Join shark scientist Kristian Parton as he dives into a creature on the broadnose sevengill shark - an ancient shark species! Kristian looks at sevengill sharks, asking important questions like: why do sevengill sharks have seven gills? He's also joined by shark scientist Meghan Holst, who's researching sevengill sharks in San Francisco Bay.

i'v got a grey cat named mako. when he was a kitten he had a triangular ridge of fur that ran all the way down his tail. wife had to take him to the vet recently. he jumped through the dropped ceiling tiles and fell down inside the wall. fire department had to cut a hole in their wall. when they started to patch him up, he almost did it again. had to finish his treatment and exam in the restroom.

Suprisingly despite having a primitive design they are still pretty good. I think theyre cool bc of how different they look from other sharks aswell as some things like pack hunting. They feel like Bluntnose Sixgills but instead of being large and bulky they're smaller, faster and more agile. I also find the name "cow shark" somewhat funny.

@annabizaro-doo-dah
@annabizaro-doo-dah Жыл бұрын
That makes a lot of sense. Although if they are very ancient it's interesting that oxygen levels were higher millions of years ago. I wonder if as ancient sharks used to high O² seas, in order to survive they adapted with an extra gill? That's the sort of stuff I'd love to hear discussed.

Another great creature feature. I've been interested in sevengills ever since reading a book about them as a kid and imo they look straight-up adorable. I wonder if the extra gills are a vestigial feature like the human appendix? The speculation about cooperative hunting is fascinating and a topic I hope more scientists look into - social behaviour in sharks is so understudied.

Kris I remember reading about Sixgills Hornby Island British Colombia. A small dive operator for those wanting to see this unusual shark. Here's what I found lurks in my neighbourhood ( Vancouver LOL) Sixgill shark -A deeper water shark the Sixgill can grow to lengths of 16 feet. This species is also listed as a special concern under the Species at Risk Act. The feeding habits of these sharks can vary from other sharks to seals, squid and bony fish. Although an attack on any human is extremely unlikely people should always remain respectful when in their environment - which is deep, and not really of concern to kayakers and paddleboarders. The Sixgill has seen a population boom around Hornby Island BC in 2014 due to a food source increase researchers believe. Sevengill shark ( more rare) Can grow up to 5 feet in length with a flattened body and large pectoral fins. Researchers are finding their habits to be very unpredictable and they can be dangerous and often hunt in packs.

Kristian: is it possible that the ostensible “cooperative hunting” of sevengills is a *contingent,* adventitious occurrence that happens only in certain special, unusual circumstances when each shark is actually acting in its own self interest, and the cumulative effect *LOOKS LIKE* cooperative hunting of the sort practiced by the pods of orca and other toothed dolphins and porpoises? BTW: would you ever consider DOING A VIDEO ON THE ANGEL SHARK? I realise it’s not a man-eating or biting torpedo-shaped mackeral or requiem shark more generally, but other species of shark--and there are many of them--without the classic torpedo shape of the requiem sharks are also pretty darned fascinating! The thresher shark, I think, is also one of the most neglected and under-studied shark species. Aside from their unique hunting technique in which it employs that glorious tail, it has several other intriguing behaviours that common viewers seldom see documented on film, bc they do not include the braindead sensationalisms of attacks on humans. This shark would also make a great feature CHEERS!

Sevengill sharks are actually quite cool.Theyre not a big animal, however.I watched a video about them and Orcas in the waters off New Zealand and it surprised me.The Orcas were hunting the sevengill sharks and obviously the sharks had no chance.But what really surprised me was, when a single orca closed in for the attack, the sevengill actually turned 180 degrees and charged at the orca and the orca backed off.Of course the shark was eventually killed, but these small sharks clearly pack a decent punch

my guess for the gills is along the lines of the water of the oceans being different when it was first evolving, could have had less/more of a certain element for when it was evolving, vs when more modern shark species were evolving. but im not a scientist or anything at all, its kind of just some wild shot in the dark, so def take this with a grain of salt hehe

the dude who got bitten by a shark, stitched himself up and went to the bar like nothing happened is one of the most Australian/new zealander things I've ever heard. When will there will be a creature feature on that guy

You ever thought of doing some videos on extinct sharks that aren't the megalodon? Or is there not as much info on those?

What I would like to know is *why* the single dorsal fin on hexanchiforme sharks such as the cow sharks are sooooo much closer to the caudal fin than they are on lamniforme sharks such as the ocean whitetip or bull shark. Can you shed any light on this, Kristan?
@SHARKBYTES
@SHARKBYTES 3 ай бұрын
@@MrMalvolio29 this is a great question, the best answer I can give is that the Hexanchiformes are the oldest known group of modern sharks - their single dorsal fin placed far back on their almost eel like body, is likely a feature retained from even older shark lineages. These guys are true living fossils.

I am so ignorant and like being educated on sharks but I will admit, I usually watch shark videos because they’re terrifying 🙈 The more I learn about how intelligent they are, makes them even more chilling but fantastic.
