I love this concept in the game, because I feel like a lot of people could do this from scratch if they tried, while real-world programming can be quite difficult due to the level of abstraction required. I was rather surprised how easy it was to make. Definitely worth staring to make components of before you're even done with the main part of the game.

This is awesome! I reproduced this and it worked like a charm. I enhanced it so that the section that handles layers 3 and 4 will make a separate line of 2 layer shapes instead of not producing anything if the shape being requested only has 2 layers. I have buttons that allow me to switch from producing the hub requested shape to one of the upgrade shapes if I want to increase production of one for a while. I had to tweak the logic of the final merger in this case so it would know to bypass the shape instead of attempting to merge with the result of the output from the layer 3/4 merger.

Thank you so much for this explanation. I started copying the parts and wire layers, not sure I understood how it would connect and work together. Once I actually started mapping the belts and looking for which wire groups to connect, it all made sense. This was far easier to use than it first appeared. This was so much fun to make and watch run wild!

Thank you so much not only for making this video but for really explaining why each thing is where it is and how it works. Thanks to your video, I not only have a fantastic machine, I have some understanding of it and ability to troubleshoot issues with it and figure out where I've crossed the wires, so to speak. I think Tobias ought to link to this video when you unlock freeplay because this is fairly intensive and a far better explanation than any of the other tutorials provided in game.

I just finished building this machine. It's awesome and at last works perfectly. As you said, cut and paste made it much easier. I took some time to find errors after startup such as backwards lanes or bad wiring here and there ( that was the most fun part for me). I think few of us could get a working copy going without learning how each module and wiring works but then again, that's the fun part. I really loved this game, but I feel its over for me now. I know I could build my own from the things I learned here, but it couldn't be better and I'm way too lazy. Thanks for the GREAT fun you gave a 76 1/2 yo "girl" gamer (since Zork). I made some minor adjustments to the painter module of the machine that greatly improves response time of the machine. Added more filters. a filter pointing into each of the painters, hooked up to the color signal from the analyzer. As such, any unwanted paint color that entered the machine will get tossed. Only time you get the incorrect color is when the paint is already inside the painter before the change over. Another set of filters for the shape entering the painters, hooked up to the shape signal from the analyzer. It'll throw away no longer needed shapes before it entering the machine hopefully. only the shapes that already made it past the filter will continue to get colored. The response time is significantly improved as a result. Though it means wire management becomes harder.

@deathsheir2035

I am currently working on improving the stackers, however, that module is more compact, leaving very little room for more filters. As such this left putting filters before the module itself, that uses the signal from the virtual painter (all the way back at the cutters), to throw away as many of the unwanted shapes before it enters the module. Response time improvement is insignificant, and not worth the wire management.
@deathsheir2035
@deathsheir2035 3 жыл бұрын
@@JoMomma1973 you get about 1-2 second faster response, so I may have over exaggerated the significance of the response time improvement. On another note: having done some experimenting, I learned of a neat trick that sends "0" on the line, rather than a "no signal" which I then use, to allow more filters to be added, this time at the entrance of each stacking module, in an attempt to reduce the number of junk shapes in the machine. Further response improvement of 1-5 seconds, depending on the number of shapes caught in the stackers when the Hub changes to a different shape. Here are some screenshots: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2452394684 steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2452394684 steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2452408420

doing more work, I started alternating the color of the output wire from those logic circuits, to help compress the footprint of the wires. On top of that, I removed all storage buildings from the machine, as the filters now perform the job the storage buildings did, further reducing overall footprint.
@deathsheir2035
@deathsheir2035 3 жыл бұрын
The only thing left for me to do with improving response time, is shrinking the footprint of the entire machine. With the wires alternating in color, the possibility for all modules to be closer to one another is now possible. The only thing keeping me from reducing the overall footprint further, is the amount of work it'll be to re-route all the color belts, to the new location, so much work required... XD

Hi, I found a way to "accelerate" the shapez' transfers from a factory to the base building... Instead of using the conveyor to transfer shapez, you can use the storage building to make a superspeed conveyor. ! It's more than 2x faster ! So your factory don't need to be as close of the base building ! I made a "make everything machine" too, I'm at my 4th version of it... My 1st version was before the wires update, it was a matrix of 7x16 selectors for colors and 16x16 selectors for every quarter of shapez, and at each new shapez to build, I was deleting small segments of conveyors in that matrix, and placing new ones to select the good quarter of shapez and colors for each. After the wires update, I updated this matrix first by making it fully automated. Then I 've optimized it to be able to output 2 conveyors at maximum rate. But this factory was big and the game was slowing down when I tried to copy / paste this factory to have a second one... So I modified it to have only a 4x16 matrix for shapez, by using the 4-cutter and rotators to make each single quarter of the shpaez to build. And this time, I was able to make a second identical factory, so now, I have 4 conveyors that can reach the maximum rate within minutes.

