Shanghai Tongji Standard Reissue Wristwatch Review

Just a quick overview of a Chinese Tongji watch reproduction from Shanghai Watch Factory.

The original versions of these had much shorter hands.The reason was that the applied indices stood up so high that longer hands would have caught on them. I have one from the 1970s. Glorious to look at. You just squeeze a 20mm strap into the 19mm lugs Works perfectly. The original used Tonghi movements. Seagull were the first to be able to make their own non Tonghi movement watch when they showed their wonderful St5 19 jewel movement which was beautifully engraved to the Chinese authorities. Alas the St5 is no longer made. I have a few new old stock ones from the 1970s. The Seagull St6 movement is used in the 2018 reissue of the Timex Marlin. The St6 is also available as an automatic.

A very interesting perspective and particularly helpful regarding the water resistance (or lack thereof). As a dress watch, there's no need to dunk it in water! Though care is needed in rainy weather.

I had a Shanghai 7120 with the ss-7 movement, which is the more common version of the Tongji统机, I would say. Quite a lovely watch, easy to find an old one with inexpensive price.

@@PLC303 as long as the watch is not a Frankenstein, it is a ss7 movement inside of a 7120 watch, it could be marked with ZSH though. Just a different marking, basically no difference to any other movement inside of a 7120. I am not quite sure about the production date, the 3 digits after 7120 should tell roughly when it was produced, and there could be 2 digits on the movement giving some more precise information about the production date.

I have been waiting for this review. A very nice watch: elegant and simple, as I like it. Too bad for the loose crown - maybe just a question of quality control on a single specimen, but still, a negative for it. About the movement: I bought a $20 watch from AliExpress with a modern, skeletonized version of that movement; it required a bit of adjusting, but after that, it ticked along for over a month at about +1 s per day, which is not bad at all! Now it is about 4-5 s/day, but still quite good. So, I think I'll go hunting for one of these Tongji reissues - if I can get one for under $50, it's a good purchase.

Luca Bergamasco it is truly amazing how many of these movements are still being cranked out and stuffed into cheap watches today. I wonder just exactly how many millions of these movements the Chinese have produced over the years?

I bought one of these watches in Ali express and my one is from the 70s. I serviced the watch myself and I can tell when a movement is old. The O rings ware very old too. I belive your watch is from the 70s but old stock. If you replace de O ring you can use it in water. If you want I can make a video in my chanel so you can see. Tks

Yeah. I’m going to have to start looking around for a proper caseback wrench 🔧 for this watch. I find these Chinese watches kind of intriguing. I might pick up another Shanghai and maybe a Beijing.

Great watch as long as you don't wear it.. Sadly that's the problem with most cheap Chinese watches and what a pity. There's nothing wrong with the movements in general, you just have to clean and service them from the factory when new. But the cases are just crap. Diver homage watches that you can't even wash you hands whilst wearing them, now that really does seem silly.

Save your money. New old junk. Mine ran for about a month and then the mainspring snapped. The dealer in China ghosted me. AliExpress ghosted me.
