A walk-through of how I use Garmin Virb Edit on the Mac to add data overlay to my videos with data from my sensors. Also a few tips along the way for gauge size/transformations and how to include more than one source of data for comparison videos.

Hey buddy what about multiple clips from the same ride? You can sync them to?
@CoachNealF
@CoachNealF Жыл бұрын
@@ReadytoDIRT If you are still wondering about syncing clips, I just did my first video/data sync using VIRB, syncing the ride data to multiple clips linked together. Got it to work quite well after fudging about with geo-syncing each clip. After clicking geo-sync, I adjusted the slider bar on the right to match the elapsed time on that video clip. Here is how it went: each clip was 8:52 in length, but my gopro turned on 11 seconds AFTER I started my head unit. That meant to sync accurately, I needed to add 11 seconds each time I synced the data to each clip. Example. Clip #2 started at 8:52, so I adjusted the data slider bar to 9:03. Worked pretty spot on.

I’ve had a few issues with this when I started using virb a while ago when editing the video. Haven’t used it a lot but think it works better if you do the data overlay before you edit video or else you have to do the above work for each clip and I usually try to trim sections out of videos . That is swear jar material!!

Love this Shane! I used to have a Tom Tom Bandit that had this sort of functionality built in. Recently updated to a Go Pro 8 and disappointed to see that not only is the Go Pro Quik software no longer supported as a desktop app, but the gauge overlay functionality is fairly limited. So pleased that I can use this to grab data from my Fenix 6 to overlay video from the GoPro. Inner nerd is doing back flips right now!

Shane, when using the "G-Metrix Sync" function, do you know a way to have is show speed in the preview window instead of heart rate? This would really help me more easily sync my videos. It seems I can delete the heart rate and logo fields but I don't know how to add any. Maybe it's a default setting?

Given the short battery life of GoPro (and the need to avoid long videos and big files) I don't record the entire ride, just sections. I then use the lap function on the Elemnt Bolt at the same time I start and stop each recording to make G-metrix syncing easier.

The gradnet data is only as good as what is recorded... and some head units are horrible at recording elevation. Where you place the GPS unit will also have an impact on the quality of the elevation data. Here's more detail on that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIHcdqeQfZiEl7c

Awesome introduction to using Garmin Virb software with my GoPro 7 Silver for outlays on my cycling video. I recorded one of my summer rides for indoor cycling during local Michigan winters. I use the MapMyRun Android app to record a .TCX file. The .TCX file is not compatible with Garmin Virb, so I found an app (TXC Converter) to convert this to a .GPX file. I rendered my Garmin Virb video for a 1.2 hour ride to a high qualify 4K video. I do have 2 questions. Garmin Virb estimated the output video file would be 24 GB, turned out to be 70.7 GB. Question #1: For a 1.2 hour ride is a 70.7 GB file normal? Question #2: One of my Virb gauges was Incline. In part of my video I am going up hill on a street with lots of trees, the incline number jumps around from +10 to -5 to +6 within seconds. When I look at the GPX file the altitude amounts do randomly jump up and down. Is this normal? Is there a software to smooth out this type of jumping GPS data?

Thanks so much for this video. Was using this as a great tutorial on how to put together a video as you do. Now it's just dialing in the other elements such as the audio quality, reducing the vibration through the mount to the camera. What mount do you use? Do you use ProTune and if so, what setting? Also, I was using a fairly specced out laptop (have given up on desktops due to space and power) with i7-7700HQ, 16GB max speed (for the laptop) RAM, NVME SSD, NVIDIA GTX 1050 with 4 GB RAM amongst other features. It took a fair amount of time to process the videos still. What is your setup for your computer and what do you record in? Do you do 4k videos?
@gplama
@gplama 5 жыл бұрын
Any mount. Typically it's under the GPS head unit on the front. No ProTune. MacBook Pro 2017 for processing. FCPX for mastering everything after VIRB Edit has done the overlays. 4K sometimes.
