As someone who graduated from electrical engineering, the advice that I would give to individuals considering which engineering discipline is best for them: play to your strengths. While the metrics for each degree are important, if you choose a discipline that isn't your strong suit, it will make things more challenging for you in your career. So if you are really passionate about one particular area and you excel in the tangible factors for that area, I would just follow your instincts. In the end, regardless of which engineering discipline you choose, there is no better bang for your buck when it comes to return on investment for a four year degree.

Chemical engineering is NOT largely about chemistry. I can say that in my experience, it's an overdose of math[s], physics, chemistry, bio-engineering, general engineering, materials science, and many more. A lot of subjects overlap with other engineering degrees and some even go further than what other degrees require.

Everyday I always asked myself what happens to me after graduating in college (hopefully will graduate after 3 years, I am a second year student not officially since I'm not enrolled yet but I finish first year). I really don't know what are the jobs of computer engineers, if they are really part of a company or what. That thing bothers me, that's why this really help me think that maybe we are part of something. PS. Sorry for the grammatical error, English is not my first language. PPS. Love the way you explain things, keep it up! ( I choose CpE since I like programming even though it hates me and also because I can take hardware and software and the same time. Computer Engineer here just graduated and I chose this major for the exact same reason I want to design and build a circuit but also program it. Jobs for computer engineers are very versatile and it depends what you're trying to focus on. Two main areas of focus are software engineering and hardware engineering. If you focus more on software you can get almost any job that computer science degree can, all software engineering jobs that I saw will accept both degrees. If you focus on hardware then there are few more routes you need to choose. You can get into embedded systems / PCB design /digital signal processing. Or you can get into digital design like FPGA's / HDL/ VLSI. If you choose to focus on hardware you can get a lot of jobs in electronic engineering and jobs in IC design or custom hardware development. Another great benefit of this degree is, it gives you a new hobby. for me I'm building circuits and making my own projects for fun. Goodluck, you chose well.

Completely agree considering aerospace engineering is a branch of mechanical engineering
@romanogorodnov63693 жыл бұрын
I completely agree that Aerospace is a fantastic degree, and I would definitely say that it has an edge over Mechanical, contrary to popular belief- here's why. Firstly, you can definitely work as a Mechanical engineer with an Aerospace bachelor/masters as it is literally "rocket science", where the highest level of maths and quantitative skills are necessary, which goes against what some people claim, albeit true at times. Moreover, you study so much stuff in detail, all the way from Materials structures to aerodynamics and so many modules that encompass most of what is studied in MechEng, so it is totally not a specialist route, but still has tons of content to cover. Although not many statistics show this, out of the anecdotal experience and asking professionals this question of "Aerospace vs Mechanical", the latter is definitely losing its sleight as employers are not looking for "broad strokes" people, and finally, if you're wishing to pursue the finance route or other routes that just utilise quantitative skills gained, Aerospace will make you more employable as more of the course is high-level maths based.

No one ever heard of motorsport engineering? Electrical, mechanical, aerodynamic, design, data and chemical engineering are all covered. One thing about petroleum engineering is that the market is volatile and as such so is job security. While the salary isn't dependent on oil prices the amount of jobs is. If prices rise you could lose your job as demand decreases, if prices drop then companies can't afford to pay you, and if oil gets harder to access you can lose your job. You will likely get another job soon but that extra salary essentially pays for your unemployment. You have to do well to get normal job security in that industry.

As a Chemical Engineer that has been working in industry for about 5 years, I completley disagree with its position. It should definitely be lower than industrial and mechanical engineering... My argument is that it is always better at a BSc level to choose something more general and flexible rather than more specialized. And ChEs will hate me for this, but the reality is our discipline is a MechE specialized in Chem industry (Applied Thermo, Fluids, Heat & Mass transfer, Mechanics, and a bit of chemistry & bio). Even MechE & Electrical have easier time getting into Oil & Chemical industries, because there is need for several maintenance & controls engineers, but only a couple process. designers. Chemical Engineering is a highly respected engineering major, depending on who you ask I guess. It opens up doors to the biotechnology field, oil industry, nanoindustry, etc. We're pretty versatile engineers - we learn how to code, we delve in the ME field as well. We learn chemistry (we don't just stop at general chemistry - we go up to physical chemisty which is known as quantum physics) , physics and math. On the other hand, when we talk about the automaton era- we really have to more specific. What i mean by that, it's that not only CE and EEs will play a big role in it. ChemEs will participate in the development of the material's that CEs and EEs will work on. And this automaton era is undoubtedly under the field of nanotechnology, which is predominantly run by ChemEs and MEs.

Really good video. I like the organized way you compared the different disciplines. You certainly do think like an engineer. I have degrees in chemical engineering, and do agree with your comments about it and its relative ranking. Many engineering disciplines have undergone huge transformations in the past decades, most notably because of the introduction of computer tools to do the jobs. An interesting thing about chemical engineering is how it has expanded to now include other areas, such as biochemical engineering. In fact, many college departments have changed their names to "Chemical and Biochemical Engineering". There are a lot of reasons for this. Starting in the 1970's, the methods of chemical engineering were increasing being applied to biochemical problems. But also, I think there was some angst within the departments that chemical engineering as a discipline was topping out in terms of innovation, so the discipline went looking for interesting new areas to develop. Except for the exploration aspect that you mention, petroleum engineers and chemical engineers are very similar. Oil refineries, for instance, would hire both, often doing the same jobs. Cheers!

