We completely wore out the first ones, but I still have the 2nd one she created for me. I also Love what you did with the buttons on there as well!!! The whole thing is so cool!!! Crazy quilting began during the Victorian Era. Originally, woman would create these in small pieces to hang on the wall as a bragging item on expensive fashion she owned and to remind her to share travel spots she went to. Later, the e been made for lots of different reasons. I guess the most original crazy quilting was too not wast scraps for basic family needs in staying warm. Recycling!

I had a terrible, awful Great Aunt who was the meanest lady you've ever met, but was an incredible seamstress. She used to make crazy quilts with her scraps and give them to people, and they are absolutely gorgeous. I'd love to say that looking at them brought back fond memories of a lovely relative, but at least they were pretty!

My great grandmother made a couple of crazy quilts in the 1910s. When my mom passed away, I was sure they disappeared in the estate sale-but they DIDN’T!!!! My sister has them! Whew! They’re amazing.

Beautiful work. You are doing exactly what women of the past did. They made it up as they went along. You don’t have to follow a prescribed stitch pattern. Make it up and enjoy the results. Positively is the key , don’t put yourself down for winging it. That is the way it done. ❤ keep going!.

Last year a friend gave me all of the scraps from the old sewing classroom from his school. Sadly, they have discontinued the sewing class. But I was given bins of fabric scraps, ribbons, and buttons. I started a crazy quilt, and worked on it religiously for 3-4 months, and then set it aside for other crafts. You have inspired me to get it out again and set to work. I may leave the concept of a full-size quilt, and go for a lovely robe. Thank you, Shannon for what you do! I love how, like so many of us, you make do with what you have or can find.

I made a full size crazy quilt by accident. Just kept making another block for my grandmother (she was supposed to make some too but didn't). took a couple of years but suddenly the stack of blocks made a complete quilt.

You have excellent timing. I just brought home 60+ decades of fabric a scraps from my late grandmother. While some of that fabric will go into completing the 50-odd unfinished quilts that were mixed in, there is plenty to spare. Once I get past Thanksgiving, I will dig in and see what looks like fun to share, which was my plan all along. I will keep in mind to look for a handful of warm, cool, and bright options.

I am so excited to see the crazy quilt aesthetic making a comeback! I absolutely love the look. My Grandmother used to make me small crazy quilts for my dolls and I own a 1907 crazy quilt with the date and the peoples names embroidered onto it. I am now going to look through my scrap stash and see what I have that will work for a crazy quilt. This will be a great winter project since I can't work outside in my garden until spring.

Oh my goodness you’re making me want to dump everything and do this right now! I love how you just made up stitches as you went, cause honestly, you can try to get a solid encyclopedia of embroidery stitch names, but there’s so much disagreement across the world and you can vary every single stitch in so many ways, it’s like… why bother, just stitch whatever you want!

That’s such a good point… like that feather stitch… when I was looking up the name for the video, there were diagrams of all the variations, and it was wild! Like at what point does it stop being feather stitch, and start being a different kind of stitch? STITCH IT ALL, WHO CARES AS LONG AS YOU LIKE IT!! So true! 💙💜💚

I started with Chain Stitch as a base and ended up with 90 different stitches that you could say were all just variations on chain stitch but also all have their own names (and multiple names at that), and it's just like... at some point, you gotta stop caring about the labels and just make stuff.

Love this! Please do more. 😊 I actually made myself a new purse kinda like this. I made a purse over 10 years ago, which was falling apart, and everytime I tried to find a new one (it just wasn't the right size or style) I never ended up using them. So one day I though why don't I just make another like my old one I love? I used old worn out jeans (all different colors) and patched it together. Then I added lots of embroidery all over it. I love it so much! Definitely a great way to use up scraps otherwise too small for other projects.

You're reminding me of my daughter not having a plan and a contingency or 14 is truly painful for her. Stepping out of that and making something so beautiful and stunning is something to be very proud of! Congratulations on stepping way out of your comfort zone!!! Thank you! For me it's less about the contingencies (because I do know that crafting goes sideways ALL the time, and I kinda relish in the problem solving that it causes), but I DO really like having a plan, and structure to start out with - whether that's having an arsenal of stitches that I can use to embroider, or knowing exactly which pattern I want to start out with.... it makes it feel like at least starting out is going to be controlled, and then when things go kiddywampus, it's a bit less chaotic?! I dunno, maybe not 🤣

​@7juno Most fabric shops sell remnants at considerable savings. Also, some thrift shops (more close to Amish communities in my experience) sell remnants or leftover fabric at bargain prices. And as mentioned above, clothes that might be tossed usually have sections worth saving as scraps (and certainly buttons or zippers).

40 years ago I made up this method of crazy patchwork (no KZbin back then) and made a big quilt cover for myself. I still use it and love it. Over the years I have had to replace most of the embroidery (the thread wore out) and a few of the patches that were old or recycled and getting dangerously thin with washing and use. I still love it, each patch has memories of my youth. More recently I have been making fabric using the same fold and tack method but stitching them down with some of the fancy stitches on my machine. It’s so much fun and the thread is much more durable. I hope you still enjoy your lovely bag 40 years from now 😊

The bag looks really cute and reflects your personality. I think it's fine as it is for a knitting bag. Can also double as a shopping tote too. I don't do crazy quilts. I either do 4 inch hexagon or 4-7 squares. Then it goes to charity. Often my cabbage can be used up for doll clothes, dolls or small shirt. All of these goes to a charity Xmas program. So I see these things now and then in my town.