Nice machine. I wish I had built mine closer to the hub, because it often takes longer to get the parts to the hub than it does to make the required part. Your next step will be to build an automatic buffer system because soon the hub requires 17+ / s delivery. A single input is enough, but you have to stagger the release into multiple belts. it's pretty easy to do. my next step is to rebuild the machine so its a little closer and maybe a bit more compact. I am also thinking of trying to make it a double line of the finished product.
@JoMomma1973
@JoMomma1973 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! In fact, one of the reasons for the "augmentation circuit" I mention in the beginning is that a buffer system is needed in the future. That's the reason for the 16 storage containers on the inputs to the hub. Looking forward to making it work!

I somehow watched some of your other video this one and a dogadayboy video on smart machines and actually made a machine that works. Its Basically 16 smart color mixers next to 16 quad-cutter arrays. 16 different signals split between shape and color. The machines are 4 different versions that rotate the shape straight out of the cutter based on which machine it is. It then gets colored and after that no more wires, just a pyramid of stacking machines with overflow on each one.

there is an issue that this setup doesn't address: when there are two layers which don't share the same quadrants, stackers will put them in the same layer. That is not desired in the current end-game shapes, as sometimes you want a sole quadrant stacked on top/bottom of another layer that doesn't have that quadrant in the shape. Its really tricky to figure out how to do that even manually, so figuring out how to do it automatically is really hard.

The framerate makes the blets look like they are going backward. Unrelated, These videos have been the most helpful in my journey toward making an MAM. I haven't done it yet, but I intend to do it. I thought I had a good idea of the logic, but for some reason the experiments that I did were unproductive. I think the biggest breakthrough for me was the use of filters to turn things on or off, as well as the logic to choose to bypass painting when the shape is gray.

My first MAM uses a quad painter. It works, but a much better approach is to select a full shape and color for each quadrant, pre-paint the shape using a double painter, then break it into 4 quadrants. Thus you get 8 painted quadrants for each 2 input shapes and each 1 input paint, and so need a lot fewer mixers and painters.

@JoMomma1973

what I mean is that when the shape changes, the correct items (e.g. red paint) becomes the wrong items and the overflow gates get rid of a lot of the build-up. And yes, it could be just as quick to mix the paint at the painter, and that may be one more approach to the problem. But for simplicity, I am keeping the mixers away from the lanes to keep both the wire and belt spaghettis to a minimum

@@JoMomma1973 I'd suggest a mod which would make the machine even bigger. First off, virtual cut the shape in two halves. Then, virtual stack each half with a 4-tall stack of squares on the now-empty half. You can also make that half shape-agnostic, as we will trash it. You then actually build these combos. That stack prevents layers from falling into each other. Finally cut and discard, then merge the halves.

@24:57: you says "the shape of lane one is controling the lane 2.", but you can simply your 3 OR gates with only one: Use signal "lane1 OR lane2", and control both lane 1 and 2 with that singal instead. explanations: if lane 2 is empty, you can use bypass for both lane 1 (and lane 2). as well if lane 1 is empty you can also use bypass for both (lane 1 and) lane 2. So it does not matter you use bypass on empty lanes, because, hey it's empty :) all your 3 gates can be reduced to a one gate, make things more simplier. And also cascading...
@deathsheir2035
@deathsheir2035 3 жыл бұрын
The filters are set up so that a 1 sends the shape into the stacker. So you want the resulting output to be 0 when 1 or both lanes are not in use, but the output to be 1 when both lanes are in use. That is where an AND Gate comes into play. An AND Gate only sends a "1" when both inputs are anything above 0, and not a "no signal." What the AND Gate does, is says "WHEN: Lane 1 AND Lane 2 are in use, send to stacker. When only one lane is in use, or neither lane is in use, send to bypass." I have recently gone through and replaced all OR gates with AND gates, and redid my wire management to fit it in. Made things look a lot cleaner. As soon as I can (having problems right now for some reason) I'll upload a screenshot of my wires layer to show how the AND Gate is incorporated into the machine. Note: Unless you have gone to the lengths I have in improving the response time of the machine, an OR Gate will be necessary with the setup in video, as a signal needs to be sent to the next stacking module in line. So both signals get connected to an AND Gate, and the output of the AND Gate is sent to the two filters. Both signals also get connected to an OR Gate, in which the output gets sent to the next stacking module in line.

