7:40 actually there is a better way to do that, just go to edit mode, select the whole thing *A* and then press *SHIFT+N* that recalculate the normals and tells blender what direction are the vertices supposes to be facing, ie the direction in which the solidify will thicken the mesh

Some notes: - you could just use the Edit mode mirror options (top right corner of 3D view) to slide the handle planes at 04:25 - 8:13 seems like a bug to me. The solidifies are interacting, even though the vertex group is supposed to isolate the effect. (EDIT: so I have learned that this is not a bug but the way the design is. The vertex group DOES NOT control which areas get affected by the modifier but rather how MUCH that area is affected. This obviously leads to issues then with the next solidify because the plane has already been turned into a box in the last one with just no thickness. It seems to be a weight map of sorts, but since it can only select one vertex group the overall design seems really janky imo. Out of the Generative modifiers Solidify and Wireframe seem to use this odd approach (And have the factor slider) while Bevel, Decimate and Weld truly limit the effect of the modifier to the vertex group.) - You can use ctrl-m "mirror" in edit mode to flip the bolt. You'll need to set the 3D cursor in the middle of the flip, though, and set the transform orientation to 3D cursor.

Derek Elliott I always think of it as "i” for “insert” keyframe, if that helps at all 😄 There's also the little circle button on the timeline which is "auto keyframe" - this creates keyframes for you automatically after you make any transformations. Ps that solidify thing looks like a bug. If you check normals in overlay settings. I see the grip get 2 sets of normals even while the vertex group is applied. That should not happen if im correct
@RomboutVersluijs4 жыл бұрын
DId a recheck on the manual and it kinda contradicts itself. It does state that using vertexgroups and factor of zero creates double vertices. (not really handy!!!) BUt it also states in the invert options, Only inverted get solidify effect. I always thought verts outside the group were not affected at all. Thats why its going wonky! I filed a report, but i dont think they'll change it. Even though its kinda weird it makes double vertices, thats never good outcome docs.blender.org/manual/en/2.82/modeling/modifiers/generate/solidify.html#bpy-types-solidifymodifier So in this case its better to use just one and set the main thickness higher, that way the other part gets less influence. You wont have double vertices this way. FOr a plastic handle it doesnt matter. But if you use glass you run into issue. You would need to apply everything and clean it up
@RomboutVersluijs4 жыл бұрын
If you move the solidify to the bottom the rim will keep flat. You can also adjust it a bit with the crease slider for the rim
@cocamaster04 жыл бұрын
@@RomboutVersluijs it's a shame that they wouldn't consider this faulty behaviour a bug. I also reported it, but they closed it as duplicate. Then I saw your report and laughed when I saw the pan, a tutorial comes up then everyone has the same issue, and it's not the tutorials fault. Even the manual is wrong. No artist would ever expect or desire this duplicating behaviour with solidify modifier. The workaround right now is putting a weld modifier right after the solidify, until they update and fix it.
@RomboutVersluijs4 жыл бұрын
@@cocamaster0 yeah I also stated the manual and that it actually contradicts itself. They do like the idea as well they said. I'm gonna file it right-click select. Never knew it did this. It's actually produces faulty meshes, how is that not a bug? No it doesn't crash bit makes bad meshes
@RomboutVersluijs4 жыл бұрын
@@cocamaster0 I tried the weld but that doesn't seem to fix it. Only a merge would do it as fas as I know. Perhaps I need to test the weld again
