As a snowplow driver give us space between your vehicle and ours plows. We are trying our hardest and best to clear the road ways safe.
@davidw415117 күн бұрын
Yes because a 3 mile long conga line doing sometimes as slow as 12 mph is awesome. Back before 2008 when CSP told CDOT plow drivers how much dirt to put down, they had minimal closures. Now they use mag chloride, stop the flow of traffic, reduce how much and how often they plow (lot of time spent in the median and off ramps) , dump all the snow in the right lane and clear the left lane first (which makes no sense since Colorado is a keep right except to pass state) and finally putting chain laws up for wet roads. They haven’t utilized the code 15 single axle cmv chain law since 2007. All cmv must chain. Colorado use to be the state that would show other states how to take care of their roads in winter. Now it’s a joke. Poly blades that flex and do blade chatter going down the road causing washboard roads, which the high spots get packed down while the low spots melt away. Same principle if someone walks on your snow covered side walk and then you try to shovel it away and you have ice packed foot prints. It creates ice potholes that last for days. You want space, you take plenty of it. Plow drivers use to be cool here. They’d pull in front of you and back up and start dumping sand. They’d sometimes pull you or even push your semi. Now they push snow in front of you and cause you to lose traction. You get what you give.

And waiting until the crashes pile up into 100 fatalities in places like Casper Wyoming just to make more emergency services money and THEN send the snowplows out, 'cuz they'd rather spend money on fireworks in July! Highway 80 and 70 need to just be inside tunnel segments all the way across the Rockies so the ever drifting snow and high winds don't have as much impact. There are 100 mph wind warning signs on the Colorado side in places. Don't go light! Chain that outside right rear trailer tire too! The drag might just keep you from jackknifing. Snow socks were approved years ago to keep truckers from getting hit by passing cars during roadside emergency chainups and to keep them from having heart attacks. If your company operates in the Rockies and your safety meetings don't regularly teach proper chainups, then you should repeatedly report to the central office their negligence of duty until they do or stand up and interrupt the stupidity and ask if any drivers want an on the spot chain up class? And they have the nerve to call them Safety Meetings!? Same with trailering dollies on ice and getting the dock to load weight blocks on empties, greasing every saddle using old grease from the grooves and a piece of broken pallet butter stick if you have too. Greased 5th wheels tug straight. Don't use dollies held together with bolts (they rust and fall apart). Use welded dollies. Don't use Super Singles in the Rockies, especially for tractor drives. Don't use single axles during winter no matter how much they want to save fuel. Keep the tractor idling and warm when it gets -60°F below 0°F on the Continental Divide. Keep a propane torch with the trigger start for frozen locks and frozen solid landing gear and 5th wheels that won't release, as long as you're not placarded Flammable or Explosive. 10°F is T-shirt and shorts weather in the mountains! ;)) (Keep open cell 1/2" foam with a wind layer Cold Weather gear, extra batteries, bucket toilet with liner and sawdust, extra water, and food, meds, etc. always.) You might be out in one lonely spot for a week or more away from civilization. You wanted to be a trucker?!

@davidw4151 I've been plowing snow in the mountains of British Columbia for a few years now. When I first started,we did what worked and kept the highways safe for the past 50 years. Today there are new managers in the office who are trying to re-invent the wheel. These new management types have never operated a snowplow and have us continuously plowing out the center of the highway and slushing up the right hand lanes. This forces all traffic to crowd the fast lane and creates shitty conditions in general. Things don't make sense anymore. It also doesn't help that the younger generations have poor work ethics and prefer to sit in the shop or in the rest areas surfing on their phones. The only thing I can recommend when there is a snow storm happening in BC is for the Truckers to park. You can't count on the highway crews here to consistently or reliably do a good job of maintaining the highways anymore.

Part of being a professional driver is to watch the weather. You made a pretty sound decision in turning down a load going into the area. Yea, your dispatch is pissed at you, but you have to look out after you. I had dispatchers try sending me into so really horrific shit before, like hurricanes, wild fire areas, & areas that are know to be impacted by a blizzard in a day or 2. They get you into these areas & get you unloaded minutes before the storms hit, & leave you sitting or running for your life with an m/t trailer in hurricane force winds. Drivers need to think. If your m/t most companies are not paying you squat to run like hell to get out of there anyway, & if you end up wrecking the truck, it's going to be your fault. Nice call on your part. They will not have the roads back open until June.

Drivers, if you feel your job depends on it, take the load. If you do take the load, make sure you pay attention to the warnings on the commercial truck traffic in the areas you are going to be running in. If you violate any laws along the way & end up with fines, you're the one who is going to pay them. Also before you accept a load into a danger area, ensure you will be paid for the sitting time in traffic waiting for wrecks to clear & highways to reopen. This could as long as 3-5 days after the storm has passed. Make sure you have provisions for the sitting time. (Food, water, & snacks). Don't take the load if they refuse to pay you for the sitting time.

Colorado Truck Driver here. I was sent to a DC in Nebraska for the week. I got a load today headed to the high planes east of Colorado Springs that way I can reset at home and make a Monday Vet appointment. I had checked the weather and knew it's bad but didn't know about road closures and neither did my dispatch. As I headed west I made some calls to friends to get updates and have them check specific locations. A very good friend told me the state is closed and there's really no way in. I didn't fully believe her, I figured she was being hyperbolic. She pulled up the road closures and read them off. I said shit. It's a long list. I-70, hwy 24, parts of I 25 in the south, the 160. I've already chained up 2 times this month for Wolf Creek Pass (gorgeous place) on the 160 and Independent Pass on I 70. It was roughly 6:30pm and I'm on I-80. I know that you can't find parking late in the evening this far east you have to be west of Cheyenne, Wo to park late. I if I try to make miles and get closer more and more drivers going through Colorado are going to be clogging up parking. Loves, Pilots, Flying J's, TA and Petro are gonna be shit shows. So I found the first smaller Truck stop, a gulf and Fat Dog and parked my ass and looked at the closures. I'm not close. It's way earlier than I like to stop making me get up way earlier than I want to wake up but I didn't have to fight for parking. No truckers doing 40mph nearly hitting my dog, (BTW it's the last thing you'll do in this life, so consider yourself carefully). It's quiet, they have showers and shitters. Hell they have Patron Silver for 43 bucks, it's over 60 in Colorado. I'm not drinking but still it's a decent selection of liquor. I was able to get some breakfast biscuits fresh made. I'm going to check things in the morning before I move. The storm has been going on for 3 days, in some places 4 days. Today was the worst day. It's suppose to end tomorrow morning and true to Colorado get warm again. If the roads are plowed the ice will melt. It'll freeze again the first night so I'll have to use the day wisely and get parked.

Yeah dispatchers dont understand that either. They've never been out in the chit. If you miss you're delivery yhey dont care if the roads are shut down and if you work for a company they will hold that against you. Ots ridiculous but ive known guys that have been fired because the miss the delivery because od weather.

It has to do with the Elevation changes, there should be truck restictions when the Temp's are below 25 in order to keep people Safe! hear in CO every yr there are some bad accindents during Winter on all the Down hills, Trucks become moving out of controll missiles

I have driven enough in bad weather. I had enough and changed to a company running 2 southern states and make more than I did running otr. Just rain and fog for me but mainly sunny days.
