@@hkr0065 The setting is just very different. A whole corner of the world we haven't seen. It was like watching Black Panther for the first time, but also this is relatively technology free so most of what you see is martial arts and mystical things. We've seen mystical with Dr Strange but this is a different flavor. There are some cameos but if you didn't have them and you didn't know this was Marvel, I think you wouldn't connect the dots (other than the film structure is fairly familiar). Oh and I think having all those creatures also helped it differentiate it from the other movies. The big final battle made me feel like I was watching Mulan, Raya and somehow Monster Hunter at the same time. It was fun imo

You guys obviously weren't paying attention in the second half because your complaint about how the villians arrived to the heroes location at the end was explained. I was on the complete opposite side of their opinion on the last half of the movie. Wow. “What a climax” is what I thought. I genuinely didn’t expect the last half of the film to turn out how it did. One of the best Marvel movies I’ve seen that wasn’t a culmination of characters like Avengers SINCE Black Panther. I actually really hope this movie gets the respect it deserves. And the Jackie Chan feel was actually because HIS actual fight choreographer was involved with the movie and passed away after production. You’ll notice his name in the credits before the last credit scene! RIP Brad Allan❤️

that ending was epic. I didn't expect it, but it was spectacular and necessary to put Shang-chi on the level of other issues in the MCU. Without it, he's a small-time character of no consequence. Black Widow failed for me because it felt so small. To the point in the video though, if I recall correctly, the big FX parts are already handled by a department in marvel/Disney that is separate from the director and their initial vision. Regardless, this was a 10 for me.

@@JumpPanda I think a lot of people forget that these are shared continuity and those third acts need to define the hero and the struggles. That ending ten years ago would have seemed over the top, but in a post thanos, post-blip world, I find it totally believable that these characters would get dragged into something so extreme, and choose to charge into battle. By doing Shang chi is no own the contextual power level of the top tier heroes. Without that end sequence he would have been down there with ant-man, widow and hawkeye. It was a breathe-taking sequence that absolutely had purpose for the character and the stories moving forward.
@deangelo3342

@@rui5421 Tbf, you don't need to go big with something like Shang chi. When the core story of the movie is about family, it should of stick to it. The ending shouldn't be this thing that the main character isn't in conflict with, the ending should of kept the conflict with his father as he was the villain of the movie. We can have sequels that amplifies Shang chi to be a more powerful character, but a first movie like this isn't what Shang chi needed. Imo, Shang chi needed a much better written origin story about being good when the temptation of being what his father made him to be is always around the corner

The bus scene was one of several scenes that I wish I had a pause and rewind button to re-watch all the amazing stunts and effects work. It was truly incredible. So many scenes were straight up Jacki Chan inspired. From the trailer I was really doubtful that the main character had enough charisma to carry the movie, but he did a pretty good job and pairing him with Awkwafina was brilliant. This is why I like Marvel. If a movie is ma'ine and or low full price. They'll learn what went wrong and what work. Shang Chi is doing the same thing the first film Avengers, Black Panther, and Capt Marvel just name a few. A lot of world building before they make a deeper story. Example, the first Captain America movie was very campy, but Winter Solider and Civil War expanded storytelling. Also, it comes down to who's directing/writing it.

32:30 "We just need a big monster battle, theres no reason, they just rise up for no reason" Literally the movie has explained through character interactions and minor expositions...the two monsters theyre talking about...the other soul sucking monster are the monster dragons they've fought in the past and has kept imprisoned for 1000s of years and tries to manipulate people like Wenwu into freeing the dragon by using his dead wife as a trick. And the other monster/dragon, its been explained through a scene where the dragon helped fought their ancestors win a war of soul sucking dragons.... I just feel like some of the criticism of Korey and martin is kinda just base on not paying enough attention. And really saying Black Panther did stuff better is just unfair. If anything Black panther is on the same level as Shang chi here. To imply that at the battle at the end of the movie is just people fighting feels pointless, same goes for Black Panther... at the last battle of the movie, its just people fighting. Korey and Martin can have their own opinions, thats fine. But i feel like their understanding of the story, characters and plot is pretty narrow sometimes...its one of those movies that i feel like they have to just go watch a second time to maybe try and understand whats going on.