I’m not American. I’m an electrical engineer. I did both my bachelors and masters at top tier US schools, ranked among the best 100 universities in the whole world. Went back to my stupid country immediately after graduation (worst decision I’ve ever made). Couldn’t find a job for two years. After finding a job and working for a number of years, I’m currently making less than $32k a year. And no, the cost of living here is very high. Ironically, salaries here actually get reduced (not raised) and taxes get tripled (during the pandemic and going forward). Fuck my country. What I’m trying to say is that the stats you presented don’t represent all countries. Definitely there is no 330k openings for electrical engineers in my shitty country, and no way a lucky employee could make around $100k a year. I envy you, American people. You should be happy and proud of what got 👍🏻.

And the video is very interesting for those who would think for going into engineering field
@minhquando1004 жыл бұрын
Like Peter Theil said in his book Zero to One, technology isn't really growing as fast as people think it is. There's been a very narrow cone of progress in the software and computing hardware industries but most other industries are stagnant. Hence why I think these statistics are very misleading. Here's my take on some of these majors: Computer engineering: pretty good field, great if you're trying to go into chip design or embedded systems (aka firmware engineering), the computing hardware industry aka the semiconductor industry will definitely be one of the most influential industries moving forward into the future. More specifically, GPU manufacturers like nvidia and possibly AMD will play a crucial role in the rise of machine learning due to the need for massive parallelism. Therefore, computer engineering is solid but make sure to take classes relating to high performance computing (HPC) and general purpose GPU programming if your school offers it. Expect a lot of job growth for computer engineering positions. Electrical engineering: probably a pretty solid field but electrical engineers are probably going to have to compete with computer engineers for jobs in the semiconductor industry. Industrial engineering: if I'm not mistaken, this field is also called systems engineering, and at my school it's also called operations research (engineering management wouldn't be a bad name for it either). Probably not a good degree to get as an undergrad but i think a masters degree in industrial engineering would pay off big time if you're planning on moving into a management position. I would also go so far as to say, industrial engineering is probably a much better degree to get than an mba if you're an engineer trying to get into management. Lord knows why engineers are still getting MBAs these days, seems like a waste of time. Chemical engineering: it's literally like biomedical engineering but more chem classes (in fact, according to my professor, many chemical engineering departments have integrated biomedical engineering into their department). From what I've read, job prospects don't seem to be very good, I can kind of see the possibility of chemical engineers working in the semiconductor industry (after all Gordon Moore was a chemist) but that's a stretch. Personally, I would stay away from chemical engineering, if you're premed and you're not sure about medical school chemical engineering might not be a bad option. But even then, if you're not sure about medical school, just do CS and take the premed courses in the summer.

Factoring in the location of primary employment its no surprise the pay average for computer and electronically engineering. When silicon valley is probably the top three most expensive places to live in the U.S. I am studying civil and had an internship where the project engineers are making between $95k-$118k - depending on bonuses - in the bay area with a construction firm. Civil Engineers are everywhere so in a cheaper cost of living area of course they are paid less which pulls the average down. If the end goal is just living comfortably just pick any of those majors and invest your money wisely in my opinion.

Any degree that trains a student for specific kind of employment(s) is the best degree. It is extremely important that the student pursuing a degree knows his set of employers during the training. A student pursuing Nursing and RN with and without specialization knows some hospital is her employer. Petroleum Engineers know some Petroleum rig is definitely his potential employer. A chemical Engineer knows one of the chemical industry is his her potential employer. An Electrical, Mechanical and Civil Engineers with FE/EIT and later PE has a huge probability to be employed by city or Federal government. It is extremely important to keep the possible set of employers and Industry in mind and prepare oneself in school and get the training accordingly. If a mechanical engineer wants to design and produce machine parts or mechanical assemblies, he or she should tailor her education and training accordingly. Get the the training in operations of machine tools, CNC, robotics, jigs and fixtures, metrology, metallurgy with the primary goal in mind. If also interested in quality assurance, then train himself or herself in statistics, six sigma. Education or course work should be treated as training for job. Take courses that are job training oriented. Specific kind or category of Employment or business should be the focus right from the sophomore year.

When you reference salaries, those salaries are median for that degree type, not starting out of college. Also, when you say there are 300,000+ electrical engineering jobs, you keep saying "openings." Is that right? Man there isn’t any money in engineering anymore especially Chem E(my field) that one is def on its way out, many companies are pushing certain duties on the Chemist with the exception of cost analysis and up scaling . (that pay scale isn’t at all accurate you’re looking at 65-75k a year as a new grad)I went back to school and got my BSN, I made a good bit more money, and since this pandemic, the hourly rates have skyrocketed to $ 80-95 an hour for ER and ICU nurses. Engineering was fun but now it seems more like a far away pipe dream of an Ideal job, unfortunately ideals don’t pay the bills. Right now I’m in CRNA school, it is a great nexus where science; chemistry/biology/pharmacology meet. If you love science and want guaranteed employment, nurse anesthetist is the way to go.

Shane Hummus - The Success GPS man, I do my best to try and school up the young ones that are considering a STEM degree just to give them an idea of what they’re getting themselves into. To me It’s like one of those commitments when your kid tells you he wants to join the military and you have to seriously break down the pros and cons. But still I wouldn’t discourage anyone from it, considering we need innovators and the fact that these programs nowadays do everything in their power to make sure these kids make it through the pipeline so that saying “I’m not good at math” is no longer an excuse.
