A: NUMBER 1.....GET DIRTY and start wrenching.

Tip: You will never learn it all from one source or in a short time period. No matter what craft you are trying to master, YOU must be dedicated and put the time in. THERE IS NO BETTER WAY TO LEARN THAN DOING! I will say it again, you must actually do the work to master it. You cannot just watch or read about it and master anything.
You want to be a master bike builder, mechanic, welder, nurse, carpenter or you fill in the blank?
-Don't take for granted opportunities to learn deeper
-Be humble and seek advice
-Be intentional with your learning plan
-Don't blame a school, job or your parents for not giving you ever answer, go get it!

hello Shane, thank you for your work, you have excelent videos! you have a natural talent for explaning, wish that all teachers wore like you! i know you have a lot of work but if you read this comment, can you answer me a question? i have a 1999 honda vfr800, the problem is that i'ved found a gear dog in the oil pan! the motorcicle runs normal( i do commuting on this motorcycle no hards accelerations etc) is there a problem if i drive it like this? what can cause a gear dog to break? thank you

When you're at rest and going from neutral to first, and both shafts are stationary, if the dogs are not aligned with the slots, how do you shift?

If both shafts are stationary, yes you cannot finish shifting. That often happens when you try to shift a turned-off bike. Also, it is the cause of false neutral when you try downshifting from very high gears AFTER stopping. In that case you can try moving the rear wheel to make the shaft rotate slightly, and make those slots get aligned. In normal circumstances, all components are slightly rotating in different speed, even in neutral gear, thanks to(?) fluid drag and rolling friction. So the misalignment will be resolved in less than a second, you just feel a slight resistance during shifting.

Hello, when shifting gears is it normal for the output shaft to need some rotation before the sprockets fully slide in? Because just rotating by hand the input shaft by hand won't allow the full sliding of some sprockets. I'm almost done with my rebuild and wanna make sure I've installed the gearbox properly. Thanks!

I have a question that you might be able to answer. In first gear on every single motorcycle I've owned, it seems to have a sort of whine that increases in pitch proportionally with RPMs. This doesn't happen in any other gear. Why is that? I was just curious because I also heard an RPM dependent "whine" in first gear in this video.

I won't pretend to know exactly but I will take a shot and maybe someone else out there knows for sure. I would say that the high torque load of first gear alonfg with lower speeds would create all contact loads to be "louder" along with you can simply hear more as your wind and ambient noises as taking over as you speed up in higher gears. on my sv650 even shifting down to first from second gear sometimes I get stuck in like a false neutral, the shifter feels like it's in neutral but there's no light indicating neutral (lights good) I have to back the wheel up half a foot or so then it clicks into first gear why might that be?
