Shaper sheet material is very easy to use for a variety of model layout applications. I wish Kim had started by describing what shaper sheet is made of and why that layering adds to the usability of the material. I'm using it to build a stream valley and the ability to create polls and riffles by altering the stream bed profile is an added feature of this material. Try it.

This stuff looks pretty cool, and I've been looking for something like it for a long time. There used to be a similar product (years ago) that instead of foil used a chicken wire mesh between two layers of some sort of paper material that was great for making contours quickly. It was not cheap, but made life easier. This looks like an improvement on that product in that it looks like the surface materials will adhere better to the "top" side of the shaper sheet. I've got a couple areas on my layout where I'm definitely going to try it -- and also on some portable layouts.

Thanks for sharing. Can this be used for forming a Sand dune for Wright Brothers' Flyer 1/39 scale Anniversary kit. Diorama for Bi-plane as it's about to take off. Appreciate any recommendations/tips
@ModelSceneryExpert8 ай бұрын
For creating a sand dune, Shaper Sheet will work well to form the base shape of the dune. You can use Shaper Sheet Plaster to lock the shape of the Shaper Sheet into place. To get the coloration of the sand dune, you can try appling Mold-A-Scene Plaster over the Shaper Sheet Plaster. Be sure to wet the Shaper Sheet Plaster before applying the Mold-A-Scene, or it might absorb all of the moisture and prevent the Mold-A-Scene from curing properly. You can also apply the wet Mold-A-Scene to Shaper Sheet Plaster while it is drying to partially mix them together. We recommend mixing a few small batches to test a few different ways of applying Mold-A-Scene over Shaper Sheet and find what works best for you. Fine Ballast and Fine Talus can also be applied on top of the Shaper Sheet Plaster and Mold-A-Scene to create the sand dune. We hope this helps!

I already bought casting plaster for making rocks could i use casting plaster on the plaster sheet instead of shaper sheet plaster?
@ModelSceneryExpert9 жыл бұрын
wrllovemen Hello! Shaper Sheet will bond with ANY type of plaster material. So, yes, you can use the casting plaster, which I am assuming is Lightweight Hydrocal, which is used for casting rocks. The Lightweight Hydrocal will be just a bit softer than the Shaper Sheet Plaster, but will still create a permanent, hard shell you can then color with pigment and landscape. Shaper Sheet Plaster also has an extended working time, so since the Lightweight Hydrocal will set faster, you will want to mix smaller batches when applying it to the Shaper Sheet, so it will not prematurely set up in your bowl. Hope this helps!

How do you adhere the shaper sheet to another surface such as wood or canvas? Hot glue or super glue? Love these videos!
@ModelSceneryExpert6 жыл бұрын
We recommend the following for wood surfaces. We do not have any specific information for canvas, but this method should work for that as well depending on the material. A quick and easy method is to use our Low Temp Foam Glue. The bond between the glue and the foil backing on the Shaper Sheet is not overly durable, but they will adhere together well enough. After Shaper Sheet Plaster has been applied tot he Shaper Sheet, it will be firmly locked in place. If the bond between the foil backing and the Low Temp Foam Glue is a concern, sand the foil lightly with fine-grade sandpaper to give it some tooth before applying the glue.

Can you make a mountain with a flat top so that a scale model building can be mounted on the top?
@ModelSceneryExpert4 жыл бұрын
You can form the Shaper Sheet that way. Once Shaper Sheet Plaster is applied to the Shaper Sheet, it becomes quite firm. It will bear the weight of a building. However, if the weight is particularly substantial, we recommend putting a couple foam supports beneath the center of the plateau for extra support.

Shaper Sheet Plaster was specifically designed to work with Shaper Sheet. We have not tested Sculptamold and cannot give any comment to whether it would work or not. Hello. what glue do I use to glue the shapa sheet to a cork base please? doI use a glue gun or your white white foam glue please?
@ModelSceneryExpert4 жыл бұрын
You can use a glue gun or Foam Tack Glue to attach Shaper Sheet to cork. As the Shaper Sheet foil is very smooth, it needs a little tooth to encourage adhesion. Use 80 or 150-grit sandpaper to roughen the shaper foil before applying the glue. If using Foam Tack Glue, we recommend using the contact adhesion method for the best results. Apply Foam Tack Glue to both the cork and the roughened shaper foil. Let dry until clear and tacky (maximum working time is 1 hour) then press the shaper foil to the cork. The glue will bond instantly.

I am very interested in using this item I have already brought a small roll of shaper sheet in preparation to do the smaller scenery sections on my layout, but I am interested in getting the bigger sized sheet to do the bigger sections. One thing I would like to know is would shaper sheet hold the weight of resin buildings when the plaster has set? Also would you advise using hot glue from a hot glue gun to bond the sheet to layout base board?
@ModelSceneryExpert4 жыл бұрын
When Shaper Sheet is coated with Shaper Sheet Plaster, it creates a hard terrain shell that can bear the weight of resin buildings. You can use hot glue to fix the Shaper Sheet to a wood base, but you will need to sand the shaper foil side of the piece and the layout base so the hot glue will have some tooth to grab onto. You can also use Foam Tack Glue to attach the Shaper Sheet to the layout base. We recommend using Foam Tack Glue if the Shaper Sheet will be attached vertically for a stronger bond. When using Foam Tack Glue, be sure to sand both surfaces (shaper foil and layout base), as well, to encourage adhesion.

