Your strikes should be aimed at your opponent and not at his bo staff. Same goes for sword training. Otherwise, there's nothing "real" about this. Try it. You'll see how effective your defense is when you're actually trying to hit each other (not with full power or speed, at first, but with real intent. Be safe :)

I would like to point out that when you slam with a staff another staff to the ground you invariantly open your gut to a good blow. While he is pushing to go down, you can release before you hit, he will continue to go down to the ground but your release was straight to his gut or groin if you're nasty.

for this to work the way it is supposed to you would need to add a lot of force to the hit because depending on the type of fight your opponent will be really aggressive and he will try to hit hard so you would need to also be aggressive (or at least really strong) to block and dodge his hits

2:31 Dewcapitate? With a staff? Also, from that position, you are wide open against a downward thrust, so it´s not very likely that he wold do a wide side strike with a crossing step. Also in 2:41, if he was just going for 1 leg, it´s much better to just raise that one leg, then you´d have a foot on the ground and could inmediately counterattack.

I also understand that hindsight is 2020 and studying the video you have all the time in the world to think about how you would react. The thing is they are moving so slow and this is a routine they practice and that is why it is wrong. You should be practicing something that is more practical because nobody is going to try and wind up for another swing after they down his bow staff like that they're going to come straight with a back strike

Jake, you are in good shape and obviously a gifted athlete, but your martial arts is lacking basic fundamental principles. You add movement where there does not need to be any, you look down all the time, you have an anterior pelvic tilt , your arms are always at an obtuse angle rather than a 90 right angle, you make all these sound effects like SKT and have developed bad habits from him, DS and SHS. You need to remove their bad habits from your practice and study from someone that knows what they are doing. Many people have attempted to reach out to you , I do not understand why you can not be humble and learn from them. Many people that do not know will say how great you are and that is fine, but you are misinforming them. Sincerely.

Sure. But when exactly would you actually have a "real" bo staff fight in real life. 99.999% of martial arts is basically dance classes for men. Practical self-defense skills are basically a) don't get into violent confrontations, b) situational awareness, and c) sprinting. For the handful of people in professions that require real physical confrontation skills, a gun beats all other methods, and for less lethal methods, a taser or some pepper spray beats all martial arts methods. If you are a bouncer or a cop, it could be useful to know a couple jiu jitsu moves, but for the ordinary person, it's really about avoiding violence. Everything involving a staff is just for fun.

+Duff McDuffee Your argument about the practicality of these techniques is completely wrong. Anytime an individual gets into a fight, he has the opportunity to use these techniques. Then the attacker pushes actually knocks the stick to the ground and is about to "take his head off" (fight over), but instead of swinging the stick to the open face, he swings past it to let the guard come back up and hit. hrm.

Thank you. Didn't have to write it myself. Ecenomy of motion. The idea of fighting is not to give your opponent time to guard. Quite the contrary. It's sad that the origin of kung fu is so forgotten.
@RaineAlgessar

igor caique You learn what you train. If you teach yourself improper technique, you will have improper technique. If it is a demonstration of how you fight with a staff, it should show that. Not how you twirl a staff around pretending to fight. Then that is showmanship, and not fighting. This is showmanship. Certainly not real fighting. In any way, shape or form. For comparison, if I as a member of the SCA would have a demonstration, I would aim to hit my opponent. If he doesn't guard, he'll get hit. That demonstrates that the technique works. If he guards, it shows that the guard works. Risk of injury is simply solved by putting on a damned helmet.
@eschelar
@eschelar 9 жыл бұрын
RaineAlgessar Absolutely. +igor caique Training is *training*. It's practicing the movement set. No sense in practicing something that leaves you *VERY* vulnerable and calling it a martial arts routine. It's maybe suitable for really, really bad TV shows, but I'm no expert, and even I can see it's truly horrible form.
@RaineAlgessar
@RaineAlgessar 9 жыл бұрын
The problem is usually that a real fight is too fast to be exciting for most people, since they can't follow what is happening. Show-fighting in movies and such exaggerates movement to make it clear what is happening. Issues with this video is that they are not training to actually hit their opponent, and are doing waaay too wide movements. Just like in kung fu movies. They are exposed in a trillion ways and the moves are easily countered by someone who actually knows how to fight with a weapon. It's rubbish, and a scam since they are selling DVDs claiming it to be efficient martial arts.

RaineAlgessar proper... improper.. It doesn't matter.. If it works, it works.. And dude, i am sure this guy is fast... But my money would not be on him on a real bo staff fight.. I learned the basics from him...but fighting.. No.. I did not learn fighting from him.. Fighting you learn by just practicing alone.. By yourself.. Becoming one with the staff.. When you fight, movements come naturally. Not methodically.

No one would smack staves in the middle in a real fight. The whole point of a fight is to attack your opponent and win the fight, swinging at some arbitrary point in space only to contact the enemy's bo is pointless. Every single time you guys do that, imagine if the other guy didn't have the bo to "block," what would happen? The swing would just fly over his head and miss him completely, because you weren't aiming at anything to begin with!

Look into what is called "binden" in historical European martial arts. It involves striking a blow to claim the center space between the fighters. If your opponent does not contest this by a similar strike, you can then effortlessly flow into a thrust and finish him. I believe that is what we see vestiges of in this video. Unfortunately, it is obscured by the rest of the performance being so appallingly poor. Check out the youtube channel "Dimicator" for more on this.

