Hi Jessie, Teochew is not a dialect of Hokkien. We're both part of the Minnan language family but we're not a dialect of each other. Great video as always otherwise!

Coming from Southeast Asia (particularly Indonesia) from where the term Hokkien entered English, I must clarify that when we say Hokkien we are referring to 閩南語泉漳片. NOT 閩南語 as a whole. This is a common misunderstanding for non-Southeast Asians so I hope that clarifies things. To add on, other languages that are part of 閩南語 such as 潮汕片 and 雷州片 we refer to Teochew and Luichew, and NOT Hokkien. The reason why we do this in Southeast Asia is because each of these groups have their separate communities and associations (會館). Hope you understand.

I'm so happy that people talk more about Teochew. I'm a french Chinese-cambodian woman I talk Teochew and i received a lot of hate by Chinese people who talk mandarin. They say i talk a fake language , nobody don't know what it is,and i will spend the rest of my life without the possibility of talk Teochew with people in my age 😅 They are right... Only old people talk Teochew...
@FireRupeeАй бұрын
Well, we'll just have to teach more young people then! Then our languages will continue, Teochew included.
@Grille_pain_idiote0Ай бұрын
@@FireRupee I'm 16 years old btw How can I do that
@FireRupeeАй бұрын
@@Grille_pain_idiote0 So, you speak Teochew already, and you learned it from family at home? Can you read and write Teochew, in any of the major writing systems, like Pêng'im, POJ, or Chinese characters? If you can't yet, then that can be a good next step, but even if you only speak it, then that is still really good. So, some ideas: 1) Find others to speak it with, online or in person. 2) Join or form a Teochew association. Some associations focus on holidays and other traditions or events, some teach the language/culture/history/arts, some offer translation services (especially in Chinatowns) or other community services. One person can do a lot, and a group can do even more together. 3) Support the continued use of the language by speakers in their own households and in their communities (parents need to use it with children), even if they don't speak it perfectly; sometimes this means addressing misconceptions or stigmas, like the anti-Teochew bias you've encountered yourself. My parents thought that I would be "confused" if I were raised bilingual, so they intentionally chose to raise me in the dominant language of our area. However, being bilingual is not a source of confusion, but a huge advantage in today's world. None of my peers were "confused", even those who were raised trilingual. Because my parents' generation chose not to raise any of us in our generation in Chinese, only a few of us speak any Chinese, and it's mostly not our own ancestral language, but Mandarin, since that's what was taught at school. 4) Support the teaching of Teochew in heritage schools (E.g. Chinese schools on the weekends, in the evenings, etc), high schools, and universities, where there is a great enough community interest (students and parents asking for the courses to be added). If there isn't a Chinese school near you, then maybe one could be established. Sometimes these heritage schools use spaces made available by religious organizations, or other community centers. 5) If you decide to make content and publish online (e.g. books, music), consider making content in Teochew. If there is a kind of content you search for, but cannot find, then maybe that's something you could make. For example, I couldn't find a dictionary of my specific dialect, so I'm making one myself. 6) Other aspects of Teochew culture (traditions, cuisine, visual arts, performing arts, etc) are also important, and supporting these also supports the community. 7) If teaching Teochew, or running a Teochew association, etc, then be open to anyone who wants to learn, participate, and support, regardless of who they are or what their background is. Maybe this seems obvious, but it has to be said. 8) There are many other language revitalization groups out there now (especially online), and there is a lot which can be learned from them and their efforts, even if they aren't focused on the same language you are. Many different language communities have similar experiences and face similar challenges. This is some of what comes to mind right now, but there is so much more that can be done. Continuing a language is something that one does throughout life, and there are many different ways in which a person can take part, and one person need not do every single possible thing. Maybe some of these are easier or more possible than others, but any thing you do to continue the language and culture is good. I hope this helps. If you have more questions, feel free to ask anything.