I have a custom mountain covered with plaster cloth. I tried using Shaper Sheet plaster to cover the plaster cloth since it has a longer working time than Hydrocal. However, the color is yellowish whereas Hydrocal is white. So I’m having to use Hydrocal with its limited working time. Did I get a bad batch of Shaper Sheet plaster or is that color normal? Thanks.
@ModelSceneryExpert3 жыл бұрын
Shaper Sheet Plaster is more of a cream color because it is more dense than Lightweight Hydrocal. The cream color will fade a bit once it is completely dry. However, it will not dry to a very bright white like Lightweight Hydrocal. The difference may look drastic right now, but when all the plaster is colored and landscaping materials are added, it will likely be unnoticeable.
@richardwoolley27453 жыл бұрын
@@ModelSceneryExpert Currently I’m trying to find the right color for my mountain top (plaster cloth covered with Hydrocal plaster) and other peaks. They won’t have foliage on them so the color will be “naked”. Can you suggest earth color combinations for a granite color for my peaks? I’ve looked at Grand Tetons and Kenai in Alaska. I’ve tried white at 16:1 combined with a few dabs of slate grey, but it turns out too grey. I’ve also used that with a few dabs of burnt umber to add a bit of brown and red. I like that but it’s still not “right”. Note that I’m happy with a white with dabs of stone grey for my lower elevations (turns out a nice light green). Any suggestions will be appreciated!

It sounds like you are heading in the right direction with your colors. We would suggest that you mix several spray bottles with different pigments from our Earth Colors Liquid Pigments and use them in layers. Spray in layers starting with the lighter colors first and letting them dry some before adding the next layer. Allow the previous layer to show through and even blotting with paper towels or sponge if necessary. The colors we suggest are; Stone Gray, Slate Gray, Concrete, Raw Umber, and Burnt Umber.

What about light weight Hydrocal.. is there a difference between that and shaper sheet plaster? I also was unable to get the sticky side exposed on my shaper sheet. Not sure why it's really stuck on there.
@ModelSceneryExpert5 жыл бұрын
Any of our plaster-based products will work with Shaper Sheet to create a hard shell but deliver varying degrees of hardness. You can view a reference plaster chart on our website for details. We recommend Shaper Sheet Plaster (C1180) because it has an extended working time and hardness factor. The extended time allows you more time to apply the plaster. Typical plaster working time is around 5 minutes, while Shaper Sheet Plaster has approximately 20 minutes. The Shaper Sheet should not be difficult to separate, but, occasionally, there can be stubborn pieces. Try taking something with a hard, flat edge and placing it at the corner on the foil side. Pull it backwards from the corner, putting pressure as you're doing so. This can help get the Shaper Sheet to fold back when it is harder to do so. If this still does not work, contact our Sales and Customer Service at 1-573-346-5555 for further assistance. You can also follow the link woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/information/ContactUs to send an email.

Is it possible to ad rocks to shaper sheet?
@ModelSceneryExpert7 жыл бұрын
Hello! Yes, it is possible! There are two ways to add rocks to Shaper Sheet. The first option is the Plaster Cloth method. Test fit the rock castings on your layout. You may need to cut into the Plaster Cloth terrain with a hobby knife in order for rocks to fit nicely. Soak rock in water for 10 seconds and wet the area where the rock will be placed. Wad a strip of wet Plaster Cloth and place on the backside of the rock, then press in place. Hold until setting begins. Apply wet Plaster Cloth strips around edges of rock to hide gaps. Poke and smooth wet with your fintertips. The other method you can use is to attach the rock to the Shaper Sheet with an extra amount of Shaper Sheet Plaster. The rock needs to be wet. Soak the rock in water for at least one minute, and brush on Shaper Sheet Plaster to the area on the Shaper Sheet where you want the rock. Press the rock into place and adjust as desired. It is best to plan where Rocks will go ahead of time. (If you don't plan ahead, you may have to make cuts in the Shaper Sheet or add extra plaster and that will take longer.)I hope that helps! Happy modeling!

Good video, at least it would be without that way too loud 'background' music.

Idk why in videos when people are giving verbal instructions that they put any music during talking. Lot do it unfortunately. Distracting. I like the video a lot aside from that.

You guys ever try ornamental flower foam to build the terrain ? I do this to copy geologic terrain that people are familiar with and then cover with plaster . This adds additional hardness and keeps kids fingers from pushing the material. Similar to how they always like to poke holes in meat wrapped with plastic at the supermarket.
