I have a very similar approach to Dr Hamilton and have had similar results with those very scared patients. I have just quit being a vet after 18 years because I can't take the abuse of clients and their unrealistic expectations anymore. I can't take working 10 hour days without a break, day after day and then getting abuse from people because I'm running 15 minutes late. True, it's a small proportion of clients, but they are getting more numerous by the day and the stress of it all is beyond bearable. Even 10 years ago you would only get a client like this every month or so. Now it's daily and often more than once. Vets are leaving the profession, and more tragically many are taking their own lives.

Dogs are babies and they all deserve love , support, care, and protection, just like children. Children and animals should be protected and cared for as a number one priority in society but they are not. They should out law dog and cat breeding and take care of the dogs and cats in the shelters. Also, certain people should never be allowed to bring children into this world and the system should stop putting children in foster care when they know these children are going to be mistreated and abused. Society has devolved, not evolved and its shameful and nothing but depravity and obscene. Dogs, kitty's, and children are all angels.

I was working with a mistrustful 17 year old chihuahua who the owner said had always been terrified at the vets and would likely try to bite me. I was seeing him weekly. By the third week as soon as he entered the room he walked over to me and leaned into my chest for a cuddle. These types of experiences are my proudest achievements, not the heroic life-saving surgeries, or the long and difficult recoveries for illness (although that is rewarding too) but making a scared dog happy to see you and trust you enough to "examine his boo-boo".

@Priscilla Most dogs don't just randomly attack you. The thing is dogs are just like people. Most of them are nice, but some of them have issues. You just have to know to read a dog in order to know if they or just normal dogs or if they have some issues that make them aggressive. Like their rail or and their nose and their eyes and their whole body language really. You don't want to go hug random people who are in an agressive posture like they are ready to stab someone either. Over all dogs are not dangerous. Humans can be way more dangerous as ar as I am aware.

I wish more veterinarians and pet owners were as wise and kind as Dr. Hamilton. That one concept of changing a dog’s perspective by use of compassion and love says it all. So many humans take for granted the ease with which our pets navigate living with us. Just imagine how difficult it would be for one species to be separated from its own kind and placed in a location where no one speaks your own language or uses the same non-verbal (body language) signals. The food is not your species’ original diet. The physical exercise you need is not possible in most cases. The emotional and intellectual stimuli you need is not provided. And yet, our sweet pets will sacrifice themselves to protect us - to be by our sides in sickness or during times of grief. They are the better of the two in this partnership in all ways and are more humane than most humans.

@DrRossBernstein2 жыл бұрын
I wish this were the case. But sadly it is not. Veterinarians all know how to do what he’s doing and we love to do it. But instead we are busy saving the lives of sick or injured animals and do not have the time to befriend a nervous but otherwise healthy pet. Most veterinary clinics are booked out several months and sick animals are even being turned away from emergency rooms. The veterinary industry is going through a crisis right now and although the video is heart-warming, it paints a very inaccurate picture of what goes on behind the scenes in an animal hospital. Please don’t think your veterinarian doesn’t care if they don’t do this- you’d rather it not be your pet whose life they are trying to save
@Rae7772 жыл бұрын
@@DrRossBernstein No joke. I left the veterinary industry last year to start in my career field. There's major distress right now due to the vet shortage that was exacerbated by COVID. We always tried to use a fear free approach, but sometimes when they were sick or extremely injured, those approaches wouldn't work and they'd need immediate treatment. I just wish there were more time and more vets. The vets I know are amazing and put their all into every animal they see, but it's emotionally fatiguing. I just hope they don't burn out.

