Is this how the C19th British built their railway arches? Usually we see bricks along the span but some have have the first layer bricks set at 45 degrees to the span.

How doesn’t it fall apart? How much compression can it withstand? And how many hours for the next layer?

Too bad Filippo Brunelleschi didn’t know about these guys. Filippo Brunelleschi is most famous for designing the dome of the Florence Cathedral completed by 1436, a feat of engineering that had not been accomplished since antiquity, as well as the development of the mathematical technique of linear perspective in the art which governed pictorial depictions of space until the late 19th century and influenced the rise of modern science.

Similar arches in the Catalan have survived earthquakes that have torn down more modern building and some of them are over a thousand years old.

Autocad frame structures are for uneducated people. Arches like this use natural tension and have lasted for countless centuries. Please open your mind and visit some of these buildings that still stand strong.
