Cosmetologist, certified in trichology here. This is why i always refer people to use professional items referred by a licensed seasoned Cosmetologist, trichologist, or holistic practicing dermatologist who has experience in hair and scalp care. Another friendly reminder that the FDA only requires to put a certain amount of ingredients on labels. Meaning that if theirs a tiny ingredient that has a huge side effect, its not on the label. Also mass production is notoriously known to use generic ingredients, which lead to hair loss. Harsh sulfates and parabans in shampoos can cause major dehydration which can lead to excessive shedding or worse. Lastly, i recommend to use professional lines created by PROS in the hair industry that have their own labs and manufacturing facilities that are heavily supervised. If you want to go the black owned route, INFLUANCE, AND DESIGN ESSENTIALS just to name a couple are excellent to try out. They are og's in the game and haven't failed myself nor my clientele.

Before Mielle partnered with P&G, at the height of its popularity on social media, their rosemary oil was said to have had a poor reaction in some people's hair (head/scalp). Although, rosemary oil is powerful and can be quite irritating. I use some products from Mielle's Pomegranate & Honey line and have used it for about 8 months and I have noticed no unusual shedding or irritation. So it's all fascinating to me. I am hoping Mielle is being honest regarding its product composition.

I’ve others years ago that didn’t work well for me, so I stick to what works. But from what I saw being shared about the Rosemary oil you’re speaking of, it appeared to be non-black women discovering the oil and complaining about it. They eventually released a lighter version of it.

Thnak you for the insitful video. I would like to add though. I was doing some research and I came across a video of someone who is a chemist explaining how to use rosemary oil properly. Rosemary oil is an anti-inflammatory for the scalp, however, it has the potential to grow fungi when left exposed. Same thing goes for rosemary water. The quality of the Rosemary oil also matters for how long it takes for product to grow fungi. Most preservatives can't stop this, especially when it comes to oils. Rosemary oil should be only used once to twice before you wash your hair. What may cause hair loss is dermatitis caused by fungi from using the oil too frequently. Especially if you're only washing your hair every two weeks to a month. Another thing that could have also caused the hair loss like I stated beforehand is a change in the quality of the oil.
@violetrosequast3402 ай бұрын
I would also like to add that people may be protien sensitive and do not realize that every single product in the line contains high amounts of protien. Using only this line if you have low porosity hair may cause your hair to fall out. This line is much better for people who have high/medium prorosity hair (like me!) and even then should be rotated with other products.

No because it was my fault for not doing any prior and accurate research.

I think what people are failing to realize is hair and scalp needs change. So, a product may work for you for a period of time and stop because hair changes, especially as we age. I used Mielle when I transitioned to natural and it worked well until my hair changed. I got it colored. As a result of this, the porosity, etc. changed and the products no longer met my needs so I switched. The issue with this entire situation that I have is there is NO ACCOUNTABILITY on the customer's part. Whose to say these women aren't doing crazy things with their hair..constantly mixing hair products..and not taking proper care of their hair in general. I think many of "us" need to step back and truly analyze the situation instead of blaming Mielle haircare products, especially if YOU HAVE NOT seen a dermatologist.

re: the 2c girlies being the ones to have problems - I think you're very much on to something. as a 2c girlie myself, I grew up in a "wash your hair everyday with Prell" household, so my metric of "how much hair should I see coming out in the shower" was based on only one day's worth of shedding. one of the biggest adjustments of moving to a more curl-friendly routine was the idea of *not* washing your hair every day. (side note: this doesn't work for every curly-haired person and that's okay too! listen to your hair, if it wants to be washed daily, wash it daily. my hair needs to be washed every other day at least.) if these 2c girlies are also newbies to curl-friendly styling, especially the kind started by the type 4 girls where you wash more like 1-2x/wk, then yes they're going to see "more" hair loss because the less frequently you wash, the more shed hairs are backed up to pull out in the shower. they aren't actually shedding more hair, they're just seeing 3-4 days' worth of shedding all at once. and no, brushing/combing *will not* get all of the shed hairs out on their own. the type 2 texture holds oils very differently from the type 4 texture, and you need the grit and grippiness of freshly-washed hair to really be able to get all of the loose hair out. I've combed and pulled out as much hair as I can pre-showering, but there comes a point where your hair is just too oily & slick for the combing to get anything.

I don't have a confirmation bias. I bought this product looking for a good treatment and leave-in, they were horrible. I'm not unwell and it isn't age because my hair had been thriving, even when I had braids because I have learnt how to take care of my hair. I also did my medical executive summary at the end of last year. Prior to using the product, i had some allergy issues. My dermatologist made me do blood tests and a skin biopsy, I was healthy. I drink a lot of water, i eat my veggies and fruits. They need to find out why so many ppl are having issues with their hair. I make my own rosemary tea rinse in the past and I didn't have any issues. I won't be buying from them again.

