Hello and welcome back to the channel. Today, we're diving back into the fascinating world of Tiger Beach.
Two recent videos have set the internet ablaze with questions, and I'm here to try and quench your curiosity. But before we plunge in, if you haven't already, hit that subscribe button for Space Shark on KZbin and follow SpaceSharkEarth on Instagram. Trust me, you won't want to miss a single fin-tastic moment!
Now, let's sink our teeth into the juicy stuff.
First up: shark affection. Yes, you heard that right! Prepare to have your mind blown as we explore how shark expert Jim Abernethy is changing the game. Picture this: a gentle touch on a tiger shark's snout, and boom! They're coming back for more. But wait, there's more! Jim's not just charming tiger sharks; he's also got lemon sharks wrapped around his finger - or should I say, resting peacefully on the seafloor beneath his touch.
Now, before you start crying "shark abuse," let's bust some myths wide open:
1. These interactions are as safe as swimming with sharks can be (which, let's be real, still requires a lot of caution).
2. Contrary to popular belief, lemon sharks aren't in danger when resting. They've got a nifty trick called buccal pumping to keep those gills working. They use their cheek muscles to pump water over their gills.
3. The "sharks must always swimming or they will die" myth? Total fiction for most sharks. Out of 500 species, only a handful need to keep moving to stay alive - those sharks are ram ventalators… if you hugged a Great White Great Hammerhead - that would be not be good.
4. Gloved hands hurting sharks? Puh-lease! If the thriving stingray population at Stingray City in the Cayman Islands is any indication, gentle touch is A-OK. Each ray is touched bare handed by thousands of toursts… ALL DAY LONG - the lemon sharks are stroked probably for a few mintues…. Remember, stingrays are basically just sharks that got steamrolled by evolution. And a 22 year on going study at Stingray City shows the population there is just thriving thank you very much.
I know many of you say … just leave them all alone…. I’d be happy to stay out of the water for the rest of my life once you tell me the wholesale slaughter of sharks has stopped…
But hold your horses (or should I say, hammerheads)! This isn't an open invitation to go cuddling with every shark you see. These interactions require advanced diving skills and professional supervision. Sharks are wild animals, not pool toys - treat them with respect!
Now, let's tackle the hook situation. That viral video of dive master Mike from the world famous Jim Abernethy Scuba Adventures - working on removing a hook? It's a glimpse into real conservation work. Hooks in sharks are more common than you'd think, and removing them safely can make a huge difference. But again, don't try this at home, kids! Even I, your trusty shark-loving narrator and in the water shark cinematographer, wouldn't attempt it without proper training.
So, the million-dollar question: Am I insane for spending so much time with sharks? Well, consider this: while I've been swimming with these misunderstood creatures for nearly two decades, and in that time humans have been ruthlessly killing an estimated 72 million sharks every single year. Who's the real danger here?
My mission? To showcase the beauty and crucial importance of these animals. Thanks to the power of social media, I can bring you along on this underwater adventure. Every view, every share, every comment helps spread awareness and, hopefully, sparks a passion for shark conservation in someone new.
