Ah! Well, that certainly answers my prior speculation about "dual modulus" sharpening at similar grits! Knowing what we know now, it seems like a different rate of removal between sides is important for extension formation. And a further thought on this - burr thickness is related to undeformed chip thickness, so forming a strong extension depends on a variety of factors which affect scratch depth, not the least of which is grit coarseness (along with stone stiffness, grain spacing, morphology, etc)

Yeah - I think I had thought some of those thoughts in a much less organized way, lol. I appreciate the way you say things. In my head it's more like "hmmm... coarseness matters... but does it matter more or less than binder or concentration of abrasives?"

My guess is the blade steel crystal structure of these high grit cutting are fractured during the sharpening process. This may be in part the result of high pressures created by high surface area on high grit stones, or fractures from heating & rapid cooling of the apex in the sharpening process. May be the easiest thing to try is sharpening with a stone cooled down to 35ºf to 40ºf. - I will e-mail you micrographs that clearly depict the broken steel crystal structures 10 micron deep into the cutting edge. - I will also include a diagram which I believe makes it easier to perceive the extent of the damage.
