I wish they offered sign language in school like they do other languages. I taught myself the basics just for fun/hobby when I was a teenager.

They did at my school! Took it all of high school

They do, but it’s an elective (meaning no required) so most students don’t take it unless they are trying for honors or something and have to. Sign Language should really be required however, because unlike vocal language, deafness or hearing disorders can effect anyone at any age.

They offered it at my university when i was studying translation but just when i was about to take it as an elective, the school limited all asl classes to majors only. 😡

What is impressed me is he fit it into the character by saying his dad makes him learn. I don't know if he was saying that out of character, but it totally works in character that languages might have been part of the assassin training Shang Chi was given for half his life by his father. Sign in particular, which would be very useful when trying to be a silent assassin.

Will never understand why ASL is not taught as a 2nd language to everyone. Even if we don't have disability as we get older our hearing and even speech can be hindered so this would a great way to communicate, also in medical emergency where you aren't able to speak this could save lives. It took 2 years to ask our High School to offer ASL courses as 2nd language by time they approved it I was already a senior and about to graduate. So have to learn ASL on my own

Agreed. Alot of people probably meet more deaf people in our everyday lives anyways than people from other countries who can only speak their native language

@@yyg4632 my mother taught us at least our ABC when we where young and we picked it little by little as a grew up. Was thankful and so proud of myself when I got to use it first time for a customer that made me want to learn more. So my niece I did same to her 5years old I taught her her ABC and her school offered ASL and now she loves it

This is so beyond beautiful 🤩 I can’t stop crying. I grew up with deaf people and I can’t tell you how much appreciation is felt and recognized when we see other people learning ASL or sign language. Communication is key and they are just both beautiful people !!! 🫶🏼 blessings

I had a deaf boss once and learned ASL for her because she was awesome. it's come in handy more often than I thought it would in my regular life, and also led me to start learning more languages other than English and Spanish. it's fun being able to communicate in multiple forms.

I took a couple years of ASL in community college. I absolutely loved it and wanted to be an interpreter. After puberty, as we get older it's harder to learn languages. ASL is great for this reason also because you both say and see the sign. Adding that visual learning aspect makes a big difference. It's important to use it or you risk forgetting what you learn. Unfortunately for me I got very ill and had cognitive damage so I don't remember much of the few years that I took. But I would really love to learn again.

ASL is really a fun language and it's so nice to have on the back burner for when a customer comes in who is deaf or if you just meet a deaf person out on the street like this. I have lots of trouble with other language but so far ASL has been the only language I've been able to learn any of.
