We don't have wind issues, but boy, do we have raccoons, dogs, and wild animals. Even had a small bear a few years ago. This is really clean and classic looking. I like it! We'd have to secure it to a base because the animals easily push it over, but easy to do! Thanks for another great project!
@WoodshopDiaries4 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! That’s crazy! I guess you live in the mountains? Maybe this could help with that...it would be pretty easy to add a base to secure it to the ground better
@abelinkin4 жыл бұрын
I started building this yesterday. I might make it 2 wide or make or put a frame in middle section so I can put both our recycling and trash cans. Both are about the same size and animals also are a problem (racoons have gotten into my trash and occasionally the recycling when someone put food stuff not fully cleaned out of said recyclables). So this would put an extra layer of deterrent for those critters. My current build was an ugly box frame that I would have to lift the trash can and recycling bin out of and when full, they are very heavy to get out of the 2' tall box. I like this design. Thanks for posting it!

I did see one comment about using cheap fencing pieces for the slats and might do that. I was going to do cedar but $130 worth of wood vs $85 for the 1x4 pin from Lowes. I may go with the fencing and save the pine for indoor projects. Just needs to be sanded a bit as the commenter said.

The cover looks good and I like the stain and paint colors you chose. I have a fence around our air conditioner and I coat it every 2 years with an outdoor stain and it has not rotted yet so if you coat the cover it should last a long time.

The waste management company here provides the trash bin and it is a monster size one, still I have thought about building something like this and I appreciate the motivation your video gives me to stop waiting and start building. I like the idea of using cedar fence pickets for the slats because they should last really a long time. They come super rough (where I am) but a few trips through a thickness planer would smooth them down pretty nicely and I have some left over from a previous project.

When you install your slats, you should put 2 screws on either end of at least one of the slats per side to stop any racking. With all the slats having only 1 screw on each end it can still rack...

I like how it turned out. The only suggestion I would give is to reinforce or support the back more. I noticed that when you open and close the door it moves some. You can also correct this by securing the back to the side of your house but I can understand why you would not want to do this. Regardless it turned out nice.

A couple of years ago I built a woodshed. When I asked the guy at the lumber yard if I needed cedar, he said as long as I primed and painted every nook and cranny I could build it out of regular 2x4s and it would probably last for twenty years.

Thanks so much for this video. I’m going to make three of these with hinged lids for our trash, recycling and yard waste. (yes, I live in CA and they give us a bin for everything! 😂) Question, on the cut list (pg 3) it says the side panel front pieces are 1 1/2” X 3 1/2” X 46 1/2” with one end mitered 7 degrees. Yet, on the diagram on pg 4, it shows this front side piece as 46” rather than 46 1/2”. So my question is do I cut it to 46 1/2” and then miter the end 7 degrees? Or do I cut it 46” and miter the end 7 degrees? Thanks in advance!

@@WoodshopDiaries i almost have it done. Need to buy cut another 1x4 for sides and one more for front.I resized the plans a bit to my trash can but made it too snug. It would fit but barely so I had to move the 3/4" 1x4's from inside to outside. They look better on inside imho. I could plane them down a bit to give me the 1/2" of extra space for it to roll in and move them back in. I saw the dog-eared picket fence pieces are like $1.82 each at home depot which might be a bit cheaper than the 1x4" pine and more resistance to water. I put Thompsons water seal on all the slats as its not cedar or pressure treated. Some of my 2x4s are as they were leftovers I found under my deck. Might extend to twice as wide or make a 2nd one. But I need a rolling recycle bin with more capacity. Since COVID-19, we have been generating almost 2 trash cans worth of recyclables but only 1 of trash a week. Here are pics of it (if links works). I may put some darker stain. I like the look of yours. My pine looks too pale. Could be the variety or the stain. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ig5zgovm80nuPufvfmVwRPV6h7QBdWhn?usp=sharing

I have a problem figuring out the length of lumber to cut when there's an angle and distance between the tall and short boards - don't want to waste lumber, since it's now 3x the price from last Nov!
@WoodshopDiaries3 жыл бұрын
The plans for this detail the measurements you need 👍 they’re in the description 😄
@d.a.tsun51043 жыл бұрын
@@WoodshopDiaries Thank you, but my project measurements are not the same as yours. Also, I don't actually plan to make this for the same purpose as yours. Let's say I use 7 degree angle, but the width of whatever I build is greater than the one on your plan, by the time I get to the front piece, the height of that front may be too short. That's what I always have problem with, figuring out the proper measurement so I don't waste the lumber. Plus, one mitre cut on a straight piece of board yields 2 ends of the same angle so technically I should be able to cut once and get 2 vertical boards with the same angle. If the width of my side panel is different than yours, using the same 7 degree angle, the heights of the vertical boards, esp. the front one, will be different. Or, the angle will have to be modified. That seems to be the issue facing others too who left comments on your blog.
@WoodshopDiaries3 жыл бұрын
I’m not 100% understanding what you’re saying, but my suggestion is to start at the front so you get the correct height, then cut the bottom piece to get you the correct width. Then use a large square or a straight board (just make sure it’s square to the bottom board) and lay them out on your work table. Then you can kind of measure and mark where you need things to go instead of doing the math to get there. You can cut the back Board the height you need and lay a board across the front end back and mark the angles and lengths that way.

Why would I need plans to build a cover for one bin???. No one has just one bin. I live alone and I have both a garbage bin and the recycling bin.
