I agree. I have watched enough of these build videos that I understand the overall process pretty well. I often just skip to the end to see the final product. Would love to see more commentary, especially from the folks who are having to do the work on why this is different.

I appreciate the craftsmanship and using exotic leathers for no other reasons such as "why not?" and "because the leather looks so good!". Frankly not a fan of ostrich, bison is fine but these are just awesome!

Love these last few exotic boot builds, totally unnecessary and have no purpose being on a work boot but they look so good. I also like having the little bits of commentary every now and then
@001blackmax Жыл бұрын
Some exotics are for dress and do not belong on a work boot, However some exotics are better Than cowhide in many ways. Pure Stingray,Elephant,shark,hippo,boar,kudu, to name a few are all much stronger and tougher than the best cowhides. Cowhide isn’t bad of course but some exotics are better but come at a cost. I too like the Commentary and wish there was more sometime
@christianjondahl7198 Жыл бұрын
The shark is so tough and for sure belongs on a work boot but imo probably just on the lowers.
@driverjamescopeland7 ай бұрын
You obviously aren't familiar with shark leather. It's the one of, if not THE most durable boot leathers there is. To my knowledge, the only leather with higher abrasion resistance is stingray... but the texture of stingray collects debris and shortens wear life. I have owned two pair of shark boots. One has been through three sets of soles, despite having almost never seen pavement. As of this year, they'll be 28 years old, and belonged to my father before 2009... and they never had an easy life with him. Despite the abuse, they've never required repair to anything but the soles.
@driverjamescopeland7 ай бұрын
@christianjondahl7198 - shark is a fine choice for the uppers on a logger boot. The extra puncture and abrasion resistance is well worth it, compared to traditional cowhide. Shark has about the same puncture protection as bison or elk, while having better abrasion and water resistance, at significantly lighter weight.

Those are absolutely beautiful but would violate the deal I have with sharks, that I won’t consume them if they don’t consume me. Maybe a bison leather with rough texture might look close. Beautiful for sure.

I’m curious to hear why they had to remove the liner (the extra liner of natural cxl) in the vamp when lasting. What was the problem they were having.
@nicksboots Жыл бұрын
The problem was that there was too much material to comfortably pull around the last, the shark doesn't stretch as much as our cow leathers therefore compounding the problem. We kept the upper liner but the lower is only 2 layers, all a part of the trial and error process of these videos!

@simongrushka983 Жыл бұрын
thanks, but how do you measure the ounces? isn't it a weight measure not a thickness?
@eingames9931 Жыл бұрын
Way back in the days before reliable gauges they would cut out a section of the hide of a certain size(can't remember what) and weigh it. This weight would give a relative thickness of the hide. But when good gauges came along nobody needed to sacrifice part of the leather anymore. However, the description of ounces has stuck in many places.

Yes, shark leather is one of the most waterproof (without adding chemicals) because it must isolate the shark from the water so that it does not lose moisture through the osmosis process. It is also one of the most resistant to abrasion.

@lyodbraun Жыл бұрын
I think kangaroo Leather is very thin, and not heavy enough to build boots, I had race gloves made of it and it’s damn good stuff held up to several crashes very abrasion resistant I wanna see some stingray leather boots
@thetable123 Жыл бұрын
@@lyodbraunI have had a couple pair of kangaroo boots, and plenty of Held gloves. I think they'd stand up just fine for lasting at full thickness. From what I remember reading, they shave the leather down to top grain or split grain, (can't remember which,) for motorcycle gloves. Now, the other piece I remember is that kangaroo leather doesn't breath well, because they only have pores in their tails. Personally, I'd like to see them go for the north American equivalent pest, some white tailed forest rat (deer) boots.

The hardest part of working with shark, is that it doesn't stretch. Great for the finished product... a real pain for the cobbler who's using templates made for cow hide 🤦♂️ For those who can afford it, shark is the best leather available for work boots.
