Dan, you have a rare gift of being a good story teller and a good craftmeister. It's a pleasure to listen to your well composed speech and watch you do your magic with balsa. I've subscribed to you channel since the content and presentation are uniquely elite. I wish you all the best, be your planes always fly straight.

Holy Cow!!! That is an uber compliment, thank you so much. I never imagined when I started this channel that I would be hearing from so many people. I am blessed.

I depend on a low level razor plane .. only takes a few strokes and done. I have used my large stationary belt (6x48”) with a fine grit belt to ever so lightly lever the entire surface flat. Not often with the machine off.

Good to see you back Dan. I believe that tool is called a "hinge slotting tool" - they come in a kit - or used to - with a "fork" and "hook" tool for digging the balsa out of the slot.

That tool you have was sold by Goldberg i used to own hobby shop and used to sell them.I use t bar to sand the v on rudder elevator ailerons.Sand paper on inside t bar by hand hold on top of work bench block sand.

Daniel, the truth is, I only know a few words of Spanish, so I'm sure I muck it up pretty bad. But I love accents. Except Klingon... pass.

Great video series, very educational! For Season 2, please consider a more advanced model, like a WWII Wardbird or Golden Era civilian aircraft. Looking forward to more videos!

I agree Jens. My true passion is scale, and I have two planes that are assembled and ready for painting detailing and making them look real. A Yellow Aircraft P40, and a huge LA-7 built from David Anderson plans. I don't know if I will dedicate a season for each... I think I will skip around between the two planes plus another for specific steps of interest as they come up. But with the Rebel I wanted to show that building from scratch is not difficult and not to be intimidated. On the flip side, some scale plans are difficult and some are poorly designed... Or they lack detail and require a builder that has some engineering talent to complete an incomplete issue. But that kind of know how comes with experience of building a few scratchbuilds. Stay tuned my friend

Good to catch up on that episode Dan I have told some of my flying friends to check out your site 'with the COVID in Australia and Tasmania nearly all flying was cancelled for 4 Months

Dan, regarding those angles on the hing lines with as little material that has to be removed, I would stick with a hand plane. Less chance to ruin your part.
@Capgains77774 жыл бұрын
I agree... It would be much safer using a hand plane or a sanding block. But it has been so long since I have used the bench sander... Had to do it.

Just stumbled onto your site and have been binge watching. Are you in K falls? Just moved here about 2 years ago and have been getting back into the hobby after a 30 year break. Some things have changed and I have enjoyed getting back up to speed watching you videos. Keep' em coning.

Hi Dan, I have only just stumbled across your channel and it's great to see you promoting the joys of educational model airplane building as a hobby. I have not yet watched every episode all the way through but enough to know that your engine choice is not suited to that plane you are building. Wing loading is a serious issue here - you need a wing area at least double of your build for that monster engine. A .90 to 1.40 glow motor would pull that plane around the sky much easier and without all that weight, which was your problem in first place. While we are on tail surfaces here I advise that you sheet that open framework with 3/32 balsa - those open structures will fail under the aerodynamic loads to be encountered. BTW I still have a couple of monster planes but my kick around faves are smaller electric foamies, just saying.

hi Dan been watching this build. love the trips. i wish i had found you before i was so far along my first build in thirty years. i drew my own plans and have built from scratch. Q. are you still going to get the forum page going. ? I have pics of my build and would like to share in the forum when its up.

I think the magic number for having the community page on KZbin is 1000 subs, and we are pluging away toward that number.

Hey Boss, I’m having issues with the 3” ailerons. Where did you find them? I’m having NO luck! Great series! Thank you forre-inspiring me to build!
@Capgains77774 жыл бұрын
Good catch, I couldn't find anyone that makes a 3 inch chord aileron stock either. Someone had a 2 3/4 aileron stock, and on a big strip aileron like this, it will still be more than enough surface. I bought 4 and glued them together to form a thick isometric aileron, but I can see now that the thickness is a little taller than the trailing edge of the wing so I am going to get out that belt sander and sand down the height a little.

aerofred.com has a redrawn in ACAD version of the Ryan's Rebel plans. Go to the site, register for free, and then you can download the plan files and the article as well. Free

Dan I love this sSeries of videos that you’re putting out I’m getting inspired to build this exact plane I was wondering how many rolls of mono kote would it take to cover this aircraft ?? Can anyone help me with this problem?
@Capgains77774 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel. I bought 5 rolls, but I intend to have a half and half color scheme. I think you would be okay with 4 rolls... The standard 6 foot rolls, not the double sized. Even with that you could have extra. But its always better to have a little more in case you need patches, or repair in the future.

Thanks dan I love this series your good at making videos I’m trying to price what this pane is going to cost to build before building that’s why I was asking please continue the series I just had the plans printed today so I might just do this project if it’s not costing an arm n leg

Dan I was wondering if there’s a way to make this plane a two peace wing instead of one peace to make it easier for transport or would that not be practical?
@Capgains77774 жыл бұрын
There is always a way to make a two piece wing, or a three piece. The most common would probably be a sleeve and tube. Sig airplanes use an aluminum channel and tongue which also works well and there are probably numerous ways you could custom build wooden spars that could be locked into position. True scratchbuilding. Regardless, it can be done with a little enginuity. The only take is, it will add weight to the overall design. Multi piece wings weigh more because of the additional hardware.

why not use a vacum or shop vac
@Capgains777710 ай бұрын
I do use a shop vac, but I like to focus on the process of building the plane for the video and not how I clean up the shop.

It might have been a little aggressive. And admittedly it has a has a higher risk of messing something up in a shorter period of time. But it worked. Maybe I was lucky.
