How to remove a broken dipstick tube/ it didn’t end up working the way I wanted it to but I’ll exp!

So was trying to show you how I’ve made a tool to remove a broken oil dipstick from your automobile it didn’t end up working the way I wanted it to but I did get it out and I thought I did an OK job of describing how I did it in the past. And some of the tricks that I used while removing this one might come in helpful for you remember do not crush the broken off part of the tube because you may have even a harder time getting it out then what I did it and it up taking me about 30 or 45 minutes to get it out but I was patient just like you need to be and eventually I did get it out. I have a 2014 Town & Country and when I was changing the oil filter the rubber gasket was torn in 2 and I can't find part of it and I want to know what will happen if a piece of that rubber gasket made it's way into the engine? Is the engine going to fail?

Watched this last night and successfully removed the broken tube using your extraction method. 1992 ford ranger 2.3l. Used a 3/8 tap. The tip about grease to hold some of the shavings worked great . Now for an oil change and magnetic drain plug. Thanks for making the video.

Good tip just make sure to stick a teloscpopic magnet down there to get as many metal shavings out and do an oil change.

No way I would have gotten mine out without this trick. Took awhile and had to re-thread a few times (S10 4.3 L and portion inside the engine was 4-5") but got it out. I used a long ratcheting wrench - had to put it on before nut, washer, sleeve but made job easier than a stubby wrench.

I used a #6 easy out tool. Worked like a charm. #5 is too small. Insert it, tap lightly to snug it. Turn backwards until it spins. GO slow. Then slowly pull out. Thanks Clay. I tried you methods too. If you reading this, dont freak out and worry. It's an easy fix.

Just did this on a 94' gmc 4.3 , used a 5/16 lag bolt , small wrench , hammer and long chisel. Screw in lag , small wrench under bolt head . Tapunder wrench with hammer and chisel and walla , it slid out. With motor in truck

This a trick my cousin uses, do everything he said to do with the tap just put a lot of bearing grade on your tap and the metal shavings stay in the grease. I use this method when i had to do some heli coil on my 5.4 Triton. Good luck!

Helpful video Clay. I unfortunately have a 93 Firebird LT1 [a friends car], and whoever put the headers on it broke the tube flush with the block/hole. SO the genius grabbed a tube from something laying around, that doesn't fit. it has a flare on the end of where it should fit into hole. I am betting your video will help remove the tube left overs. After I pull the passenger header of course. thanks for posting this video.

Well I know it’s probably in a difficult spot to get to but I haven’t broken off inside the engine block in so long I couldn’t remember but having the engine out made it simpler for me to make the video for folks like you you probably wouldn’t of had as much visibility if I would’ve filmed it while it was inside the automobile and I think that would’ve been less helpful

What do you think about possibly adding a little heat on the block, as you were going for the small piece that was stuck in there mid way through this video? Could that have helped with pulling with the hook tools? Second question is when tapping , you drop metal fillings into the oil. What do you do next?

The metal shavings that you drop down inside the oil pan should be nothing for the oil filter to pick up if you use the tap method put a little bit of grease on it and it should keep the shavings on the tap As far as heating it up, I don’t know that that would hurt at all so you might as well give it a try

When you put the new tube in use some anti seize. Moisture and two different types of metals is a recipe for disaster later on. Thank you for the vid as i have to attack this this week.

I was thinking of this method for my Ford 4.6. It’s in a F150. Thinking also that removing the oil pan might work too. It looks easy enough to lower if I can get to the front 4 bolts blocked by the steering rack.

Yes in that situation taking the pan off is easy , the first time I made a tool to remove a broken one , was on a Ford 4wd the diff was in the way so removing pan was a big problem .

Isn't there more in the oil pan? I have a 5.4 out of the van, pan is off and I see around 2" of the stick. Mine broke on the outside and I am trying to remove it. I was going to tap it upwards from the pan end but after seeing your video, maybe not. Not sure what to do. Thanks for your video.