Mielle responses, especially the past owner/Ceo responses have always been bad. Her prior issue is why she had stepped back and they were supposed to have PR in place. Honestly with some of these hair brand issues I am kind of on more of a user issue, failure to fully research products, possible health issues, etc. There are so many brands and products out there and a lot of ppl just use what is the new craze or whatever and completely ignore signs if products are even a good use for them. Could it be the product, possibly, but it could also be hundreds of other things. When I bought a new jar it said “new look same formula”. I checked the old jar to the new jar, there was ONE new ingredient and the order of some ingredients changed slightly. My hair said “Nope, take it back” 😂 they changed back to the original. As weird as it might seem, the ratio of ingredients really do matter, even 1 change can cause havoc! 😵💫 Always keep a pic of the old container list of ingredients/look to reference.

I think the main issue with Miele and other natural hair products is that it’s user error and it’s not the users fault totally. The natural Hair community has been convinced that we need to leave our hair wet and put a bunch of oils and things on the scalp to make it grow and that combination is probably why peoples hair is falling out in the first place. People do not need extra oil on their scalp because adding more oil to the scalps microbiome creates buildup and bacteria that actually contributes to hair loss. When it comes to the rosemary oil, rosemary oil wipes away all the good or bad bacteria on your scalp. If you had a mild scalp infection, then you would want to use those drops for a week or so until things get better, but the fact that people are claiming that that grows hair when in reality all it is doing is messing up the scalps healthy soil for hair to grow. I blame the natural hair community and companies like mielle for totally miseducating folks about basic hair science so that we. As black Women can continue to be a pay day for them. The market was oversaturated with a bunch of products and things we didn’t need and now it’s creating more problems than solutions.

The hair and skin care industry has never focused on the unique needs of the black community! and when these brands sell to companies that have never catered to us... It's heart braking. With that said.. It is their choice to decide to continue being a business owner or wanting to grow and possibly sacrificing the quality and ingredients that work best for our hair. It is "Our" responsibility as consumers, to learn how to read labels, to question ingredients in our products, and to stop use if it doesn't work for "you". I had a reaction to their Mint Almond oil, not on my hair or scalp, but my sinuses. Years later, for a different reason, I found out that I have a minor almond allergy. I’ve also noticed at different points people have tried to discredit this brand as well as others for whatever reason, and others online seize the opportunity to dogpile in these situations. Another thing I noticed recently was that they were selling a lighter strength version of their Rosemary Mint oil that went viral on tiktok amongst non-black communities, who in turn complained about hair loss from the same oil. I thought it was only the oil everyone was complaining about.

It was the Rosemary line as a whole, the oil and the line

It was wen hair care products that was accused of making woman hair fall out not ouia.
@Shanygne2 ай бұрын
Wen was not only accused they settled their class action lawsuit in 2016. Ouai was accused of causing hair loss late 2023/early 2024. Multiple hair brands have been accused of it.

Mielle products have always dried out my hair so I don't use the products. I don't know why someone would continue to use a product that has any negative effect. But I also understand the frustration, however I'm always of the mind that it's a me problem instead of they problem because my hair is finicky and likes certain things.

READ the ingredients, talk to a professional about YOUR hair needs. Do YOUR homework & don't jump in just because it's a B.O.B... it's good to support, but do what works for YOU ✌🏾

Listen…. I PROMISE that Pomegranate line made my hair fall out!!!!! I used it for yearssssss and never had a problem. Then, all of a sudden, when I tell you my hair started SHEDDING like no bodies business. Just clumps and clumps of hair falling out every wash day. Also, the leave in that used to have my hair moisturized and thriving, suddenly had my hair feeling like STRAW and clumped up the very next day after wash day. I stopped using the leave in, and suddenly my hair is FINE. I know many of yall believe that this is all cap, but I’m a regular smegular chick, no social media presence what so ever, not looking for ANY clout….. but I’m here to tell you that leave in CHANGED. Like I said, I used it for YEARS…. Then all of a sudden… my hair is tore up!!!!!

Eh idk if a beauty chemist is the best professional to listen to. Maybe a dermatologist?
@Shanygne2 ай бұрын
Lol I’d say a beauty chemist is someone worth listening to when one of the main concerns is the product’s ingredients. I’ve yet to see any dermatologist speak but agree ppl should seek one out to see what’s going on.
@fruitmonsterfly12 ай бұрын
They are the best people to listen to bc they’re the ones who actually make the products and research the ingredients and how they affect the body.
@kmoney10072 ай бұрын
definitely validity hearing out to a cosmetic chemist who is not actively pushing product. he oftentimes talks about how we can do better. but for our actual day to day issues people should seek a derm they can afford.
@TheSomethingnew12 ай бұрын
In order for a dermatologist to speak, someone would have to be willing to have their scalp evaluated. The beauty chemist judges the product and ingredients.

I'm getting 2020 flashbacks. No accountability for anything. EVERYONE doesn't have the same problem. So glad I stopped supporting this brand. Good luck to them going forward.

I was gifted a Mielle gift set and I also bought the rosemary oil. I'm going to pay extra attention to if my hair gets messed up (I haven't been consistent with using the oil -I'm a little scared to use it moving forward)

Thanks for this update cause I've been wondering. Cause I use some mielle products and got very concerned!! Even though nothing has changed with my hair so far.

We’ll pay attention chile, if anything starts seeming off stop using immediately lol

@@Shanygne I agree! All this news has made me cautious but I've been using these products for years and thankfully haven't had any issues!!! It makes me wonder if I should switch my routine just in case...
