water and watch the show.

Earl considers the handshake at the end of a match, a sign of respect for how he thinks his opponent played, and if he thinks his opponent was lucky or not. It might be better if he just respected the professional opposite him regardless of how the match went, but that's not how Earl rolls.
