Hey Nitya, it would be a huge help if you could take the time to answer some of my questions 1) Could you also please explain what working under a professor for research work is called exactly? Is it A research fellowship, research assistantship or something different? 2) When working with professors i i) Is it necessary to work on a research paper or is there any other way to be involved with the professors in my capacity as a high school student? ii) When one is approaching professors for "research-related opportunities under them", should I propose the topic I am interested in or just ask for the opportunity to work for them first & then take it further? 3) When approaching a professor who doesn’t have a designated lab for research related opportunities, where can I find out what they are currently involved in? 4) Should I approach professors to work under a particular field they might be involved in at that point of time or a particular topic (if the topic, I’m just unclear on how I could find out the topic they’re involved in) 5) What is the involvement of students when working under professors ? Do the professors mentor us and guide us to work in the way they'd like or are we supposed to have done a lot of groundwork and just follow their instructions like in the setup of a firm?

Wow that's a lot of questions! 1} I just asked for an internship. Doesn't matter really! Like I said in another comment, i just wanted to learn and wasn't doing this with college applications in mind so I didn't care what it was called! 2)i) I think in some of kind of research paper. I mean research inevitably always does lead to a paper of some sort to share that knowledge with the community! ii) Either. I got put on an already existing project with a pre-decided topic. 3) Personal website/resume or just ask in the email. 4) I suggest field. If you see my email in the video that's what I talked about 5) Depends. Most people I know have grad students in the lab mentoring them for the most part and handing out the day to day instructions. Hope that helps:)

Hey! So what I saw from a screenshot on the video , the professor replied in August 2020 which is super near to the ED application deadline with which you applied to Dartmouth. Hey! I just put it on my common app and put the year as 12th only! The ED deadline was Nov 1; although at the time I was actually considering a gap year because of the covid situation. This just seemed like and is a great oppurtunity to learn about research and it has absolutely amplified by passion for it! It's still ongoing. And no, I didn't get an lor :) I wasn't doing this with college applications in mind so I saw no reason to ask for one. My philosophy is to just do what you're passionate about and college will take care of itself! You're welcome to ask questions haha

Even before the Pandemic students from India, especially from prestigious institutions like the IITs, used to indulge in Virtual Research Internships. So I don't think that Virtual Internships will 'stop' after the Pandemic. However, the number of students for the same will certainly decrease. Hope I was able to answer your query :)

If a Prof is willing to work with you, he/she will definitely understand your circumstances and give you a chance to do everything online.
