SUPER-DUEL Full Highlights (Rare)
LA Lakers vs San Antonio Spurs
December 1, 2000
Staples Center
SO - 36 pts, 16r, 2a, 3b / 15-23 fg, 6-14 ft
TD - 24 pts, 11r, 3a, 1s / 10-20 fg, 4-8 ft
This matchup between Los Angeles and San Antonio turned out to be a pivotal in a long term sense. After splitting the season series 2-2, the teams would face off in the Conference Finals. The Lakers ended up annihilated the Spurs by way of a 4-game sweep in which they outscored them by an accumulative 89 points. This included a game 3 by 39, and game 4 series-clincher by 29.

Unreal duel between two literal titans of the game. It’s crazy that in a 16-year stretch from 1998-99 to 2013-14, the Lakers and Spurs accounted for 10 of those championships. These two teams defined the Western Conference battles in the 2000s.

Well said. During that span the only other WC teams to even make the finals were the mavs x2 and thunder once. Lakers/spurs had a stretch there where they represented the west 11 out of 12 seasons. Crazy.

Calling Shaq primarily a power player doesn't mean he didn't have footwork. You can't go straight through people every play obviously. He was an amazing athlete & had good footwork; still a power player. Occasionally a little sloppy when gathering his feet (like the walk he gets away with at :44) but we know he was a great big in more ways than one.

These two players had a lot of respect for each other. To hear Shaq talk about Duncan, he paid him a high compliment when Shaq said the there was no actual “Spurs system. It was just Duncan.” And that Parker and Ginobli were very good players but that Duncan made them a lot better because of how great he was. He even gave him a nickname. It’s harder to find praises from Duncan about Shaq because Duncan never said anything. No interviews. No podcasts. No shows. No endorsements. But Duncan has acknowledged how dominant and literally unstoppable Shaq was.

One vote from unanimous MVP (robbed should’ve been unanimous), All Star MVP, Finals MVP (best performance ever in a finals avg damn near 40/20) and finished 2nd in the DPOY award which was a robbery considering Shaq was ranked as the best defender that season. And he did all that by garnering more attention than any player in the history of the NBA!!!! Nobody carried double/triple/quadruple teams to the rim like Shaq did.

Basketball in the 00s might be the slowest pace in history or something but I still find it just as exciting if not more than today's game because of the foul trouble duel. Star bigs going against each other and if your team's Star C has 3 fouls already you'll be biting the nails watching your team gets clapped inside. People always say if X player has a 3 point shot he'll be great. For Shaq it's much simpler, if only he could shoot FT he'll easily have the best 3 years peak.

There was just something different about this era. It was more exciting, way more competitive. Even the audio on the broadcast, it was louder, you can hear the rim rattling, the crowd was louder. Can’t believe the NBA has watered down the game so much, this shit was dope, games are actually hard to watch nowadays even playoff games
@JamesMiller69
@JamesMiller69 Жыл бұрын
Totally agree, I think the big difference is really highlighted in this game specifically, this era was won and lost in the paint. The 3-ball was the natural progression of the NBA but it took so much of the oomf out of the game. 20 point leads are built and lost in minutes, every shot is a dagger, every opposing 3 takes the air out of the home crowd, so many momentum time-outs, less intense defense, it sucks but it's like the death of TV for streaming, it's just how it goes I guess.

Great video! IMO at their absolute peak, Duncan was the better player but by a slim margin. However, I can’t argue with those who feel differently. I’d also add that Timmy had the better career. Shaq, during that 3peat, was soooo dominant; I had the privilege of witnessing these 2 go at it in person on several occasions. I’ve never witnessed anyone come close. (Never saw Wilt nor those that came before). Despite this, the reason I choose Duncan>Shaq is my belief that Timmy could win without anyone having to get the ball to him deep in the paint; as well as his under appreciated Defense. (The fact that he was never awarded a DPOY is almost criminal on the part of voters). Very few, if any, can match the duration (19 seasons) of TD’s effectiveness and consistency on both ends; and winning. Never missed the playoffs.

I find it hilarious the 2 popular points to discredit Duncan is that he had so much help/and it was the system. Yet others with more help n money to spend it's never mentioned. Top 75 players/HOFs like Kobe/Shaq, MJ/Pip/Rodman/Kukoc, KD/Harden/Westbrook GSt. LBJ Superteams. As for the system nonsense; it's not my view but what about LA; who couldn't win without Phil Jackson's "system", or GSt couldn't win before Kerr.

They both played great, but they didn't guard each other, so I don't really see it as a duel. People who try to say that shaq is the greatest big ever, are wrong in my opinion. Either he or wilt are the most dominant players ever, but being the most dominant, versus the greatest ever, is a big difference. You have to look at skill, and shaq did not have a lot of that. I've always thought that hakeem and Duncan were better, because of how much more skilled they were, and how much better they were defensively. Duncan was almost as dominant as shaq, but was much more skilled, and made his teammates much better. I believe it was in his second finals victory, that he played out of this world. He put up numbers that shaq could only dream about. He got screwed out of a quadruple double, because the refs didn't give him 2 blocks that he made. Would have been only the fourth person to ever do it, and the sole one to do so in the finals. He had 20 points, 20 rebounds, 10 assists, and 8 blocks. His averages for the series were amazing. 24 pts, 17 reb, 5 assists, 5 blks, and over 2 steals a game. Shaq could never do that. He just didn't have the skill. I know he could not have taken those rockets teams to 2 titles either. Shaq himself said that someone could tell him Duncan was the greatest player ever, and that he wouldn't argue against it. Tells you all you need to know. Duncan is the greatest big I have ever seen, and the greatest of all time imo. He is no doubt a top 10 player, and could very easily have 7 titles, instead of 5.

This is a bunch of trash! Duncan only avg over 24 points once in the regular season! Why? Because he was never asked to carry the scoring load the way Shaq was. Shaq was doubled tripled and quadrupled team way more and I mean way more thn Duncan could ever imagine. Shaq took 3 different teams to the NBA finals and was a top50 player after only 3 1/2 years. Prime Shaq bullied the twin towers of Robinson and Duncan at the same time like they were school girls. Shaq had lots of skill saying otherwise is a joke. And no Duncan was never dominant like Shaq 🤣🤣 this is clearly a Spurs fanboy. After 2002 Shaq wasn’t the same player. Hakeem and Shaq were both better players!

people always fantasize all time great guys teaming up with steph, even bron and kd at times, you don't hear it with mj, larry bird, kobe, or tim duncan, etc., and thats why those guys aren't on their level, and thats another reason why people find it hard to put bron over mj and kobe, even some think steph is better than kobe, but from these fantasy comments, its proven people want stacked teams for curry, while kobe can win with much less

This is more "fodder" for proof Duncan wasn't as good as people think. He didn't guard Shaq and he often was guarded by the weaker post defender on other teams (e.g. 35 year old Horace Grant) and the following years by Samaki Walker.

@@DukeTolgocorrect. It’s not really good comparison. A lot could be said about Duncan as a defender as to why he typically avoided matchups with the opponent’s best big especially if they were a low post player. One could say oh he’s such a smart team (zone) defender. Or another might say he’s not a great iso defender like David Robinson Hakeem etc were. And consequently why Duncan never had high block totals or thus why didn’t factor in serious consideration for DPOY.
