Loved the Redemption of poor Kelly. He hated that he was flogged so ran away but he wasn't a monster like the rest of them and wasn't comfortable with what was going on. When Sharpe forgives him at the end by making him a chosen man 😢

He didn't desert from the King, he ran away from the lash. He didn't like being treated like a common criminal when like Sharpe, he was a war hero.

Most deserters were neither cowards nor monsters. Flogging, poor pay (often late), lack of food, and other deplorable conditions often made deserving seen a good choice.
@poil83512 ай бұрын
well there many reasons for desertion. some deserted to go home if they lived in the region to attend crops or their family. some deserted due to late pay. some deserted because of bad officers and nco's excessive discipline. some deserted to escape the battlefield becusse they didn't want to fight anymore and no longer wanted to suffer. the worst deserters were the ones who especially in this era deserted because they had been prevented from looting and pillaging.

I honestly think Sharpe wouldn't have been half the success it was if it wasn't for Pete Postlethwaite's performance as Hakeswell. One of The all time *best* TV villains, and a level the show never managed to top afterwards.

Youre on the money. I saw my first episode of Sharpe this xmas, the one before this in which Hakeswell was introduced. He is absurdly well acted and written in that episode, but the other episodes havent grabbed me so. I think they should've kept him around as an about camp menace.

Pete Postlethwaite is great. Not bad as Hakeswill. I wish they would have written him more like the books though. One of the guys who does the voice acting for the audiobooks(there are two versions of the audiobooks, one reader is much better than the other but atm I can't remember the names)and he does Hakeswill so amazingly well. It's amazing. I love this series but it's prob closer to the least favorite of Cornwell's books(I've read almost every one of his books fiction or non fiction)but I still give it a 8.8/10 as a series. His others are just so top tier amazing they make this normal amazing series seem less than they are when comparing. Though it's not my least favorite though. The Rebel series is prob my least. And that's great, don't get me wrong, I'd say it's a 8/10 as a whole but the US civil war out of all wars doesn't really interest me all that much. I think it's the style of battle. Or that I grew up in the US and heard about it my whole life. IDK.

Well… they used the expression “firing blanks” - was that used prior to the development of cartridge rounds?
@Krushtykon2 ай бұрын
Oh yeah lol, though it makes sense that they'd exist for training just a cartridge without the ball, not sure if the term blank was around though, they had rockets after all.@@FastEddy1959
