Important for people to know that people can make 250k with a Masters and sometimes less depending on field, location, and experience. If you want to go into any of these fields please do it for the love of it.

Shane, definitely look into Economics PhD’s. The vast majority of Econ PhD’s graduate with little to no debt. The job market in academia is tight for many fields, and econ is no exception. But, there is a lot of other opportunity in finance, tech, business, and government that is pretty robust and PhD level economists often command salaries of 100k+ with great placements. Econ PhD’s are in low supply relative to the other social sciences PhD's because the barriers to entry in Econ are pretty high. Good GRE quant score and lots of undergrad math is needed as a bare minimum to get admitted.

like many degrees - you will see listing for BA MA and PhD econs for the same job position - a PhD is not super value-added - unless you want to be a prof - don't chase a PhD

This video completely misses the point of doctoral degrees.
@arcadiosincero Жыл бұрын
I recently learned that a local university offers a Doctor of Science in Computer Science. It’s 30 credits of grad level courses plus a dissertation. I’ll be going there soon for my masters. Going onto the doctorate doesn’t *seem* like much more work (just more of the same as the masters), except for that dissertation. So, I might just continue on depending on how burnt out I feel after doing the masters. Work is paying for it, so I might as well.
@ryox82 Жыл бұрын
Work paying for it is good. Question yourself on your end goal. If I was going this high academically it would be to gain knowledge to be an innovator/inventor. Not doing some sort of standard job.
@pnutbutta1234567 Жыл бұрын
That's an applied doctorate so its a little different from the research variety. You don't have to come up with original research; you can use an existing case study and you are correct, its not much more work. However, if you do decide to do it, get your dissertation idea and outline together before you start -MUCH easier process that way.
@timothyrday1390 Жыл бұрын
The dissertation can really bog you down depending on the research and committee expectations. Either way, I wouldn't go into any doctoral program thinking it's "just a little more work" than a master's.

Thank god the VA paid all my expenses, I didn’t even have to use my GI BILL. I DO regret going into a horribly impractical engineering major, with even worse employment prospects (chemical engineering). Thankfully I still had my GI bill and used it to go back to school for nursing. Don’t do what I did, def do your research and for those wanting to go on to a masters or PhD in engineering, beware, it’s hard, like REALLY hard, you had better have mastered your undergrad curriculum, because the same mistakes you made as an undergrad won’t be looked at in an understanding light.
@kingmelanin7468 Жыл бұрын
Physics is the same way as chemical engineering. No standardized job title therefore no great employment statistics for research prior engagement. Salaries are disproportionately for academia and those with 20+ years experience. Why do that when an electrical engineer can obtain employment with an AS degree. Nursing is modular. One can gain employment at every level.

😔 my younger brother makes more than that with a bachelor's. Thank you for your honesty when you said it's not a good option for 95% of people. Waste of time and money.

You need to do more thorough research. The MD and DO degrees aren't "merging within the next 5 years," and I'm not sure where you got that idea from. And most residency programs are 3-4 years; the only residency program that is 7 years is neurosurgery.

@ShinySephiroth1 Жыл бұрын
Do you have outcomes of those with multiple doctorates i.e. those who do the combined MD/PhD or DO/PhD programs? Those are only 7-8 years for both degrees combined and are free PLUS a $30k+ yearly stipend while in med school. I'd like to see their average outcomes vs MD/DO-only... but it seems messy with the varying specialties, how much research vs. clinical work they do, and if they go straight to industry vs academia vs clinic work.

Just curious coming from Australia - how much do these Ph.D programs cost in USA ? A 3 year (yes only 3 years) undergraduate degree will cost about $30K USD & you can also getting a living allowance too. Ph.D programs are free here in Australia.
@papichulo8149 Жыл бұрын
I can only speak on STEM PhDs but you are given a stipend for living expenses. The stipend is supported by either the university or the principal investigator (PI) of the lab you'll be doing a PhD in. More programs are starting to support first year PhDs with university money and then putting that responsibility on your advisor thereafter. Course fees are waived since you'll likely be doing a teaching or research assistantship (if fees aren't waived definitely run), occasionally you may encounter a program where this isn't required at all though unless you want an increase to your stipend.
@matthewbrown6163 Жыл бұрын
@@papichulo8149 Yes get a Stipend here too - about $400 USD a week (I never accepted it) but my host university is in the USA but my course work is based here. I am looking for yet a 3rd supervisor - as 1 died, 1 resigned & the 3rd is on another planet I think. After Accounting, I studied Risk Management - thus a Ph.D in Risk & Acturial Science. I don't want to teach - just happy to do my Research & Deliver Key Note Speaking talks.

It blows my mind that you put pharmacist over dentist. You have no idea how nice of a paycheck you’ll have as a dentist if you work corporate. And if you work corporate there is no additional debt or “renting equipment” (I’ve never known a single dentist who rents their equipment).
