Shaolin Kempo - Abandon your technique!

Shaolin kempo Karate teaches 108 self defense combinations agains punches, Animal techniques of at least five different animals (tactics) of Tiger, Leopard, Crane, Snake, Dragon and Monkey as well as a myriad of grab and weapons defense techniques. The point is to learn self defense through the techniques and forms, while not being limited to them. So, who cares if you could not finish you combination # 3, #43 or # 98! Did you get home safely? If yes, then your training served you well. Executing your technique or combination perfectly will end the attack beautifully. Fights are dynamic, fluid and rarely show up under ideal circumstances unless they are consensual and planned out…i.e. sport. Getting attacked unexpectedly is not the ideal. Surviving that, getting home safe is the goal. If your technique comes out perfectly in these times, EXCELLENT! If the attacker structures unexpectedly, they shift or punch in a way that “interferes” with your technique, flow into something else. Abandon your technique in the moment! 🙂 You still need to know them, execute them under pressure and understand them to grade, though 😉

“Abandon your technique, this is your best Kempo” is the first and only honest thing I’ve heard from anyone in Shaolin Self Defense Centers. I have a lot of history and experience with Shaolin Self Defense Centers and every one comes with a bunch of liars, abusers and insecure bullies. I like to see that this guy seems different!!!

Yes, it wasn’t good for many years but staying true to myself, years later, a former student of mine reached out after many years. We reconnected and he, himself is a Sensei.