I TRIED this... No go. Threaded in a lag bolt and used a slide hammer to try to remove the piece... Again, no go. Got mad an drove it into the oil pan...NOW, I have to pull the pan to clean it out. So... Do I pull the motor (half the work is already done) or, pull the transmission to vet the clearance for the pan? Either way, I'm recording this disaster.... 1997 CVPI 4.6

try a vaccum (old kenmore vaccum worked for me). believe it or not, I was able to vaccum mine out. but, I did need to wrap my hand around the oil tube and the vaccum hose as best I could to get good suction. my dipstick was only down about 1/2 inch. if it is down there 2 or 3 inches, I am not sure if it will work.

What about just driving in a lag bolt. The course sharp threads should be able to bite into the metal sleeve without distorting it too much so once it starts to spin you can start yanking it out.

Well the reason that I thought taping it is the best way is because don’t want to push out on it too much because then you will not be able to pull it out of the hole but you should give it a try it may work.

Yes however you have to make sure that the whole is free of debris because sometimes rust builds around it. I use a rubber mallet, but obviously you gotta be a little bit careful not to bend or kink the hose the best thing to do is take a pick and make sure you pull out all of the rust so it will insert properly. It does have a gasket on the bottom of it and it is necessary to make sure that it goes all the way flush

Yo bro my dipstick broke on my 04 Mazda 6 I'm looking for a solution on how to get it out it didn't break at the plastic grab on ring the metal actually broke about an inch down if this doesn't work is there any sort of way I can fix this I do have a rare earth magnet I was thinking about running it down the dipstick tube and hopefully it will grab onto it and pull it up I haven't got around to this but I'm thinking if there's any other quick fixes if you could help me out that be great thanks a lot bro also great video love the vibe that you give off...

I've gotten a 05 3.7l jeep engine broken tube out by threading in a 90s gm body panel bolt, hit it with the heat gun and some pen. Oil. Then put something on the block and start wedging up. Figured I'd throw it out there if anyone has the problem with it, also you can't get the 3.7l dipstick tubes anywhere lol

If you can’t get the dipstick to bolt I recommend first trying to Tap out the hole where the dipstick is then use a bolt to pull it out if that does not work you would have to pull the oil pan but I don’t think on this vehicle that you can pull the oil pan without pulling the motor out I just am not sure because it’s been a couple years since I worked on one. Really sorry Tim wish I could be of some more help

When you tap out the broken Piece still in the block, are you not dropping metal shavings into your oil pan.

OK… take the Engine out take your oil pan off pretty simple. Or you can let the filter do what the filter does. You’re talking about a couple of particles of steel. If you’re not comfortable, do the work properly, remove the oil pan and if necessary remove the engine pretty simple.

Well of course it’s a possibility. And is almost certainly a probability. But it would be extremely hard to hurt something. Because of the crank shield and oil filter. unless you just pushed the tip of it down inside the oil pan for it to really damage anything. But who knows I’m not going to be liable for you dropping stuff down inside there and then destroying your engine. This is just the way I do it. all I can say is I’ve done this procedure about 20 or 30 times and I’ve never had an issue after the fact. Even when I tap them out you’re talking about teeny tiny metal shavings.

The shavings are a softer metal than pretty much anything they'll come in contact with in the engine. BUT, if you're like me and super OCD about your car work, you can use a glob of grease in the shaft before you start screwing anything into it, it'll catch any shavings, but try not to let too much grease get down in there either. Catch 22, but I'd rather have grease than metal shavings in my engine.

If you go through all the work to pull the engine out of the car would it not just make more sense to take the oil pan off and undo the little set screw that holds the dipstick tube in place? Why Chevrolet would design the oil pan with the set screw on the inside of the oil pan is beyond me... but thats where its located.

is that a PT Cruiser motor by chance . i broke off the dip stick handle, and i tryed to drill the plastic in order to get a screw in it, and as i was doing the stick kept sliding down further in to the tube. I tryed to pull on the tube, and the damn thing is stuck, so now i have to remove the tube . and having a bitch of a time doing it, it wont pull out, I dont think theres a bolt holding the tube in place like some motors.
