Sharon Stone discusses the major health scare that almost took her life

Sharon Stone talks with Katie about her new book, "The Beauty of Living Twice" in which she chronicles her 2001 subarachnoid hemorrhage, or bleeding around the brain, and the extremely trying moments int he health care system dealing with the diagnosis.
Sharon and Katie also discuss the progress, and lack thereof, made by and for women in the entertainment industry.

This interview makes me sad. I can’t believe that this woman had been incredibly famous and beloved by millions of people all over the world yet she was all alone in her early forties when she had the stroke and it took 3 days for someone to take her to the hospital! I find it so shocking and sad, she is very lucky to be alive and have recovered fully. I am glad she is speaking out and sharing her incredible life story. 💕

Same thing happened to Joni Mitchell a few years ago. She too had a brain aneurysm and laid in her home for 3 days before being found. She should have died but somehow managed to survive. She has worked herself back to a degree but nowhere near as good as Sharon has.

I work in mental health and see how the medical profession downplays people with mental health issues. It’s so sad. People with severe persistent mental illness on average due 25 years earlier than people without mental illness. It’s pathetic and sad. It angers me so much.

I had 30 years of belly pain, misdiagnosed by numerous docs until finally, by a stroke of luck, I found a surgeon who recognized my symptoms as gallbladder and I had surgery that very evening. She said there were 3 large stones inside, one the size of a peach pit. There was no excuse for the pain I suffered up to that point except ignorance.

@@damiettes7140 I saw a half-dozen, in 3 different states. They all misdiagnosed the cause of my stomach pain as either ulcers, gird or indigestion, even after an ultrasound and CT scan, they missed it. I had zero indigestion, ulcer or gird.

For 25 years, doctors didn't take me seriously. They told me my problems were emotional (hysterical woman). Finally I found a doctor who took me seriously and tested me based on my symptoms. He and 3 other doctors, including a Social Security physician, determined I had very severe physical illness. I got Social Securiy immediately. I struggled to work all that time.when I wasn't taken seriously. Pathetic!

I am so glad you found a doctor who cared enough to follow through. And what happened to you happens all the time. I had an encroached nerve in my neck that was so debilitating I lost the use of my arm and for 5 yrs while half the doctors were misdiagnosing my symptoms, the other half were implying it was all in my head until one doctor finally connected the dots. Some doctors unfortunately are still "practicing" medicine.

@@isabellind1292 I'm glad it worked-out okay for you. It seems like it's not easy to find good doctors. When doctors told me my problem was emotional, I even went to psych doctors who told me my problem wasn't emotional. I don't get it really. Perhaps they're lazy. They probably see women as hysterical.

Yes, I think when a doctor dismisses you and chalks up your physical symptoms as being all in your head just because they can't diagnose what's wrong is essentially not living up the "Hippocratic Oath" they've taken when they became doctors. And frankly, I'd rather have a doctor who cannot properly diagnose my symptoms refer me to another doctor. There's no shame in it and I'd rather have a doctor refer me for a second opinion than send me packing w/nothing but a "It's all psychosomatic...have a nice day"! 🙄🙄 Stay well!😊

I am currently reading the book and I was amazed at how vulnerable Sharon allowed herself to be. She is an amazing woman. I'm so glad that she is in a good place. I think we have to stand up for ourselves with the medical profession. They have told me that my problems weren't as bad as they were and I insisted that there was a problem. It's a shame that women have to go through this but that is the reality.

Wow this is such a nightmare that Sharon had gone through. I had a gallbladder attack at the age of 28 after my daughter was born. I got dismissed at first. What a wonderful interview. I so adore Sharon Stone. I had a subarachnoid Haemorrahage when I was 28 years of age. I too died on the table, had to learn to walk and talk again. I remember the pain. I got lucky, I was found on my floor by a female doctor who took me straight to the hospital. If it was not for her I would be dead today. Sharon, the same thing happened to me at Scripps in La Jolla 19 years ago. They thought I was faking my gall bladder pain because I was too young and fit to be as sick as I was describing.

Thanks Sharon for your honesty! Since your book launch, you have been very busy, great book! I hope you will take time to rest and not get trapped into the business of other people's time schedules, because it could happen again if you don't protect and guard your time to rest. I am saying this because my mother passed away with this disease in the 80s. So I totally sympathise. It was not understood very much during the 80s either...as you said, women's health are being compromised due to the lack of study on this field...thanks again!

I had gallbladder issues with stones when I was 11 years old so it doesn't matter how old you are, you can have problems.

I had gallbladder issues from a young age as well. Doctors refused to even test my gallbladder. When I was 26 a doctor finally did and I had it removed.

It’s hard to believe doctors took so long to accurately diagnose her. I had a ruptured brain aneurysm 3 years ago and even though my symptoms were not as dramatic as hers, my doctors quickly diagnosed my condition and fixed the bleeding aneurysm.