I was so blessed too find a Reader's Digest book of from Embroidery to rug- making. Hard back books are the that last a long time plus you can print them out and laminate them too carry with project and could be put into a 3 ring notebook.

many years ago I did this for a daybed, but on the sewing machine ... considering I was not yet a 12 step graduate, I did most of it while intoxicated ... I can't believe how good it came out nevertheless ... when I moved from NJ to Hawaii I gave it away and noticed it was pretty well done except some of the pieces were not laying flat they had ripples here and there. These were all geometric, not all different shapes like yours. Such a great piece, thanx for bringing me back some nostalgia from the 80's of my life. Your work is exquisite as well as your instruction and energy. Thank you!

Embroideryis fantastic because we use many of the same stitches today as yesteryears past, and free style embroidery is always in fashion, making up whatever stitches work for you and your project.

lol... first, let me say, your channel has never come up on my feed before. This video is the first. And, I am slowly working through some crazy quilt squares so I was keen to save it to my 'watch later' list. I had some good crazy quilt fabric and a friend gifted me her small stash and I created 9 squares because I was making a big mess with all the fabric spread out trying to choose colors so I just wanted to get the piecing done and I'll get to the embroidery this winter. I never throw anything away because I also do small mixed media pieces and you never know when a small scrap of fabric is just right for a collage. I was thinking you were in Montreal (okay... I was jumping around in the video and likely missed the full story) and overseas postage can be pricy but I was willing to try for a flat envelope and test out what it would cost. Then the address popped up and ... you are just across the river from me! We could likely meet up for coffee! But I'm definitely going to drop some fabric in the mail for you with my next art mailing (I mail regularly to friends across the country). Can't wait to see what you do with all the fabric sure to come your way.

Super fun to watch! My grandmother made many crazy quilts, one including jewel tone velvets, satins etc, which was my favorite. I do my own scrap fabric creations but have yet to do a crazy quilt.

Hi Shannon! I love this project. I save every scrap, no matter how small. The tiniest ones get collected until there is enough to stuff a dog bed, and anything over 1x1 goes toward an ongoing scrap quilt project or saved until I can use it for something else. This bag definitely inspired me to consider a more deliberate scrap patchwork project (as opposed to the current one which will be beautifully hideous with dozens of different clashing fabrics.) I would love to send some scraps your way! I know you said any type is welcome, but is there anything you would particularly fancy?

Stuffing the dog bed is literally genius - I don't ever stuff things for wearing with scraps because it's too heavy and doesn't really breathe, but the dog bed is PERFECT!! There isn't anything I'd fancy - maybe whatever you'd most like to see in a video, or if you have a good story behind some fabrics, you can send it with a little note?

My dog enjoys the scraps more than other types of stuffing because he likes to push the bed around and arrange it into a little nest, but I definitely wouldn't find it comfortable for anything I would use! I always feel bad throwing away the tiny scraps so I was very pleased to figure out it's his favorite bed stuffing. It's also nice because we can just throw the entire bed in the washing machine and dryer when needed. I will search through my scraps for some of my favorites for you. This is a great idea; I'm excited to possibly see my scraps in a video! And I will be sure to pull the address from the description; thanks for the heads up.

I’ve never been too fond of crazy quilts, however you may have changed my mind! I do love the freedom to create without a lot of rules and your more color controlled version is really pretty and inspiring! I have so many bobbles and treasures that can be added so I may have to give it a try. However, I’m wondering if it can first be sewn down with a machine and then embellished with the embroidery stitches??

I have done some mini crazy quilts to cover cloth hanger. I use old buttons as ‘stopper’ for thin strap cami. It make for some pretty padded hanger. Nice small projects.

I've always been primarily a paper/pencil and paint/canvas sort of artist, but I've always loved fiber arts and sewing and finally started to really dig into them as an adult. I REALLY want to embroider handmade clothes but it looks so complicated. Your method feels much easier for me me cuz it's a lot closer to doodling and I love doodles and drawing intricate patterns. This is all freehand, no rules to follow other than what I already know from being an artist and sewer for many years, and feels so much more accessible for me! I'm thinking a vest for myself, I have so many scrap fabrics! Tysm! I ADORE your content!

I made one crazy quilt project, *waaaaay* back when I took a sewing class in high school. It was before Christmas break, so we made crazy quilt Christmas stockings! Haven't made any patchwork projects since, but I would love to someday. Something like making a quilt block using scraps from each project, so I can remember all the gifts I've made for people over the years. I'll see if I can send you something special in the mail. Maybe some of that vintage fabric I got from the thrift store a few years back.

I have made 2 crazy quilts out of old sweatshirts. I sewed them onto a bedsheet. It makes a fun blanket/ bedspread. And besides that, it's a good way to use all those old sweatshirt parts that are nice and warm.