Here's a Message to All My KZbin "HATERS" Out There Who Like To Spam My KZbin Videos with Negative Hateful Comments: "We're uploading great, fun, traditional, effective content that's purpose is to keep Traditional Chinese Martial Arts alive since Traditional Chinese Martial are currently dying! I have NEVER once advertised any of my videos! We have NEVER sponsored or put money toward any of our KZbin videos. All our views, subscribers, and followers have found us organically on their own and our analytics say we have a 20 "Like" to 1 "Dislike" ratio! That's pretty good in my opinion! That means for every 2,000 people who watch our videos and hit "LIKE" only about 100 hit "DISLIKE". :) We get over 50,000 video views a Day and add 300 New Subscribers everyday! We get TENS OF THOUSANDS of comments everyday on our videos and lessons here on KZbin! There is NO WAY I can read or respond to them all. I reserve about 1 hour each day to answer KZbin comments and I try to get to as many as I can! My wife Pam answers a couple hundred emails everyday from people who email us at www.JakeMace.com. If you want to post your own videos about me on your channel then DO IT! I LOVE IT! If they're positive then that's great! If they're negative then that's great too! Live your life! +Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace "Great" and "Fun" are objective, and many would disagree. "Traditional" in what sense? Sin Kwan Thé was a fraud, and you will not post your lineage, so what claim do you have there? "Keep Traditional Chinese Martial Arts alive" - They are alive, and you aren't helping by presenting it in a bad light. Nobody cares about your funding, stop trying to control and divert the conversation away from the problem that people actually have with you: That you are being deliberately misleading, and employing bad practice. Lastly, you seem to be unable to respond directly to any "haters" but have plenty of time to respond to the fans, even though the "haters" seem to be the most "Liked" comments, and therefore the first that you would logically see unless you actively avoid them. Fraud?

There are actual trained professionals that would say all this is bullshit and train you how to defend yourself the proper way with a bo staff and what they are doing is good for sparring and that's about it and all sparring really is is just a warm up to use said weapon or to practice a certain technique
@David-bl2si
@David-bl2si 4 жыл бұрын
ItsJennifer This is not real. Any trained professional could tell you this is choreographed and train you in a real fight. This is a pathetic display with shit tons of wasted movements and so much exposure for the opponent, that cannot easily be covered due to the positioning they are using. I’ve never trained in any sort of martial art, and if this man was using the technique he was in this video, I guarantee I could beat his ass within a matter of seconds because this is clearly fake.

"Real fight" aside...I knew better. lol. I've seen some of your other stuff and I know you're pretty good with that thing. My questions/criticisms are practical in nature. In the form, the two high, power strikes didn't appear to be targeted at anything other than each others staffs. So if one of the staffs failed to come up, the other would hit nothing but air. My other issue is towards the end when your staff was pinned. Why would the aggressor choose to release your staff and come all the way around to strike from the other direction when he could just simply come straight up into your face from that position?
@laotzu9222
@laotzu9222 8 жыл бұрын
what kind of wu shu shit is this??? lol first and foremost the minute you two crossed staves the first time, me as the aggressor would have rolled my staff around yours and smacked you in the face....secondly, when your staff got snapped down to the ground, while your opponents leading leg was opened and exposed sweep your staff forward right into the shin. not to mention all that added movement and spins...waste of energy, be efficient be precise. ..strike hard, strike fast....sit there doing spins and twirls like a cheerleader and I'm going to wait for that gap an hit you....c'mon guys if you're gonna teach people, teach them right

+harly quin and you'll also note harly that is says in the title "real fight" now please explain why beginners would be even light sparring with staves? and also how any of the moves and positioning would benefit a person in an actual fight...in a movie perhaps, where everything is scripted and choreographed. ..but not a fight where your opponent seeks to win
@harlequin3771
@harlequin3771 7 жыл бұрын
that "wu shu" shit has been proven to work. not just because you cant grasp the concept of cumulative skill doesn't mean its bullshit. again, it is for beginners. your not supposed to do that exact thing in a fight your supposed to use the individual parts of it and sparing over time strengthens you in doing those manuvers. once again you clearly don't understand how technique works. do soccer players do ball tricks in the middle of a game? hell no. but learning them helps them to improve. let me know if u get what Im saying.

+harly quin harly...i mastered the staff long ago, so i do understand the point you are trying to make...but do you understand mine? teaching weapons combat isn't about show, flash or style...it's about efficiency, economic movement, precision...and just a touch of brutal thinking. ...if facing an opponent armed also with a staff, where would you strike for first dear one??? if the answer isn't for the hands holding the staff then you aren't thinking it though the right way....my point is if you want to teach beginners how to fight, teach them right

These are great. Your videos are quite timely for my current project-in-the-works... I know my icon there is me as a Klingon, but lately I've been looking into working a Darth Maul Cyborg (Star Wars: Clone Wars) cosplay, with digitigrade legs (look that all up, you'll see) and creating the Staffsaber (it's a bit different from SWep1). I've talked with a friend who wishes to do a different Sith (Darth Talon) and she and I will work out a show routine, using many of the techniques and maneuvers you've shown here. It will take a few months (both to finish the outfit and practice the routine) But I'll try to take video and post it on my channel, then link it to yours ('course with credit for the inspiration). Thank you for your hard work Keep up the good works, Sir.