The villain getting to the city with his forces was explained in the movie. He had the secret map to the ONE safe pathway that only opens once a year. @Fawkes Fox I mean in a way he's more Canadian then Chinese. Yes, he was born in China and that's his heritage and a part of his identity. But I think being an Asian-Canadian who immigrated as a child and got all his formative schooling as a Canadian, I tend to think of him as a Canadian Actor of Chinese decent tbh. And the Kim's TV show was mostly about that first generation/second generation disconnect of being a "hyphen" Canadian immigrant.

One of the themes of the film is he is taking parts of both his parents. So his father is giving him the rings as he is dies. He also is more powerful than his father who only had his human power were shang chi could tap into both his father rings and martial arts and his mother ability. That was explained at the beginning, the middle, and the ending. I don't know how you missed that, but it was explained multiple times. People tend to forget the whole blaccent controversial w awkwafina is one she's from queens NY and two she's also an actress. Awkwafina is born in queens and been into black and underground rap culture since she was 13. She is pro black and LGBTQ before it was popular. And the whole ocean 8 and crazy rich Asians situation was that the directors wanted her especially for that role. Even ocean 8 director said they wanted her to "play an urban queen girl" which awkwafina obliged. So people and at her makes sense but it's not entirely her fault. Dear Korey and Martin. From Shang-Chi’s Aunt Nan while explaining at the wooden tapestry:..... “Our people lived in peace and prosperity until the attack of “The Dweller in Darkness”. He came with his army devouring every soul in its path and with each kill grew stronger decimating our largest cities. They were headed to your universe. The leaders of Ta-Los sent their strongest warriors from reaching the portal to your world. Our ancestors were no match for them until “THE GREAT PROTECTOR” joined their fight and turned the tide together and pushed the “Dweller in Darkness” into the dark gate. Locked him behind that gate ever since. Empowered by the power of “THE GREAT PROTECTOR” and the gift she gave us”.........The Mandarin broke the dark gate and let the Dweller in Darkness out. SO THINGS WERENT JUST HAPPENING.

Where she explained that was the source of her and her peoples powers. -The maze had a path that was obtained by the map made of water that the Dragon statue made so the villains used that one. -The Dragon appeared because Shang Chi has the heart of the dragon as thats where his mothers people got their powers. The Dragon was a guardian in that realm and the reappearance of the dark one summoned the Dragon. I really like the motivation of the Villain he just wanted his wife back..

There's also been a lot of discussions not only in the US or China. Lots of Asian-Americans, Asian-Canadians etc. like me like that the film touches on humanizing us and challenges the idea we are these 'exotic' beings meant to be conquered instead of understood (Anna May Wong being typecast constantly as the Dragon Lady is one example). I do wish the film could have touched on that later point more, in light of all that's happened lately, but it's helped promulgate our community in a much more positive direction that's worth appreciating.

Judging by the comments, this is probably one of the reviews most disagreed with by Double Toasted fans. And I don't blame them. When Korey and Martin say "things just happen at the end", they make it seem like Rise of Skywalker lmao. The end battle has more weight and emotional stakes than a lot of MCU films. It's essentially a son pleading with his father and realizing he's gone mad. While the 2nd half is disney formulaic, I NEVER thought I'd see a younger MCU hero actually say the lines, "I'm going to have to kill my father." Simu delivered that line perfectly and it's ballsy for a Marvel and Disney film to have that. Can we also recognize Marvel allowed their main hero to be a murderer at 14?! Lmao. I also think Korey was heavily exaggerating or just saw a different film when the fight scenes came on. Simu's fighting style was nothing like Jackie Chan's. Simu never apologized or was whimsical when kicking ass like Jackie. He straight up murked folks. Lastly, give credit to this film for taking the chance and have 50% of this movie in Mandarin Chinese. A lot of Hollywood films won't take this risk since a lot of audiences are lazy with reading.