I ran into this issue myself, and discovered that the issue is with the wires layer, and its interaction with "no shape" areas. With the way the wires are done in the video, when there is no shape, the wire loses everything and becomes a "no signal." That drop in signal, is the exact cause of the issue, for what ever reason gates and all that jazz don't play nice with "no signal." Special care must be given to the wires, so that when there is no shape on that belt, the wire instead sends a "0." The best way I personally found is to use 3 NOT Gates, and two transistors. The first transistor is hooked up to the input of the transistor, ready to be outputted when a signal comes into the side. That's where two NOT Gates come in. Shape signal hooks up to the input of one NOT gate thus the NOT Gate outputs a 0. That output is hooked up to the input of the second NOT Gate, so that the second not gate outputs a 1. That output hooks up to the first transistor, so that the shape signal is transmitted down the line like it should. It is also hooked up to the input of a second transistor. The Third NOT Gate has the shape signal as input, and the output connects to the side input of the second transistor. What that does, is when there is no shape on the line, the output on that line becomes 0 thus plays nicely with all other things wire related. Here's a link to a screenshot of what I just talked about steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2452394684 Lower right of image, you'll see the transistor hooked up to the shape signal on top, two not gates hooked up to the side input of the first transistor and the input of the second, in the middle. And the third not gate on the bottom, hooked up to the side input of the second transistor.

you are correct. it is indeed tough, and requires a lot of work, but it is possible. it's all about making sure you know how to use wires and the wire devices to make the job easier.

I think a no-wires factory is doable, using storage units and manually inserting and removing belts.

Its more fast enough when you color the shapes and cut them
@JoMomma1973
@JoMomma1973 3 жыл бұрын
true, but thats only an advantage if you plan on using more than one of the shapes coming out of the cutter. In order to make that work, you would need to get the other parts over to other parts of the machine. in order to make it so the machine could figure out where to send them, you would increase the electronic complexity by a huge margin. I find it's better to let each lane solve its own shape needs, and keep it simple.

@@JoMomma1973 It works a lot better this way if your input is full shapes (eg. CuCuCuCu) rather than the 1 shape with each quadrant (CuRuWuSu). If you double paint full circles, then cut and rotate them you get the same full belt of whatever quadrant you need but using 1/4 the amount of inputs since you dont have to scrap 3/4 of them. Also uses 1/4 of the colours. It's not really any faster but its smaller which means less lag and able to be put closer to the hub. It would mean a pretty big redesign but It's worth thinking about, this method really helped me build mine.

I appreciate the kind words! I certainly would not complain if that were the case, but I'm trying not to stress too much over it. As it is, it's hard to just sit and play a game I personally love without thinking, "hmmm....If I'm going to play a game I like, I should at least record it so others can enjoy it. But what if they don't enjoy it?? Hmmm... maybe I shouldn't play it...." It's a frustrating analysis paralysis!

Why don’t you color the shape before you cut it? It saves tons of space and resources
@JoMomma1973
@JoMomma1973 3 жыл бұрын
A few people have mentioned that and I can see how it could be true in theory, but when I have tried off camera to come up with a design, I find that the opposite is actually true. I end up with 32 logistic trails (4 shapes x 8 colors) that all have to be made available to each of the 16 possible assembly lanes. It makes for a huge mess in practice, at least the way my mind works. Not to say someone out there hasn't already done it and done it well, but I have been resisting looking at other designs so I don't risk ever copying someone else's work, either consciously or subconsciously.

@@JoMomma1973 A source of each shape, then colour them as you do the quarters, then a quad cutter with rotators after the the painter, before the stackers. So machine sources are 7 colours + 4 whole shapes, means that you can feed a whole full belt MAM with a single belt of red/green/blue

hmmm.... All I can say without seeing it is to make sure all your belts are full of materials and paint, and that all the cutting, painting and stacking arrays are fully operating, that the ratios are right and there are no tunnel disconnects.... that is, all underground belts are properly connected so you have full flow. I recently found a bug in mine where the white paint wasn't connected on one lane, but it took getting to level 120 or so to find it

Yeah even with a not awful computer its still laggy. You've gotta cut down on belts as much as possible, If the game doesn't have to render them it'll run way faster. That means more compact builds closer together and replacing normal belts with underground ones wherever you can. Trust me it really helps. Oh and change the game speed or whatever it is from 60Hz down to 30Hz, It basically doubles your fps.