I've had to say goodbye to many of my patient's at the end of their lives and giving hugs, that warm human touch is just so necessary to us all. Animals need that too. I assumed it was a bizarre woke thing and that he didn’t want to assign the dogs their gender. I’m still not entirely sure that isn’t the real reason either.
@cleverusername93692 жыл бұрын
@@sukijay4990 I can, with authority, assure you it's 1,000% definitely not. It's basically the same thing waiters and waitresses do, "how are we doing tonight" or "did we save any room for dessert" except in the vet field it's genuine, not just being ingratiating for tips. Your frankly bizarre notion of vets not wanting to assign a dog it's gender is a little ridiculous, given that veterinarians literally remove animals' sex organs on a daily basis. Nobody that's qualified to do surgery and has gone through at least 6 years of veterinary medical school is crazy enough to think animals give a shit about gender any deeper than the instinct of "can I mate with that."
@sukijay49902 жыл бұрын
@@cleverusername9369 that bizarre notion, as you describe it, is happening in the world right now with personal pronouns and some radical parents not assigning a gender to their babies because they want to let them decide for themselves. This is despite the clear presence of male v female organs. There are males allowed to compete as women in sport. It’s happening whether you choose to believe it or not, and quite frankly, with so much woke craziness going on in the world it would not be much of a leap to believe that vets in America have been told to observe woke rules and use a gender unspecific way of talking about the animals in their care. I think using ‘we’ sounds odd and here in Australia none of the vets I take my animals to use it. So there you go. A difference of opinion here but that’s ok.
@cleverusername93692 жыл бұрын
@@sukijay4990 again, I'm going to reiterate that veterinarians literally remove animals' genitals, and to that point, referring to a spayed or neutered animal in a gender neutral manner would actually be more medically accurate, not "woke". But yeah no, vets definitely don't do that. It's kind of a huge, massive leap to conflate what some "radical" parents do with their kids with how vets talk to or about their patients (and look, I don't understand the whole obsession with gender identity lately, but since I neither care nor does it affect me, I just stay out of it, it's none of my business.) It seems to me like you're looking for some "wokeness" to be outraged about where none exists. It's just a good vet, treating his patients and clients like family, not a guy pushing his ideas of how life should be lived on other people. Lighten up.

The lessons from God can be very challenging sometimes, but they are there to teach us right from wrong, fairness from the unfair, and some of us have to learn the hard way (me included), what true love and compassion really is, by letting us experience it's opposite. (I don't know, if you understand, that God is real, but to me, it's an undeniable fact!) You see, if you understand what true justice is certainly not, because you've experienced it's opposite, injustice, then you begin to understand, what true justice really is! And if you understand what true neighbourly love is certainly not, because you've experienced it's opposite, indifference, then you begin to understand, what true neighbourly love really is! And so on... That's why we experience these seemingly unfair challenges, which The Creator/God gives us, so that we can learn, what we still need to learn about righteousness! The true purpose of life, as I understand it, is to learn to master righteousness to a certain high degree, and we live many lives to get it right, and the Karma we bring with us from a former life determines, which challenges we get in this life. If you can begin to see these challenges as a possibility to grow spiritually, and thereby grow morally, in the eyes of God, then you've understood the true purpose of, why we have to go through them! Think about, what you've learned from your challenges, and use that experience in a positive way to become a good example for others via your fair behaviour (even though many will not recognize your good intentions, it's never a waste to try)! To learn righteousness, you need to practise the following, with the aim to eventually master this basic moral principle, which is the basic "law of Love" of God: "You shall not do unto others, as you would not, that others should do unto you. You shall do unto others, as you would, that others should do unto you." (Jesus) - which is the same as: "Love thy neighbour as thyself." (Jesus) - Much easier said than done, I know, but as we all know: Practise makes perfect eventually! 🙂 This moral principle also apply if you feel a need to criticize or correct someone, then do it in such a way, that you would want to be criticized or corrected yourself: (try to) remain fair and respectful! Remember, that you're in training practising this, and therefore you'll not always in any situation get it right in the beginning. As with any other skill, you wish to master, you will fail in the process of learning, but the more you practise the skill, the better you'll get at it, and that's the same with mastering the skill of righteousness. To be fair, you should know, that I'm not religious in any way. I'm just someone, who seeks the absolute truth, and who have come to some conclusions during this search (I believe, I've found the basic part of the spiritual truth: Learning righteousness), which I hope can be of some positive use to you! 🙂

Dogs feel fear at the vet because of all the new smells, the smells of distress from previous dogs and cats at the vet, it's an unfamiliar place with new people who smell different. Please don't automatically assume there was cruelty or abuse with these dogs. Many dogs are frightened when they go to the vet. Some may have had bad experiences at vet offices in the past and associate the smells with those experiences. Some may not be properly socialized to new environments or new people. Some may be coming in because of an illness and are just not "feeling it". Each animal is different, their experiences are different. You have to learn to adapt to the animal.

More than likely due to covid protocols, the owner had to wait in the parking lot while the exam was happening, so the dog didn't have their person with them, it smells like 100s of other animals in there, there are medicinal smells, anesthetic, people are tired, and it's utterly believable that the pet just shut down without their person. As a vet nurse, my coworkers and I do our best to emulate what this doctor is doing, gain trust, and make what can be an overwhelming experience a positive one. To the point where pets are happy to go with me to the treatment room while leaving their human behind.
